For the love of dogs — Aeon Videos For anyone familiar with Asperger’s syndrome, 11-year-old Cory’s symptoms will come as no surprise: the autism spectrum disorder makes him frequently unable to read non-verbal social cues and obsessively focused on interests. Clearly intelligent but also very different from his peers, Cory suffers bullying and longs for acceptance at school. His parents hope that their son’s encyclopedic canine knowledge and, in particular, the family’s planned road trip to the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, might help Cory forge human connections.

is it nature or nurture? Could be the nurturing before birth caused the empathetic nature.

is it nature or nurture? Either way, you can blame your parents for your shortcomings.

I will always be your friend and stick up for you when those kids are being mean. I just wanted you to know that. I love you (as a friend), name removed.
I want to give this little girl and her parents a big squeezy hug for raising such a fantastic and empathetic kid who has the guts to stand up for an underdog. I'm going to go cry now. Wow, some people are still doing it right. Very cool.

This diagnosis is by autopsy, so I doubt it. It's not also clear to me if the observation is conclusive. We need to see a lot more data to establish first correlation, then causation. We may be able to identify the cortex irregularities via some kind of imaging, but this is breaking news and I'm sure there is quite a scramble going on to put this data into the context of what little we do know about the condition.

The symptoms of autism may not be obvious until a child is a toddler, but the disorder itself appears to begin well before birth. Brain tissue taken from children who died and also happened to have autism revealed patches of disorganization in the cortex, a thin sheet of cells that's critical for learning and memory, in the New England Journal of Medicine. Tissue samples from children without autism didn't have those characteristic patches. Organization of the cortex begins in the second trimester of pregnancy. "So something must have gone wrong at or before that time," says , an author of the paper and director of the Autism Center of Excellence at the University of California, San Diego. The finding should bolster efforts to understand how genes control brain development and lead to autism. It also suggests that treatment should start early in childhood, when the brain is capable of rewiring to work around damaged areas.
