Rachel Maddow's Quiet War

by Ben Wallace-Wells
RollingStone
June 27, 2012

Maddow's talent is explication, of rendering complex topics clearly, and so her show, uniquely for cable news, reserves the first 18 minutes of airtime for a lengthy essay, a deconstruction of a single political topic, usually some obscure conservative shift in a state legislature, or some ripple in the foreign-policy universe that has gone unnoticed. Most political talk shows are filmed so tightly that the heads of their hosts fill the screen, so that the host's personality is front and center. The Rachel Maddow Show uses a far wider shot, so that Maddow herself occupies a smaller part of the screen, off to the side. The shift is subtle, but the message is starkly different. Bill O'Reilly, on Fox News, is a combatant and a champion. Maddow is a guide. O'Reilly's show says, Look at me. Maddow's says, Picture this...

But courage had a cost. Someone clipped the interview when it ran and mailed it to her parents. Reading the Stanford Daily is how they found out their daughter was gay. "They took it poorly at first," Maddow has said.

This was 1990, during the most acute moment of the AIDS crisis. From Maddow's perspective, from within the activist movement, American power and authority looked particularly callous and twisted during the late Reagan era. "Never mentioning AIDS?" Maddow says. "I mean, he totally fucking blew it." When William F. Buckley showed up to speak at Stanford, drawing legions of conservatives in suits, Maddow helped organize a protest with signs that read, "Thank you for wearing a suit and tie in support of gay rights." When she won a Rhodes scholarship — the first out lesbian to ever have done so — Maddow was invited to give a speech to a local group that promoted women's leadership. She titled her speech "The difference between leadership and winning things."...

But she also did odd jobs for money — unloading trucks, landscaping — and eventually stumbled into a job as a morning news reader on a local radio station in Northampton. As the gig became a little bigger — she got to play her favorite music, Lucero and Radiohead, what McDonough calls "sad white-boy stuff" — she discovered that she liked it...

"A huge part of her success," says Lewis, "is that she doesn't come out as angry."

It is a trait — one of many — that she shares with President Obama, the ex-community organizer, superstar scholar and ceiling-breaker. Like her, Obama is part of a tidal movement in American liberalism, in which genuinely outsider perspectives have begun to work their way into the mainstream. (Maddow's own identity as an activist, for example, is a big part of what earns her the trust of a television audience; a decade ago it would have disqualified her from having one.) What keeps Maddow from fully joining this migration is her instinctive skepticism toward power, her distaste for the kinds of compromises necessary to see your ideas become the establishment's. To Maddow, the difference between her and Obama is simple. "He's a centrist Democrat," she says. "I'm a liberal."...

In defense of Maddow.  yeah, she gets playful.  But there's also stuff like this.

This is important stuff.  Not "bomb" dropping.  Not opinion, not infotainment.  Things we should be awake to.

Abortion murders story.

I'd hardly call it serious though.
96% of the media is owned by agents of the greatest crime syndicate on planet earth, the same syndicate that wants to shut down the Internet incidentally. Maddow, Beck & O’Reilly are nothing but hyped-up showbiz type distractions that keep the masses focus away from the real issues impacting our lives, namely the imperialist agenda of this crime syndicate. So they use meaningless hot-button issues punted by Maddow/Beck that keep the dumbed-down public divided & distracted. The alt media is filled with evidence of the syndicate’s crimes every single day while the mass media might mention the crimes in passing while spinning the circumstances & details in a light that favors the syndicate. Which of course they will since it’s the syndicate that pays their exorbitant salaries. So on second thoughts Maddow is quite definitely not ok. She’s a whore

Once, at my job, realizing that it was very late and that I was gonna have to be back very early, I joked "I might as well just go sleep in my car."

The housekeeper, whom I really enjoyed talking with, said "That's what I do." And it was true. She lived in her truck, and came in each morning to shower in the locker room before the rest of the workers got in.

Although an innocent joke, I felt terrible. Of course, she volunteered it, so she must've felt comfortable saying it. Still.

I don't mind saying that I now make only $9.80 hr for 25 hours per week for a $980 monthly gross that allows me to keep my SSD benefits coming in (which I earned over 40 years of working thank you very much).  The 25 hours are all I can handle, I still fatigue real fast.  The premiums for my Health Insurance now cost my employer $1400 a month and that is for a high deductable, high copay situation.  I am way over qualified for what I do.  Yet I love what I do and am grateful that my employers do not hold my over education for the position against me.

But I have a job, health insurance and do not live on the street.  I become eligable for Medicare come February 2011, which will replace my work benefits, which I will probably lose next premium review anyway as the costs will go up another 25% at least making for a monthly  premium of about $1800 a month.  That falls into Cadillac coverage prices with taxes on the insurance because due to its cost, it will be considered Cadillac, regardless of the coverage, yet is is far from that.  I cover my wife as well, so she will lose her's.  The insurance was fun while it lasted and I'm real glad I got sick before all this health care reform crap jumped off.  If I had got sick later, I see myself as dead, knowing what I know having gone through all this stuff already.

I'll take something over nothing, anyday.  Plus, I've always heard its easier to find a job when you already have one.  Has that changed as well ?

These are the rules and I got to play by them if I don't want to have to move into a refrigerator box.
I once called a refrigerator box 'home'. It was 1968, December. My box was on the third floor landing of a clothing manufacturing building on Second Ave near St. Mark's Place on the Lower East Side of NYC. I had accommodated it with a blanket and pillow and it was a place to keep my other pair of jeans and a spare shirt, as well as some letters from my family.  I returned home one night to find another fellow occupying my box. I firmly but politely informed him that he was in my box. I was met with a tirade that began with "FUCK YOU..." At this point I had to get direct with him and told him to get the F out of my bed and home. He shouted further and then threatened me, saying if I didn't get the F out of here he was gonna get up and cut me. Well, on the streets there is no such thing as a hollow threat. A threat of violence made is understood as the reliability of the threat being carried out. So I grabbed him by the hair and yanked him half way out of my box, pulling him towards the stairway. As he scrambled to his feet I sliced him across the forehead, then his right wrist. Shrieking, blinded by the blood pouring into his eyes, he ran down the stairs and out the building. I was then able to reclaim my refrigerator box, my home, my castle.

Thanks for the thoughts, rt.  I have income limits now with SSD, that I must respect in order to keep it.  If I make $1001 dollars in a month, the SSD is gone, period end of story.  No prorating of benefits due to varying income.  That's why I must limit my earned income to just $980 per month in order to not go over the $1000 per month limit.  My insurance premium is totally paid by my employer.

Been there...done that. But let me tell you, everyone wants everything for free.

It was kind of fun to look at Craigslist Cleveland. Brought back a lot of memories.

Everything's changed. The way a job is found has changed. It's a real challenge for me. I can't stand going to social networking events. What do introverts do?
