Incredible. Thanks so much Proclivities. That, folks, is why Wikipedia searches should be backed up with further exploration. I agree that it is crows or ravens. I guess I actually used the notion of vultures to suggest other tensions.

They referenced input by a guy in Gary, N.C. I guess they could have meant Cary...

The more I look at it the more it seems a rather fantastic picture. Never thought of Vultures as cold weather birds. The different birds don't look alike, either. One looks like waterfowl (duck or goose), but the one with wings spread doesn't look water fowl-ish with it's seemingly pointed beak.

There's some curious history about that painting and another one which resembles it - probably more than anyone here needs to know.  It does appear to be either crows or ravens in both pictures.

We get turkey vultures on their migration... it's fairly rare to see them. But on Friday I saw a dozen that had been grounded by cold weather. They are really reluctant to flap their wings, so if a cold gray day happens, they just wait it out. The sun did come out over the weekend so I expect they were able to move on.

I think it is a murder of crows.

I get that. There is something barren about the image. It is evocative and it seems unresolved as if the question is 'what next'? I can't tell if those are ominous crows or opportunistic vultures but they appear to be thwarted either way. The dog is a shepherd and the lamb is found. It has significant meaning for me out here on the fringes of projection.

The painting is entitled "The Rescue Of A Lost Friend." Hopefully that makes you feel at least a little better about it.   {#Good-vibes}
