Well it's up there, that's a start. I should have paid more attention in computer class.

Anyway as for the theme. I've always had a soft spot for female vocalists. Whether it's a soft ballad or a hard charging blues tune, the fairer sex always got my attention. I count artists like Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones and Jill Sobule* among my all time favorites. I really didn't want to mix up too much in terms of style when I got the idea, so I decided to stick more with rocking tunes, Hence the "Licks" title. As always I try to filter in stuff you are familiar with, some you may not have heard in awhile and hopefully some that reached your ears for the first time. I had fun putting it together, could have gone with a double CD but edited it down to single. Hope you all enjoyed the lovely ladies!

*Jill Sobule - Yes I realize she makes it into my mixes frequently. She is such a great song writer and her material "works" with a lot of the ideas I've come up with. Plus I know she isn't main stream so more often than not the selection would be new to you guys. And if I turn anyone on to her music, well that's not a bad thing!

Highlights:

Love all Bonnie Raitt, this one was really old school soulful rb sounding with the keyboards and big horns. Kinda reminded me of the Muscle Shoals sound.  Works well for her, but then again what doesn't? lol

Lucinda is a national treasure, great song

Luvs me some Ditty Bops, cool tune

Never heard that Aimee Mann song before, liked it.

When My Ship Comes In was a really poppin tune!

Raised on Robbery - I ain't even gonna front, I really don't like Joni Mitchell, but you know what? I liked this song, maybe she's not so bad after all. lol

I don't know what Amy Correia looks like, but I would totally do her voice!

Whether you like Rikki Lee Jones or not her song structure is completely unique, you never know where she gonna go. lol

Bad Self Portraits -  ok I am writing this as I listen so I can tell you this is my favorite song on the mix so far, this chick can saang

Usually try to sprinkle my Sallie Ford in little bits, too much of a good thing or something, she reallly gets into it and their songs have a great sense of humour. College radio loves them, I hope they don't get famous, I hope no one gets famous anymore...imagine. They're Limeys, aren't they?

Oh wow, gotta ask.  Where did you hear the Danielle Howle? After all these years, is she finally breaking commercial?  Local girl, been playing the Columbia SC and southeast for the past I know at least 20 years now.  I actually have trouble listening to her music anymore and it has nothing to do with her music. Ok, I am usually a really nice guy, but my friends and I (at least 10 of us) were celebrating my birthday in Columbia right before I moved to Georgia back in 2010 and we decided to meet at the White Mule downtown Columbia to see Danielle, I have loved her for years (and she is like totally my type too, little waif, very hot but I digress) because she is a very talented and unique singer/songwriter, but we had gotten wasted before she went on and I was on a roll, everyone was boisterous, I had been watching The Office, she mentioned something on stage that was a total lob for "that's what she said" amongst other things; people got pissed, we got tossed, feel really bad about it to this day, I apologized to her on Facebook, but she probably hates me.  I didn't listen, I have heard that song before, it is good.  Aw gee wiz Danielle, I'm sorry.{#Cry}

Precious - Been forever since I heard this one....shit kickin'!!{#Dancingbanana_2}
Hey you know what?  My favorite mix from you so far! Bravisimo!{#Bananajam}

Thanks for the review. I got back from vacation last week and ended up swamped at work and home. Plus I'm still struggling with the tech side of getting my Word Doc somewhere to bring into RP via URL. Thought my girl had it figured last time but came in as a thumb nail. I'm gonna work on getting the list up next week.

My sister turned me on to Danielle, not sure where she picked it up from. I think an old work colleague. Other than that I haven't heard her anywhere. I thought a track of hers would work well on the mix, she rocks.

Listened last night. Delightful mix, heard some unfamiliar voices (always appreciated!) and some fine ass-kicking music. Going to have to go thru it again and track down some of these artists.

This mix was alarmingly conventional for me. The theme came to me on a walk on (surprise!) a windy day. I thought of a couple off the top of my head and did a quick search thru my server. Then a couple more. Then I had two and a half times the songs I needed, and set about making a playlist.

covers

backs

The playlist:

1. Le Vent Nous Portera - Noir Désir

2. Dreadful Wind And Rain - Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

3. The West Wind - Ryley Walker

4. Hard Wind - Story Hill

5. Suite For Windy Spring - Propinquity

6. Wind in the Hills - KGB

7. Weary O’ The Darning - Gordon Bok

8. Fragile Wind - Nitin Sawhney & Tina Grace

9. Desert Wind - Kate Wolf

10. Dying On A Windy Day - Manbird Experiment

11. Oldest Living Son - John Stewart

12. Wind and the Mountain - Liz Phair

13. Whispering Wind - Moby

14. Listening Wind - Talking Heads

15. Windy and Warm - Doc Watson

16. The Winds Of Heaven - Hariprasad Chaurasia

17. Spring Wind - Greg Brown

This list is a good bit mellower than I intended but that's the way it came out. Sometimes the project takes its own direction—in this case more conventional than my usual. I still like it but it follows a straighter path than I usually travel. I promise something twistier next time.

My albeit brief review: I always know that when Lazy8 is on deck, I will hear tunes to which I simply cannot sit still, as well as some gorgeous world music which transports me to another country - and Windy Day is no exception!  Thanks for the tunes and, especially, thanks for the invitation back into the fold!

My overdue review. One of the things that stood out for me, aside from the wind, was the great guitar work found in this mix. From the good old strumming of Jerry, the great picking heard on the Ryley Walker & Story Hill tracks to the Kanoodeling of Adrian Belew on Listening Wind. All good stuff. I found I put the Liz track on repeat each time I heard it, so I guess it turned out to be my favorite. And to offset that I hit fast forward on the Chaurasia one which seemed to go on forever LOL. I agree with SirD, the Oldest Living Son sounded straight out of the Northern realm of Lightfoot.

All in all a very good pinch hitting performance. You can hold your head high! {#Cheers}

Le Vent Nous Portera - Love this song, this is one of those mystery songs in my library that found me. I honestly have no idea how or when I got it! lol

I heard it on RP, tracked down the disc. One of many I owe Bill a thank-you for.
Dreadful Wind & Rain - Love it when Garcia gets back to his bluegrass/folk roots. Seems I have heard other versions of this song, no?

Had a moment of panic wondering if I had used this very version on a previous disc, but no—it was a candidate but I went with another artist for that one. Which is a long-winded way of saying yes.
Dying on a Wind Day - That was actually pretty cool, but what is this Man - Bird Experiment? ;-)

This music takes some space and patience, but it's well worth it.
Oldest Living Son - man do I hear Gordon Lightfoot which is never a bad thing btw

I had to go look, and not only were they contemporaries but the Kingston Trio covered Lightfoot during Stewart's tenure with them. Both prolific songwriters and similar gifts for storytelling. Thanks, I never thought to compare them.

And I've been listening to this since it came out 47 years ago and it still crushes me like a bug.
Wind and the Mountain - just now realized how much Liz Phair sounds like Sheryl Crow or is the other way around, Liz came first, right? Anyway, good song

Other way around—Crow got her start as a backup and session singer about 5 years before Phair, but Phair got a solo album out about 3 years earlier so sort of. And I think Crow is technically a better singer but I have a lot of respect for both as songwriters.
The Winds of Heaven - big water drum fan and as you well know luvs me some furriner music! I would say this is my favorite song in the mix.

I had another from the same album I liked even better but it was even longer (14 minutes!) and I'd have had to push something else aside to fit it. It was tough to cut this one down to fit, could have easily done 2 discs.

As soon as I saw the theme, I immediately thought of all the songs in my own library about wind, wind is a popular inspiration! Per usual terrific art work and packaging. You are right about the mood, I will be bringing this one out late in the evening as the night simmers down and you retire to the back porch to enjoy the company of the ones you love:

Le Vent Nous Portera - Love this song, this is one of those mystery songs in my library that found me. I honestly have no idea how or when I got it! lol

Dreadful Wind & Rain - Love it when Garcia gets back to his bluegrass/folk roots. Seems I have heard other versions of this song, no?

The West Wind - Started kinda like background music, but they really jammed out the last 2 minutes and got my attention!

Hard Wind - love me a fast strummin' accoustic guitar!

Desert Wind - good stuff pretty fancy fiddlin!

Dying on a Wind Day - That was actually pretty cool, but what is this Man - Bird Experiment? ;-)

Oldest Living Son - man do I hear Gordon Lightfoot which is never a bad thing btw

Wind and the Mountain - just now realized how much Liz Phair sounds like Sheryl Crow or is the other way around, Liz came first, right? Anyway, good song

Whispering Wind - Not really a Moby kinda guy, but this was pretty chillax

Windy & Warm - Doc Watson, the man, the myth, the legend! Used to play one of my best friends venues every year, great guy too.

The Winds of Heaven - big water drum fan and as you well know luvs me some furriner music! I would say this is my favorite song in the mix.

Spring Wind - what a well written song, Greg Brown is a fine song writer.

This mix was alarmingly conventional for me. The theme came to me on a walk on (surprise!) a windy day. I thought of a couple off the top of my head and did a quick search thru my server. Then a couple more. Then I had two and a half times the songs I needed, and set about making a playlist.

covers

backs

The playlist:

1. Le Vent Nous Portera - Noir Désir

2. Dreadful Wind And Rain - Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

3. The West Wind - Ryley Walker

4. Hard Wind - Story Hill

5. Suite For Windy Spring - Propinquity

6. Wind in the Hills - KGB

7. Weary O’ The Darning - Gordon Bok

8. Fragile Wind - Nitin Sawhney & Tina Grace

9. Desert Wind - Kate Wolf

10. Dying On A Windy Day - Manbird Experiment

11. Oldest Living Son - John Stewart

12. Wind and the Mountain - Liz Phair

13. Whispering Wind - Moby

14. Listening Wind - Talking Heads

15. Windy and Warm - Doc Watson

16. The Winds Of Heaven - Hariprasad Chaurasia

17. Spring Wind - Greg Brown

This list is a good bit mellower than I intended but that's the way it came out. Sometimes the project takes its own direction—in this case more conventional than my usual. I still like it but it follows a straighter path than I usually travel. I promise something twistier next time.
