Life's the same, I'm moving in stereo
Life's the same except for my shoes
Life's the same, you're shakin' like tremolo
Life's the same, it's all inside you

It's so easy to blow up your problems
It's so easy to play up your breakdown
It's so easy to fly through a window
It's so easy to fool with the sound

It's so tough to get up
It's so tough
It's so tough to live up
It's so tough on you

I remember seeing these guys in a tiny little speakeasy in East Cambridge (Ma.) when they first got started in 1976. They still sound great. Thanks RP!
I remember having this album around the house as a kid and LOVING it.  Hadn't heard anything like The Cars at the time - I'd play it when no one was home.
Still among my favourite bands!
Elliot Easton, such a good guitarist!

Bill, you HAVE TO go back to playing All Mixed Right Up immediately after Moving In Stereo! It's such a great couplet.

I concur.

The Cars are my favorite band. 'All Mixed Up' is as good as any song on their self titled debut album. The climax that builds up and is then released at the end of the song is glorious, and it is the perfect ending to a near perfect album.
there's a clarion call, to them keyboards
Great song and album. RIP Ben & Ric
Pure genius songwriting and execution. The Cars first album is an amazing piece of work.

What a densely explosive period for music.

The Cars, The Pretenders, The Clash, Dire Straits, Elvis Costello, Springsteen, Blondie (who else ya got?).

And this awkward stoner boy HS senior in Massachusetts had WBCN playing ALL OF IT!!!

Totally with you except for the pot. Didn't smoke much back then (or ever) but yeah it was a pretty cool time for music and movies.

RIP BCN The Rock of Boston...
I keep trying to bump up my rating, every time. Still doesn't go past 10. Maybe an 11 should be added. This one goes to 11.
Great album.

I hear ya.  Bill's a hardass these days...
I say it every time I hear this song...It's All Mixed Up is part of the song in my opinion and I am always disappointed when it doesn't come after it.  I love the song but it always make it incomplete.  RP does it with Pink Floyd all the time but not this one.  Not complaining, just saying.  Peace.
Never saw the film(s) attached to this song or the actor mentioned here.
Hmmm...

The Cars, what a great band, especially before their popular music breakout in 1984 (Heartbreak City).  We need to hear more of them.

Me too!  We probably saw the Cars in concert a dozen times that year!  Along with our other Boston locals, Aerosmith and J. Geils.
I was working at Pewter Pot when this came out.  The manager give me money to run down the Strawberries to buy this for her.  This was at the Walpole Mall in Walpole, Massachusetts.

I remember when this sounded somewhat edgy. Damn I'm old.
THANK YOU for seguing Moving In Stereo  and All Mixed Up - they fit so well and are meant to be heard that way on the album.

Dare I say one of the finest debut albums of all time?  Saw them in SF shortly after this came out and may I say it changed nearly everything.....drugs helped, but what a tight band.......mind blowing.
My favorite Cars song, but If you play this again without All Mixed Up, I might have to cancel my membership!
Stunningly good debut album. A game changer.

The New Cars led by Todd Rundgren with original lead guitarist Elliot Easton are really good.

I love Elliot's guitar sound in the intro (and through the whole tune). So much crunch but not that much distortion. I want that sound.
Phoebeeee!!!

upgrade to an 8
A great album, all the way around. A favorite. Saw them 4 times in concert. Always a deadpan concert from a showmanship perspective, but great music nonetheless. Love the Cars. RIP Ben and Ric.
YOU ROCK IT BECAUSE YOU PLAY THEM BOTH TOGETHER....THE WAY THEY WERE MEANT TO BE PLAYED...and cheers to my dear old Pop who introduced me to this and...the correct way to play it!!!!!!   Love ya dear old Dad...
one of the best songs ever, from one of the best bands ever...
RP always plays obscure but best songs from a album, not just the hits
You know, it's illegal in some places not to play the other half of this song, All Mixed Up. Just sayin, Bill.

This came on and - as it always does - I was immediately in the summer between high school and college. A very short, intensely weird window in my life, but not without it's high points. This album was in constant rotation everywhere and their particular flavour of tasty synthpop ushered in what would become New Wave in our circles. Stirs up many twisted but fun memories.

This was the only 8track that would play on the bus I rode to middle school and high school, (but I rode a bicycle mostly by then except for a month after breaking my leg)
We were about to pick up my crush when this came on. Pretty blonde.

A spectacularly "stereophonic" sounding segue from Hooverphonic's 'Inhaler'!

Always love a good thematically relevant transition

I remember Poplar Creek. Saw Sting there and a few other bands I can't remember. Cool place...too bad it's gone. It was a pretty decent venue to see a band.
Bill, you HAVE TO go back to playing All Mixed Right Up immediately after Moving In Stereo! It's such a great couplet.

These guys just blew the doors off of everything else at the time... I saw an interview a few years ago where Rick was saying that he and Ben had actually spent years nearly perfecting most of the songs that became this debut record while still in Ohio; after they'd moved to Boston and met up with the other members who were accomplished music school guys ready to go, they sure took off!
Yaz vs. Soft Cell...WHO 'YA GOT?

When I was a freshman in college one of my older buddies dropped out and went to work just about the time this came out.  He was living with mom and dad and the first paycheck he decked out this POS Monza with a really killer car stereo system.  We would drive out on country roads in back woods Appalachia, sip''n cheap beer,  burn big old bones and crank this tune.

Alas, maybe your pleas are being properly disregarded with no other rationale than, "because they should be".
This song was WAY ahead of its time...still sounds great, and fresh, today.

They had a great run. I feel like they pushed the radio rock genre to its absolute limit at a time rock and roll had lost its way. Every band since has basically been trying to reinvent or rediscover older forms. The Cars by contrast were the last classic rock band to be original - if that males any sense.
I always picture that scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High whenever I hear this song!
