Lying here between your progeny and your Visa card statement
Beside the coffee stained torn envelope
We took your facsimile and we pinned it to the wall
Here on the other side of the world
You call here when it's 3 AM and we hear music playing
You call here and you don't have time to talk
You call in on your cell phone but you're cutting out
Here on the other side of the world
You send in electronic mail transmissions
Dispatches from your colonies - your Commonwealth
But your syntax is distracted and your sideways happy face
Is not on the other side of the world
from the girl
with the starry eyes
and the easy smile
she's just sitting there
Could I stay a while?
Lying here between your progeny and your Visa card statement
Beside the coffee stained torn envelope
We took your facsimile and we pinned it to the wall
Here on the other side of the world

Someone's been listening to Bill Nelson.

I vote this my favorite post of the bunch so far. I also vote Lloyd Cole one of my favorite Scots. More useless info: I like his stuff composed with the Commotions in the 80's even better. 'Rattlesnakes' is a short but totally hip/smart collection of songs-if you're into that kind of thing....

from the lyrics, I thought this was some sort of parody on song writing...please tell me this is a parody

"Lying here between your progeny and your Visa card statement" - hardly the most inspiring start to a song, is it? Even less inspiring is the delivery. Mute after 10 secs, sadly.
Lame.
Yawn!!!!
This song sounds like something from Flight of the Concords, except that it's unfortunately not a parody...

Ditto - Rattlesnakes - there's also a compilation - 1984-1989, which is a great starting point.
I agree that this song doesn't represent well at all the depth of this mans genius.
But the genius is there. Go back to those early pieces - Mr. Malcontent, Perfect Skin, Rattlesnakes, etal.
mmmmm. . . Perfect Skin. . .

Nope, Lloyd Cole was having his hits as the front man of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions round about the same time as The The were making their first impact: The The's breakthrough album Soul Mining came out in 1983, the year before The Commotions' debut Rattlesnakes. Cole's voice isn't a million miles away from Matt Johnson's, so I can see where you are coming from, but it's not the same man. Go and buy Rattlesnakes and Soul Mining NOW - it's an order. "Read Norman Mailer, or get a new tailor".

Damn, everyone agrees with this view. Now it's ruined for me! Too bad, cuz' the music is beautiful. If he just wouldn't have said "progeny" I think you all would have left it alone. One danged misplaced "fascimile" and everyone freaks out. Geez. ;)
Lloyd Cole is alright.

Contrived, forced lyrics.

Yea, I don't get what's up with the lyrics. The song was released in 2003...my keen observations note that 2003 was only three years ago...

What a nice observation! Although I can't honestly say I agree with you about the song. If he was forced to write this song with a word bank ... he did a hell of a job.
I actually kinda like the lyrics. Makes me smile.

Hehe... "electronic mail transmission." I don't think I've ever heard an e-mail called all that before!
Not too shabby song, though the lyrics seem kinda awkward to me. I give it a 6.
lloyd is awesome.

Lloyd Cole is one of those strange artists that I like 98% yet I can't keep from dwelling on that 2% that I can't put my finger on but somehow keeps me from liking him. Odd. I wish I could figure it out.

thought it was a u2 song. The style of singing where he emphasizes certain words to make them sound more deep and meaningful (d&m you know?) reminds me of bono. I'm not really fond of that style, if the lyrics carry meaning you don't need to emphasize them. Bono's singing gets on my nerves that way sometimes.
For those turned off by this tune. Give it some time to sink in. I followed Cole since his "Don't Get Wierd on Me Babe" song and find him to be a fascinating songwriter. Also saw him solo in Chicago, and even with a bad cold, he put on a great show.
If this is the best song off the album, the album must be absolutely terrible.
Please stopp! :P

I could not disagree more strongly. I bought this disc, and found it a little dry at first, but after about three listenings it really grew on me. There is a wonderfully understated subtlety to both the lyrics and the musical arrangement. Before I knew it, I was listening to the disc almost every day for more than a month.

Saw Lloyd Cole live at St Albans Arena in the UK in March 2004 ; Didn't know what to expect after all these years- what we got was one of the most charming, intelligent live acoustic sets I've seen.
OK - you have to be of the right generation - but if you are, Lloyd Cole still sings it like it is.
Absolutely, I saw him around the same time at the Royal Festival Hall, he held the audience spellbound for two hours - just him and a guitar. An amazing performance. He is playing again, with the Commotions, in London in October. It should be great.
Very nice! The guitars are so melty and simple. I only heard a few songs from him back in the 80's and liked him. I guess I still do.
Now this is wonderful, RP - Thank You!!!!
