Drinking in the morning sun
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off a heavy one
Heavy like a loaded gun

What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

Someone tell me how I feel
It's silly wrong, but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like a final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with you half awake
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

When my face is chamois creased
If you think I wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with you half awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

So throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right for life

Throw those curtains wide '' 'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes''
One day like this a year would see me right ''And only now I see the light''
Throw those curtains wide '' 'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes''
One day like this a year would see me right ''And only now I see the light''

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

simply perfect
A strong candidate for one of the most poignant voices in rock today.
A gorgeous song..
This is an excellent album btw - thank you RP for exposing me to Elbow.
"One day like this a year would see me right"
Love those persistent octaves.  So full of optimism and energy.

Saw them live in Oakland a few years back. Fantastic
The best album of this century
This song always gives me a lift. The tenniest of tens on this late December morning.

I think you're right, if you don't mind me saying.

The opening  reminds me of Alice Coltrain
Such a beautiful song ,Guy's voice and the lyrics are so touching. Kiss me like a final meal...Wow
Holy cow, I love this song. 10/10.

You need to watch this from Glasto 2022 to understand how much this is loved :)
I keep wishing he’d get on with the, “Timothy Leary, Timothy Leary”, bits. Whole thing’s a bit monotonous, init!

Thank you RP turning me on to Elbow, this alone is worth my monthly contribution.
I've finally trained myself - every time I think I hear Sting's new album, I know its Elbow
A 10 all the way.
Love this band
This song could be so much better w/o the unending vamp, loose +/- 2 minutes and brilliant...
The repetitiveness hurts my feeble mind...{#Stop}
You know, I'm making the executive decision that the entire neighborhood needs to hear this.
Like someone else said, I'm so embarrassed to have never known them before I heard Bill play them a few years ago.
This is an unbelievable album!
And this anthem should have earned them a Grammy, although, I doubt they would have cared...
Great song. Great band.
I go see them whenever they are in town.
Oh those precious beautiful days.

same with me - but initially hearing "The Fix"
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like the Live Aid theme song? {#Stupid}
Love. Love. Love this song.
Definitely on my Anniversary play list
When I first heard it I focused on the plodding violins at the end and the schmaltz refrain. Then heard more from the album and returned to this song knowing they could  do almost anything, both musically and lyrically, and this was probably exactly what they wanted the song to be- a hopeful, upbeat march toward better times and better relationships. Years later I still love it and so much of the rest of their catalog. I hope you take the time to hear the album in its entirety and order. Perhaps you will feel a little different about it as it fades out next time.

And yet another band I never heard of  until I was introduced by RP!  This was the first song I heard and it is still my favourite song by them.
Reminds me of the time I nearly died from food poisoning in India.  3 days in I finally was well enough to stand, picked up the Ipod, put it on random, opened the curtains in the hell hole I was staying in, this song came on as if to lift me out of death back into life.
Stunning.  They are brilliant live.

I love this song despite the bittersweet memories and losses it reminds me of - days of hope...
It's funny how I gave it a "7" on first listen.  Then I changed it to "8" on next listen.  ... etc. etc.  I now have it as "10".  Cannot go higher I guess.
This song turned me on to Elbow via RP. It has cost me a fair bit of dosh as I have since purchased all of their CD's and even arranged to see them in concert a few years back on a trip across the pond to visit family. Great time.

One of my favorite "new" artists.  Finally someone who can stand at least in the shoes of Peter Gabriel!  Truly their music touches you and makes you feel!

Bill just quoted you after playing this song... a worthy sentence indeed.
Thanks for the initial introduction Alan Ashton!

Lovely song, even moreso when you pickup on those little piano chords that come in every 8 measures in the verses.

Don't know the biology behind why you can get the tingles and what makes your hairs rise, but this does it for me!
Bloke Rock. Brilliant.
Olá Bom dia, eu estou ouvindo a radio paraiso, aqui no sul do Brasil, na cidade de Porto Alegre, RS, Muito bom, é ótimo, Abraços.
sempre bella armonia - molto piacevole da ascoltare
Saw Elbow perform at The HOB San Diego in January, and they played this as the encore. All 2-300 fans lit the place up, it was something special. Thanks for bringing back that memory!

Simply Beautiful. Solid 9.

Smooth segue from Free of the Feeling by Jesca Hoop, who is a friend of Elbow. Nicely done!
I love this kind of tune. The voice is decent too. And it makes me think of the entertaining cats with cigarettes in the Independent Woman video.

I don’t disagree, but grandiose is an odd word to use in a positive way...
I seem to remember seeing a BBC At the Proms version of this. The entire audience was having the very best sing-along.  Needs to find that again.
Listening to this song while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020.  Such a beautiful song with a beautiful message.  It is what I needed to hear today.  Gloom abounds, but we are alive and together.  It's looking like a beautiful day.

I quite like this song - until he goes into painful repetition mode.
Now whenever it plays I'm reaching for PSD before the pain starts.
I can only think it must be luv....
I saw them last thursday in CDMX with amazing show, the first this 2020, although they owe me Mexican Standoff and The Fix!!!!
Drinking in the morning sun ...

Sounds like college, with an 8 am tequila sunrise.
What bam23 said
Anthemic !  As if Queen passed the torch and Elbow took it running !
just strikes the perfect chords on this perfect autumn day!

Great, if just for the rhyme of 'holy cow' with 'only now'
This is a really beautifully crafted piece of music that always catches me off guard. The instrumental part is remarkably in sync with the emotions in the words. Being high may increase the extent of my discernment, but not the underlying truth.

The Youtube video with the sign guy matches this song perfect.
This playlist is driving away my Monday morning blues on a wet cold day in the UK. Thank you Bill.

God, what a stunningly gorgeous song! Can't thank Bill and Rebecca enough for turning us onto this and so much deeply meaningful and moving music.
I don't know if anyone else noticed this, if it's below in previous comments.  About these two tracks -- Love Yourself by Boxer Rebellion and Elbow One Day Like This.  But the cover art of Boxer Rebellion is a photo of a curtain wide, and One Day Like This has the lyrics. Throw those curtains wide.

I'm preaching to the choir.  Or not saying anything not seen by someone else.
But umm, is this kind of epiphany, however small, possible anywhere else?
Always makes me smile when I hear this song come on.
Beautiful.
Thanks Bill.

[Edit]  I found it!  Who's Listening ?
I came 27 years late to Elbow; only introduced when Little Fictions came out (also when I was introduced to RP *smile*). How I missed the first six albums is beyond me. Absolutely blown away by these gentlemen. Guy Garvey's humour and romance and deep awareness of Life's textures and details combined with the entire band's impeccable musical chops. Aural food of the gods.
The YouTube video for this song with the guy spinning the advertising sign for new condos is great
LOVE THIS!!!
I'm bumping Elbow up to nine on this one. (Ouch!)
If you're considering seeing Elbow live, definitely do it.  They are awesome.
Also, just a heads up: this one is the sing-along one.  Know the words to this one.
the lyric feature is great... today's the first day in 10 years i know what the words to this song are.
This brings back memories from the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.  Outstanding.
