That's why Egypt has been shutting down the internet there over the past 24 hours or so. However, despite blocking their citizens from connecting via the internet and social networks, "the Revolution will not be televised." It will go on regardless at this point.

Good point. I like to imagine many people used to think they were the only ones against such regimes, and social media has allowed them to connect and discover 'hey, it's not just me, it's not just hundreds, but THOUSANDS of people feel this way. There are enough of us we could actually DO something.'

Imagine all the people cowering in their homes, afraid to speak out lest they be the only ones. Social media can give folks the opportunity to find strength in numbers. Of course that sword is gonna cut both ways, so YMMV.

Ayup.  I sincerely hope The West will - if for no other reason than they're already overextended - stay the f*ck out of this.

There is a lot of poverty in Jordan. I was there last week and saw a lot of despair. That and a lot of paranoid security. We had to go through three security checkpoints in order to drive up to our hotel, and then went through a metal detector in the lobby. Serious business.
