Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon
Let her pale light in to fill up your room
You've been living underground
Eating from a can
You've been running away
From what you don't understand...
Love

She's slippy
You're sliding down
She'll be there when you hit the ground

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways

Johnny take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel

(on your knees boy)

She's the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
Lift my days, light up my nights

One day you will look...back
And you'll see...where
You were held...how
By this love...while
You could stand...there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright (Love, love)
She moves in mysterious ways (Oh no, oh no)
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright (Move you, spirit, move, making love)
Spirit moves in mysterious ways (Yeah, move, yeah, move, make love)
It's alright, it's alright, alright (You move with it, she moves with it)
Lift my days, light up my nights, love

How the hell did this song get to be 34 years old!? Wonderful, wonderful album! Wonderful, wonderful song!

GREAT ALBUM & GREAT TUNE!!  I like a LOT of their tunes.  I find it very difficult to apply BEST to any of them.  Thanx RP!

I Agree. Same here.
RP comments on this are 20 years old now.  I think its stood the test of time.

Although my internal clock knows the timing, the sound here is relatively timeless.  My kids would not have any idea this is nearly 30 years old now.
I love this song! ...especially the bass line!
Achtung Baby is by far their best album ever.
Every so often I hear a song on RP and say to myself "I need to go listen to that album again...end to end".

This is one of those albums.
U2 is one of the rock bands that I actually know all of the band member's names.  Aren't too many other bands nowadays - maybe none - that I can name all the members. I wonder why? Maybe they are one of those bands where I studied the album liner notes back in the day.
Great song from their best album by far
Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of U2 when they first broke...I didn't really start liking them until Achtung Baby, when I felt they stopped trying to be "important" and just made cathy pop tunes. Which is I think the opposite of what happened to the OG fans.

Don't think so.  It's there, midway down the lyrics sheet; after (on your knees boy).
I could have sworn RP played this yesterday. No matter - it's a fine tune. Doesn't always work for U2 playing music which doesn't have their house sound, but this works well. When Love Comes To Town and Love Rescue me do not work at all. At least U2 have managed to avoid the fatal error of a white band playing anything with a reggae twist....in the studio that is.
They changed the "she sees the man inside the child" lyrics in this?

Only song from a later album that to me comes a bit close is Magnificent.

This has to be one of the best U2 songs in my opinion.

At the top of their game and it has an Irish vibe with the names of the characters in the lyrics.

So as Fred_Riley might say - a 10 from the Ulster jury.

A 10 from me as well ... my favorite song by U2, and that's high praise!

So many better ones to play. This is weak. Thank you.
An Irish friend told me this one: what's the difference between Bono and God? Answer: God doesn't wander around Dublin thinking he's Bono.

So I'm gonna state the obvious just in case folks haven't noticed it:
This is a religious song, and Bono is simply singing about God while using the example of a woman. It has nothing to do with how a woman moves.

God works in mysterious ways. If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel. Etc.

From that perspective, it's a really well-written song. I'm not a big U2 fan, except for Unforgettable Fire, but I gotta respect the craft here.

You may find this interpretation obvious.  I find it to be more than a bit of a stretch.  Why would they feel the need to disguise "God works in mysterious ways" as "She moves in mysterious ways"?

You've taken the "better learn how to kneel" line out of its context.

I've noticed the similarity to the old saw, but that hardly makes it a song about the supernatural.

Your comment is so ignorant of history that it almost needs to be completely ignored, but I'll bite.

How do you think these corrupt leaders rose to power? Were they educated by Western colonizers? Did they cut a deal with a multinational corporation to trade mineral/fossil fuel rights for power? Were they the leader of a political/military power who's opposition to communism made Western powers overlook their horrible human rights abuses? Or, were they elected freely only to go on and solidify power/change their countries constitution/eliminate their rivals? Did they leverage their country's few resources to the World Bank in exchange for loans they could never afford to pay back?

The reason why countries stay poor is because its far more expedient for richer, more powerful nations to subjugate less powerful and underdeveloped nations. We take for granted all the aspects of our well developed societies in the west; laws that people follow, courts that work, a system of health care, fair elections - but these institutions are still developing in the poorer countries Bono tries to help. That's why their called "Developing Nations."

Bono has every right to expect ask rich countries to chip in when "disasters" like the AIDS epidemic strike. After all, we profit from them on so many levels.

Food for thought.
U2 hysteria is undeserved and unwarranted in my view.
Bono... (what the hell is a "bono" anyway) is a self-absorbed narcissistic wannabe important person.
What ever happened to the concept that in order to have credibility in a field... or political topic or discipline, one first has to achieve, earn and demonstrate some justification for holding that credibility?
Please, lead singer in a mediocre band... leads to too much time on his hands and too much income... which leads to delusions of grandeur.

As for the "rich countries owe poor countries something" philosophical concept... no country owes any other country anything, unless they inflict harm on the "other" country somehow.
Poor countries are poor for demonstrable reasons, usually because of horribly massively oppressively corrupt leadership subjugating the general population.

It galls me to rate U2 this high - most of their output flat out bores me - but this seems like a solid 8.  This slinky, sexy groove still sounds fresh and exciting all these years later.

Re St. Bono's political activism.

I like the music, and do not agree with the content of his activism but would invite those of you who oppose to at least understand it.

Bono believes that western countries owe poor, developing countries much assistance.  He apparently believes that large amounts of gifted aid will help.  it makes perfect sense for him to hob nob because countries like the USA and Great Britain because these states have access to the biggest pools of resources.

Bono is not leading a fight against the contemporary ethnic cleansing or vestiges of western violent colonialism.

St Bonio invites 'strong opinions' on account of his hobnobbing with world leaders, moralist preaching, serious wealth, and tax avoidance. If he stuck to playing music folk would be more concerned by his musical ability than his personality. I was ok about U2, despite being a militant atheist, before he became a self-publicising world figure lending spurious legitimacy to Bush, Blair et al. Once he made himself a public figure, he deserved everything coming to him.

At what point is it possible to separate the music from the personalities I wonder? I'm guessing future generations, not blighted by daily press coverage will have a different angle on U2 etc. The antics of various classical composers I love, dating back a few hundred years, fortunately very rarely spoil the music for me.

The Trabant album! Dated to the fall of the Berlin wall (and Trabants)

Megalomaniacs (sorry 'world leaders') should be brought down, or at least brought down to earth, not hob-nobbed with. You wouldn't catch me hanging out with 'leaders'. St Bonio, Geldof and their like have made negative contributions to social justice by lending dictators (elective or imposed) social and moral legitimacy.

There's an old saying, popularised in the excellent and slyly satirical Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy: anyone who seeks power should on no account be allowed to have it.

Not to sound overly sensitive, but I think you're concept of "it's just music" should apply to Talking Heads as well as any other band out there that is not on your list of okay music. Tell us to lighten up over U2 so you can bash TH? WTF. I like em both, have most of their albums, but listen to them rarely. Why? Hell if I know. Groovin on Porcupine Tree at the moment. Next moment, something else. But I still keep it all in perspective. It's all good. And some is great.

All these arguments about music here being too 'mainstream' would dissolve away if people just didn't listen to so much popular music on the radio. I think that's why I can keep coming back to this album and others (good example: Any Zeppelin), I watch my intake of Popular Culture(TM). Too much and it all starts to seem stale. Or staler than it already is.
I was in the Peace Corp in Africa when this came out. Someone got hold of the tape. We rocked the grass hut hard to this Album, Stomped some serious Dung floor! Still works for me.

Agreed. This isn't an indie station. And there's nothing wrong with this song. Just because you've heard it on mainstream radio doesn't mean it doesn't belong here. The difference between RP and others is that RP will go out there and do sets like those songs. I, for one, enjoy hearing classics every now and then, as well as being exposed to stuff I've no knowledge of. And for the record, I've rated this song a 6, and you don't see me complaining. :)
