you face the blue and wish the roof would open up
but arches of commerce have made the sky corrupt

go down

break the code of death for profit break the guns
break the silence of money break the greedy unison

go down

maybe someday you'll come back to me

find the mystical connection find the dreams
under cynical wreckage find the winding conscious stream

go down

maybe someday you'll come back to me

Wow, that would be quite the lineup! Imagine them doing a Puss’n’Boots or Case-Lang-Viers type project. That would be fun (or terrible, if for some reason they don’t get along).

Hold it.

The lyrics:  "Go down". Repeated. Almost like an order.  Then I look at her face.

Hey!  I mean hey!  You know what I'm saying?
I would prefer Shawn Phillips!
those chorus harmonies are quirky, kinda funny

Elvis lives. Visit Vegas.

THAT'S IT!
Quite possibly the last cassette I ever bought and only because the shop didn't have this on CD. And I wore that cassette out. A really great example of 90s alternative.

Great voice!!
Been listening to Sam forever and T-Bone Burnett produced this album - he’s a God.
Love Sam's voice.
Something like a triangle doing morse is hitting my resonant spot in my hearing...
I don't know much Sam Phillips but I just learned to play Reflecting Light.. in the very few songs I know I really like her lyrics.

sam phillips is great when she's on. introduced to her by a norwegian soldier on leave with his mega hot girlfriend when they discovered the same deserted hotel in jamaica that errol flynn owned in the 30's. it was a ruin that no one seemed to pay attention to at night. the guy was a power keg, and they apologized for playing sam phillips as we stood really stoned hoping they didn't kill us. good times.

BTW after what 12 years, they still follow you.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAH you have GOT to be kiddin ... Quite the opposite.

Never heard it before. RP does it again. And a timely, evocative, spot-on song it is.
Love it!  Thanks for playing more Sam, RP!
Odd voice, odd as the Silversun Pickups guy.

DOWN AGAIN ?!?!?
So what's next when we finally get down? Don't Bring Me Down, Down By The Seaside, Down to the Waterline, Down On The Corner, Down In The Boondocks, Down Under?

Following Bruce. In a double sense. Huh?
She looks so young to have discovered Elvis.
Love this album!
First listen, sweet to the ears.

I would purely love to be on the dinner-invite list she and T-Bone must put together every once in a while.
God yes. I also like to imagine an alternate universe where Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits are still together. And invite me to dinner once in a while.

Great album, great song.
I used to have this disc. It was stolen from my car and I never got around to replacing it but I always loved this track.
Yep, I'm liking this very much. Tasty, intelligent, impressive indeed.

Oh wouldn't that be a hoot! The dinner music would be fantastic. I absolutely LOVE the chorus on this song too!

Really? I find her voice nauseating.
It's not that it's horrible, but nothing about this song I seem to enjoy much.
any relation to utah philips?
Really interesting and innovative backing - I liked it a lot - can't quite pin down what the 'Bendy Banjo' sound's coming from - must do a search to find out.

I'm usually very forgiving of poor vocalizing as long as its emotive, but Sam is, well, TOO emotive. Read: pouty. Rubs me the wrong way. (shrug)
I can see that but Sam is not nearly as bad as some - Melissa Ehtridge is one of those emotive singers I just can't stand. She does it on EVERY song.
This seems like Crowded House somehow. I like it.

Can't believe you even put Amy Grant on that list.
Didn't she used to own Sun Records and record Elvis and Johnny Cash and all those guys? Actually, I'm indebted to RP for introducing me to both Sam Phillips and Patti Griffin. Love each of them.

Sam has the most erotic, hypnotizing, wonderful voice I've ever heard. To think that she started her career as a Christian singer is amazing. Keep playing all the Sam you have.

Frodo had his Sam, I've got mine... A 9.
*yawn* was my first reaction, but it is a nice chorus and it is well produced. Not bad that bad....

Being married to T-Bone Burnett has something to do with it. He's produced Counting Crows, Wallflowers, Jackson Browne, Los Lobos ,and the soundtrack to O Brother among others.
Didn't take much for Copans to bait you into that one did it? I can still hear the "duh" more than a year later.
yikes...painful song
Turn. It. UP!
What a chorus.
Exciting, raw. Wotta woman.
A great song from one of her better albums. :)
As little as I\'ve listened to RP lately this song is already getting very old.
I wonder how come her albums are always so well produced
Sam rules.
Never heard of Sam Phillips before and I have one word for this song: Yawn!
Love this album and Martinis & Bikinis!!! :D
Her sound on this song reminds me a lot of Laura Love.
