I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game

With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
I will try and shake away this disease

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

I am still dreaming of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away
I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fall back crutch anymore

I'll walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and rising in my own weird way
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore

I just want to feel some sunshine
I just want to find some place to be alone

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

Oh, yeah, watch the world die
Yeah, yeah, watch the world die
Whoa, yeah, watch the world die
Yeah, watch the world die

Not feelin' it today. Fun song but it got overplayed.

I've always found it fascinating when songs don't have the title in the lyrics.

OH Bill you have such an excellent choice of music throughout the variations which this artform offers.
But this is simply crap... kick it out of the RP playlist - its rotten canned foot among a buffet of delicious homemade food
I like it!!!

How did you get the idea that that's yours to decide?
I think they were practicing Joe Walsh guitar chord progressions
Fun little rockin' tune.
Sometimes when you go past the breakers at Jones Beach, Long Island - it's very hard to come back. Beware of Rip-Currents and don't swim without a Lifeguard. However It is FUN.

Great memories - cheating companies out of the money they were trying to cheat me out of!

The perfect post-divorce song?
I have been in a bar when this came out and the whole place started singing it...
it'll be a short swim soon, to watch the world die
This Everclear track is OK to me, I wasn't much a fan of the grunge or post-grunge acts back then, though I do have a strong memory associated with their only top 40 hit (Wonderful) so it gets a 6+1 for the other song...Long Live RP!!
I dunno.  I think of Redondo Beach when I hear this song, not Santa Monica ...

That's an outstanding comparison. This isn't the greatest song but I can feel your pain when I imagine NPR's dry-wit commentary trying to capture the bloodbaths of GoT.

I always get annoyed when the guy sings "stupid game"--it always sounds like "stool pigeon" with a hard "g". I just want to kick the slacker in the shins or throw one of his shoes at him.

I dunno...it continues to grow on me.  Maybe because I'm aging and the romantic regret seems poetic?  Oh geez...I'm old.
This band and all their songs reminds me of the years I spent living in California. Excellent song!

This song sure, but the rest of the album is outstanding.
I understand that this must have been played into the ground in California but in the rest of the world (eg. YVR) Everclear is criminally absent from the airwaves. ..
Fun to hear this again after a very long time....great tune before killed by radio.

Agreed.

Top 40 radio absolutely killed it.

underrated band imo-
love it.

This song was good enough to lure me to purchase the album. Don't listen to it much, but still like this song.
It's nice to shake things up every now and then, and a little punk rock never hurt anyone! My friend and I used to jam on this when we where first learning to play (me drums, him gutiar). Great memories...

I mean, don't get me wrong— I really like a lot of stuff these guys did, especially early on, and it goes without saying that The Purple One is a genius....... I just never thought I'd hear either one of them on here... : )

PSD please??
great segue from kristin hersh!

such a fun song. saw them a long, long time ago when this first came out. fun band.

God, how I love this album. This is probably my least favorite track off of it only cause of overexposure, but man what a romp!

perfect song for how i am feeling right now.
i don't want to be your fall-back crutch.

ACK! I had to turn the volume down on this one. I guess I'm just not in the mood for this type of song tonight.

You guys are nuts. It's got a great hook, but I particularly love the lyrics. Everclear is a grunge band with more of an upbeat attitude. He's picking himself up after getting dumped. Dump me? Screw you! I'm going to the beach!

This song has been played to death by main stream music outlets.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I thought it was boring then, and figured it wouldn't be around for long. It's still boring, but now it's also been horribly overplayed. Ugh.
why does bill have the single to wonderful up for this, instead of the full album (sparkle and fade) up? fab song, btw. the only good album everclear ever did.
terrific video too - anyone know who the actoress (who play\'s Art\'s girlfriend) is? She looks so familiar...
Love it. Love the album and the one after.
dum,dum...dumdumdumdumdumdum (repeat, ad nauseam). What ingested substance makes this one sound like music?!
\"Out in California\", \"California\", then \"Santa Monica\" - sounds like the Bill needs to play some Beach Boys next (\"California Dreaming\")
A good example of how boring rockmusic can be. Kept waiting for something to happen or develop, but they only added some more distorted guitars, so the singer had to shout a bit more. Meaningless to shout \'watch the world die\' and hold nothing against it, by the way. Gone after you hear it.
:D Just simple and fun. Upbeat! (well the music anyway)
