Kavanaugh and the Federalist Society

“The fact that if Kavanaugh gets through, the entire Supreme Court will have gone to Harvard or Yale is terrible for the country. And I say that as having graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law.

“Trump acknowledged Edwin Meese last night, which is fitting because in addition to being Ronald Reagan’s Attorney General, he was a leading founder of the Federalist Society. The Independent Counsel in the Iran-Contra Scandal Judge Lawrence Walsh found that Meese was the architect of its cover-up by the Reagan administration.

“Almost all of the Bush administration lawyers responsible for its war and torture memos are members of the Federalist Society. Many members of the Federalist Society say that Brown v. Board of Education (which struck down ‘separate but equal’) was decided wrongly and practice to overturn it at the United States Supreme Court.”

The Secretive Puppetmaster Behind Trump’s Supreme Court Pick

When President Donald Trump nominates a justice to the Supreme Court on Monday night, he will be carrying out the agenda of a small, secretive network of extremely conservative Catholic activists already responsible for placing three justices (Alito, Roberts, and Gorsuch) on the high court.

 ...

Now, of the 25 people on Trump’s Supreme Court list, all but one are Federalist Society members or affiliates. Justice Gorsuch was the speaker at the 2017 Federalist Society gala. And when Gorsuch was asked how he had come to Trump’s attention, he told Congress, “On about December 2, 2016, I was contacted by Leonard Leo”
 ...

And of the 18 people Trump has nominated to federal appeals courts, 17 are Federalist Society members or affiliates.

These include appellate court Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a leading Supreme Court contender and member of a far-right Catholic sect called the People of Praise that makes use of actual “handmaids” (now called “women leaders”)

Oh, right, DS failed. Trump won — twice — the elections rigged against him.

By the way, I favor Justices with impeccable legal credentials who would be considered closer to the middle of the spectrum rather than to the far left or right. Merrick Garland would have fit that bill.

Merrick Garland would have been the best possible choice. It would have left the ideological balance of the court slightly right. It would have corrected the gigantic fuck up that mitch foisted on us all. There would be no legitimate way for the Dems to be against him and it thus it would have been a giant win for Trump. And it would have shown some nod to conciliation and an opportunity for some healing in the damaged political times we live in.  Alas, no way it would have happened.

This is why we can't have nice things.

When good people don't want to bother with the ugliness of the process, it ensures that we will only have demagogues and sycophants.

I don't see it that way, I see it as a smart strategic move to just further insure that the Republicans keep shooting themselves in the head. If they were smart and they are not, they would nominate this guy as quickly as possible, lick their wounds and be grateful the party still exists for now.  Call it a nudge to hit the epicenter of the temple, one they probably did not even need seeing how they are basically a bunch of Homer Simpsons at this point.  Doh!  Obama really is the one eyed king in the valley of the blind.
