If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you
If I knew the way I would take you home

La da da da La da da da da
La da da La da La da da da
La da da da La da da da da
La da da da La da da da da

I also like the GD although I'm not (or wasn't) a Dead Head....oh I wish I could have toured with the band back in the day....totally different life, eh?

As far as telling folks to "open up (their) small minds" well....that might not be the most persuasive argument style.  And really, with an average rating of just under 8 with 2,000 ratings....this might be the highest rated GD tune.  Besides, other than explaining why something is "10-Godlike vs 01-Sucko-Barfo" and maybe pointing out a few things about how the track was made, etc., I really don't think any of us can influence someone's taste/rating much more than a point.

This one's a 9-Outstanding to me.  LONG LIVE RP and PEACE OUT

Can never get enough dead ..... come on, open up your small minds people!

Breath deep long enough and they do.
Was never a Deadhead.  Didn't dislike them.  Liked Uncle John's Farm and a few others, but just did not get the fascination at all  Then I heard this song used in the last episode of Freaks and Geeks of all places, and I was intrigued.  Bought American Beauty.  Wow!  Bought the album before and after it, heard a few concerts people had recorded.  Kind of get it now.

What a nasty person you are. Explains the state of the world.
The whole of this album is just the best summer chillin music

ah yes, it is that back to school time of year
Hell, on a sunny afternoon, after a few beers, this is just such an awesome song. Best way to enjoy it! Pour yourself one, sit in the sun and just unwind. It's the best therapy in the universe.
American Schlager, some might say.

Nice sensations. Nice memories. Nice mix-up with nice short-time fizzlers. Crappy juice; like Mike's Lemonade.

I am not a Dead Head either. Their music just kind of annoys me. Don't want them dead but their music could just kind of go away.

PDS to the rescue.

and here is my out of time comment: the end of Freaks and Geeks with this song is really cool...

It's just not right listening to this song and then not hearing Brokedown Palace next.

Hey RP, I no longer have this album on CD, tape, or vinyl.

Can ya just play one side of it?

You can stream it in its entirety on YouTube.
Thank you from Jerry! And the dead. It made my night wonderful.

such a beautiful, trippy, cryptic, and hooky song that you can sing as well as drive and dance to.

Yeah baby.
Good set today, I guess work can wait until the coffee is drunk, and the soul satiated
Godlike.... and then some!

The Dead got there name because they were grateful that their fans had ears that were dead.

Wow. This song is perfection. Gives me chills every time. You know when the stars are aligned, and the music and lyrics come together beyond gracefully... that's bliss.

Every time I hear this, I think of two dear friends who have left this earth. Rest in peace, John "Ernie" Beer and Earl "Willy" Doyle - you are both deeply missed.

^ Wow... I knew I had commented on this song at some point in the past, but didn't realize it was nearly TEN years ago. I still feel the same about it, and I still think of these friends every time I hear it.

RP has been a part of my life since 2002. FOURTEEN years. Thank you, Bill & Rebecca!

Closing song of the Dear Jerry Tribute Concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion this past June.  They made it a huge sing-a-long and 25000 people were in tune, emotionally and (somewhat) musically.

So great.

You had to be there. One of the great songs of that time period.

Yes, and yes it does.  This song just always seems to be right on when ever its played.

8 to 9
Just a beautiful, trippy, well-played, well-sung song.

Most bands today just scratch their heads in wonderment and just don't get it.

Ibid. I had to PSD it once it came on, as I could already sense the sing-along bit looming at the end.
