Koko, the gorilla who knew sign language, dies at 46
1996: Dr. Francine Patterson plays with Koko and her kitty-cat pal. Koko knows 2,000 words in sign language. (File photo)

Koko the gorilla, whose remarkable sign-language ability and motherly attachment to pet cats helped change the world's views about the intelligence of animals and their capacity for empathy, has died at 46.

Koko was taught sign language from an early age as a scientific test subject and eventually learned more than 1,000 words, a vocabulary similar to that of a human toddler.

She became a celebrity who played with the likes of William Shatner, Sting, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robin Williams and Mr. Rogers. At her home preserve, where she was treated like a queen, she ran around with Williams' eyeglasses and unzipped Rogers' famous cardigan sweater.

In so doing, Koko showed the American public that a giant ape didn't have to be scary but wanted to be tickled and hugged. (...)

Do not weep for Bernard Lewis, high priest of war in the Middle East
For decades, Bernard Lewis, who has just died, provided the intellectual and moral justification for bigotry and war in the Middle East

Pahrump-based radio host Art Bell dies at 72 on Friday the 13th, 2018

A big sad.  Listened to him from the mid 90's until his retirement.  I know that he is held in low regard by most here, but a noteworthy passing to some.

An interview by Larry King, another one of my favorite overnight radio talk show hosts, who I listened to for the entire stint of his syndicated run from when there were only 28 stations carrying his show until his retirement from radio.

I do wish there was a way to embed this, but the track's just not available anywhere else. Click here, and select the song titled Zero G (Flash is required). It's a fun tribute, good tune, and specTACular fretwork.
