when the civil war breaks out, I hope you are able to make it over here to USW (United States of the West).  I think you'll be covered under the USNE, alliance agreement, but I worry about their ability to hold on to anything beyond Manhattan Island.

Please keep a couple of slots open for the (non-native) Texas contingency.  Not all here (even some of the locals) are out of their bloody minds.

That is an issue in our industry. I think its a left brain, right brain thing. I always stress to the people that I train that if the general public had the tech knowledge they would not be calling us for assistance. I have worked with some really brilliant technicians over the years who should not be allowed to interact with the public because they are wholly unable and completely lacking in the most basic of social skills! The goal is to fix the issue as simply and efficiently as possible and social skills are just as if not more important than technical knowledge in achieving this goal in the real world.

i came to work the other day to an email from one of my 3 bosses (she doesn't show up until after lunch and barely gets started by the time i leave for the day, so that's how she communicates) telling me down to the finest detail how to do one aspect of my job (that isn't rocket science anyway) that i've been doing since i started in 2011. as if i am a 6 year old. i can't tell you how that pushed my buttons...
if i said what this specific task was, and how it didn't warrant 4 paragraphs of email instructions, you'd laugh your arse off, too.

Welcome to Oz. The internet sucks.

The previous government announced a National Broadband Network roll-out as a classic Australian 'public-private partnership'. In this case that basically means giving companies money so they don't have to raise their own capital. The idea was to deploy fiber to the premises but the next government decided that was too expensive and would be too slow to implement so they went with fiber to the node and use the existing copper phone lines to your house. This apparently is also slow to implement and expensive.

It doesn't help that I live on the wrong side of the tracks but so far the net result for me is that no company is going to invest in upgrading their DSL because its days are numbered. Last year they ran fiber down my street so I would be one of the lucky ones who will only have a short run of copper across the street to my house that apparently won't be shared with anyone, not that I really know how these things work. They then delayed my roll out for a year.

Apparently people who have the NBN only get a small fraction of the speed they pay for. Thanks, Netflix.

Ouch. I switched from DSL to cable internet about 10 years ago. DSL was ok, but cable was faster and local instead of big Corp.
