I always coached my crew on what questions were both legal and appropriate for interviews. When we did group or panel interviews I occasionally threw a flag when something was asked and told the interviewee that they shouldn't answer, and there was no penalty for a non-response. In our case it was usually around availability because we were a 24x7 shop with occasional crisis hours, but there were a few on nationality, and one on gender that was tricky.

In a tech job group on Facebook, someone inquired about being asked inappropriate questions during an interview, such as "Do you have children?"  I replied, "I usually tell them, 'None that I know of...,'" with the little winky smiley in my comment.  Most people acknowledged the joke with a "like" or a "laugh" - but one guy says "I don't see how a woman wouldn't know if she'd had children or not."  JFC.  That's why it's a joke.
