This is unrelated to the iPhone app but just out of curiosity, do you think 128 AAC is equal to >> less than >> OR  superior to 192 kbp MP3?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, it's been a couple years since I've been plugged into streaming audiophile performance.

Hmmm...  just had a thought. If you're using an older version of the app (like from more than 3 months ago) you may indeed get substandard sound at 64k.  The last 2 versions of the app fixed that problems.

The 64k stream used in the app is 64k AAC+, which is very similar in sound quality to our 128k MP3 stream. The 128k stream used in the app is 128k AAC. I agree that it's superior to 64k (as well as superior to 128k MP3) but the difference is relatively subtle on most program material and in most listening situations.

I was recently in the Denver area a week ago and did notice some very bad network speeds on 3G. I'm guessing they have over subscribed their internet connection to their towers. In Salt Lake County, Utah I can successfully stream RP for 30 mins from my home to work with only one drop on 3G.

I must be spoiled, but I've been streaming RP at 128k for many years and really enjoy the quality. The 64k just seems to have a muffled sound.

I don't have any actual experience with AT&T's network. I use the app on an iPod Touch connected to Verizon's network (via a mobile WiFi router), and that works very well at 64k. 

I've heard some complaints similar to yours — and other people seem to have the app work just fine on iPhone/AT&T. The problems you describe can basically only be caused by poor network performance. There's nothing you can do differently, I'm afraid. 

I have an iPhone 3G now and I still can't get RP to connect via the RP iPhone app with anything but 24k.  At 64k it just goes on and off the network every few seconds.  At 24k I can get connected and stay connected for awhile, but I still get annoying intermitent outages to the point it's not worth trying to listen at all.  I'm not running an augmentation apps.  So basically my RP connection via my 3G iPhone is so poor even at 24k that it's not worth the aggravation to try anymore.  I don't know if it's just that the ATT network coverage in the entire Denver area is bad or what.  I live in a southern suburb and work in a northern suburb and have tried listening while commuting but it's just a pain.

Am I doing something wrong or not doing something I should be doing?   Anything that might actually work would be appreciated.

I think it's wonderful that Stormy Productions created the iPhone app, I only wish they would enable 128k streaming on 3G. I understand that Apple has rules against streaming at that rate while on their network. The problem is that out of all of the apps available to stream RP, this is the only one following the rules. All of the other apps have an ability to enable higher bit rates in the preferences. I'm not sure how they get away with it; they must have found a loop hole.

Even though there are many other apps, I still like the RP app the most. Luckily I figured out how to trick it into thinking it's one WiFi and thus stream 128k. Unfortunately it takes a little work:

1. Your phone must be jailbroken. Search the net for help with this.
2. Install VoIPover3G and iFile from the Cydia installer.
3. Connect to WiFi on the same network as your computer or peer-to-peer.
3. Open iFile and click the Webserver icon. (2nd from the left)
4. Browse to http://:8080
5. Browse to /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/ and save VoIPover3G.plist to your computer.
6. Open VoIPover3G.plist in a text editor and change the text to read:

Filter = {Bundles = ("com.Fringland.Fring", "com.skype.skype", "com.stormyprods.radioparadise");};

7. Upload VoIPover3G.plist back to the iPhone.
8. Close iFile and disconnect from WiFi.
9. Run RP in 128k, rejoice!
