For all practical purposes, no, we don't.

The State Department issued 65,621 visas to Mexican citizens last year, mostly to families of US citizens. That's out of a backlog of 1.4 million. The waiting list for family reunification visas is about 20 years.

Thanks.

You're welcome.

Actually it was an illustration of a preventable accident.  Had the trailer had horses in it this accident most likely would not have happened.

Because horses can be legally imported? Or is this supposed to be funny somehow?

Seems like opening up a legal pathway to immigration would save a lot of lives. I mean, that's what you're worried about here, right?

When Soldiers Patrol the Border, Civilians Get Killed
The timeline of events was perfectly Trumpian. Last weekend, Easter weekend, the president of the United States was at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, hanging out with his right-wing friends, watching cable news and getting mad about immigrants. Multiple Fox News hosts and Stephen Miller, the White House adviser behind many of the administration’s aggressive efforts to deplete the nation’s immigrant population, were in attendance. The crew had at least two pieces of bad news for the president: One, Ann Coulter was calling him out for not being tough enough on immigrants; and two, a caravan of said immigrants were marching north toward the border.

In a move that any sentient observer of the administration would expect, the commander in chief responded to the news by tweeting a series of deeply misleading statements to his 45 million followers and the rest of the world over multiple days. Along the way, he made a series of eye-opening vows. By the time the dust settled three days later, President Donald Trump and the departments of Justice and Homeland Security had all put out statements telling the country that the National Guard was being deployed to secure the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

On Wednesday afternoon, while news of the purported deployment was still developing, I was on the phone with a retired border lawman, chatting about another story. Before we hung up, I asked him what he thought of the president’s comments. He told me about a case from years back, in which the National Guard shot and killed an American teen — a high school student, in fact — while he was out hunting. The details were fuzzy, but clearly the case had stuck with him; it was an example, he said, of what, predictably, happens when the military is sent to do the work of law enforcement. “That was the first thing I thought of,” he told me.

As soon as we got off the phone, I started googling the facts he had described. He had gotten some of the details wrong. The shooter in the case was actually a U.S. Marine, not a member of the National Guard. And the boy who died was not hunting, he was walking his family’s goats. But the broad strokes of the case were right. The boy had just turned 18, but he was still in high school, and he was killed during one of the country’s traditional bouts of demands to bring the border under control by military means. His name was Esequiel Hernández, and, as Trump pushes for another round of border militarization, the story of his tragic killing, and the politics that led to it, are worth revisiting. (...)

BTW, I saw the people themselves being interviewed on Link TV and they looked pretty angry to me. Unless they were lying or something. Spain should take em all cause they fvcked everyone up in Central and South America before us just to be fair ain't it? And you should also shoulder some blame for your countries treatment of the indigenous people, I mean you personally cause that's how it works, right?

The root causes of the misery rarely feature in these discussions.

These countries became independent (from their colonial masters) a long time ago. But it didn't stop there, now did it? So to point back further in time, is avoiding responsibility for more recent meddling. I don't see these people taking a boat trying to reach Spain. Most of them appear to be happy enough to reach Mexico, some want to go further up North. And yes, they end up here on the border here, in increasing numbers. If you have a link for the Link TV segment, share it.

As far as Europe is concerned, they got to deal with similar blowback, except it came from Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. And we've seen the same hysterics play out there (and here in the forum). Rapists, terrorists, freeloaders!

You know what, I ain't even gonna front. I will take South and Central America any day. Thanks for reminding me how much better we have it than the EU. Glass is most definitely half full.

Oh, yes, your sovereignty. A Kurtster favourite as well. How about the sovereignty of the places (among many others) where some of these people come from. You may not personally agree, of course, but it's your gov that has interfered in their elections, installing right-wing puppets, or worse supporting their death squads. So it's also blowback. Immigration has never been an issue I have been concerned with partially because I happen to really like Latino culture and that is the demographic that we are really discussing here.  What has been happening recently regarding the Central American caravan movement is a bit baffling to me though.  The idea that all of these people are angry because the government is trying to prevent them from coming in is just odd to me.  Somehow we are the bad guys because we don't just let everyone in and move on nothing to see here.  Seems kinda disrespectful to our sovereignty and not how immigration policy works in most countries.    Another interesting take and an angle you may not have thought of on this is my wife's point of view.  She is in full support of a wall and securing a border, but not for the reasons that most of those who support it are.  She actually has experience in the hidden world of the illegal immigrant migrant worker working with Catholic priest who have exclusive access to the illegal workers, she has sat down many times with the workers and had bone soup or whatever they could scrounge together out of politeness and respect so she has walked the walk and knows whats up which many do not because these camps are well hidden from the public eye and the authorities who know but have arrangements shall we say with the land owners to look the other way.  Anyway, the conditions horrified her and she has been intensely interested in complete reform since so these people would not have their illegal status used against them forcing them into what amounts to slavery.  Reform cannot be properly instituted without securing the borders, that's all.

I mostly agree with you here. I think we have a lopsided immigration policy/argument in this country due to proximity and a bit of latent racism - not a lot of focus on people from europe overstaying visas and such, but overall you are correct about recognizing the supply/demand part of the problem and our part in feeding the demand for immigrant labor.

The thing is our border is reasonably secure now. We spend a lot of resource on it. And I'm not convinced that spending a lot more is going to do much more meaningful to the problem. And building a 25 billion dollar wall is just going to line the pockets of well connected contractors willing to give kickbacks.  We will never secure the border 100%. As long as we allow people to transit the imaginary line we have drawn, there will be people who abuse the privilege. If we rationalize our policies, allow people to come in and work in an economically viable way, and spend as much on policing those on our side who violate the policy for their own gain as we do on holding the border we would be in a much better position. There will always be rule breakers on both sides. The goal is to minimize it by aligning the incentives so that 90+% of the people behave within the system. Then your enforcement agencies aren't overwhelmed with the problem.
