I just got paid today
Got me a pocket full of change
Said, I just got paid today
Got me a pocket full of change
If you believe like workin' hard all day
Just step in my shoes and take my pay

I was born my papa's son
When I hit the ground, I was on the run
I had one glad hand and the other behind
You can have yours, just give me mine
With the hound dog barkin' in the black of the night
Stick my hand in my pocket, everything's all right

I just got paid today
Got me a pocket full of change
Said, black sheep, black, do you got some wool?
Yes, I do, man, my bag is full
It's the root of evil and you know the rest
But it's way ahead of what's second best

Minimum wage in 1972 was $1.60 per hour. Let that sink in. Now it's only $7.25. How much hard labor are you willing to do for $7.25 and hour?
my dad loved this album.

the beginning of this song always makes me think it's going to be this song:
"...i can't sing i ain't pretty and my legs are thin. don't ask me what i think of you..."

oh, well.
gotta love the earlier ZZ Top albums
Dudes are the inspiration for my beard and my clothing style, can't believe they are from Texas, way too cool for that place man
You know you've got a great song when the rhythm guitar part in the solo would make a great lead track in a lesser song.
RIP Dusty Hill. 50 years in a band is amazing
Great Friday song!
Billy Gibbons at his BEST ~~~

How awesome is this song placed here and just after lunch as I het mesemerized from Quickbooks entries. One of fave from the boys, so cool!
OMG.....the memories this album brings back topped off by a drug and alcohol fueled weekend seeing them and some unknown opening act (Aerosmith  ) at the LA Forum in '75 (or was that '76?).  Woke up in the nice 'n' shiny Inglewood City jail.

Good times............
PEARLY GATES.

FAVORITE ZZT song... so good!
I esp lov the 1970's ZZ top. This is more like typical southern rock from the time.
I always liked Steve albinis’s take on this but first time I heard the original. Never really listened to these guys but this is excellent.
absolutely brilliant segue! demonstrates where Bombino got that ruff tone! It is NOT about perfect technique, clean shredding, theatrics..............Rock N Roll sounds best RUFF
I can name this tune in two notes or fewer.

Heard this for the first time in a smoke-filled apartment, volume at a modest level, but all twelve of us were solemnly quiet.  Album cover got passed around with reverential consideration of art and liner notes.   I remember asking for the album cover a couple of extra times, astonished at this full-on funky blues and the three weirdos that created it.

Blew my mind.  Still does.
every playlist needs a  dose of ZZ Top

Nonsense.  Controlling for education and work history, woman make 98% of what men make, and that difference is accounted for by men be more aggressive in seeking raises and new work (best way to get a raise). The other evidence is that in blind studies, women are slightly MORE likely to be hired.

Is there a hidden message in this 3-song set?
A true power trio. Sizzzzle!

{#Dancingbanana_2} was good then is good now ! the beards rock
Whatever happened to that good ole Texas sound: Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, ZZ, Johnny Winter, Townes...so many greats

Jus a couple guys puttin out ALOT of sound
A fine groove from the Texans - I'm off for another futile twiddling with my amplifier to try to get close to that sweet guitar sound... {#Guitarist}
I likes me some Zed Zed.
Why is it that the only guy in the band without a beard is named Frank Beard? That is sooooo messed up...{#Lol}

ZZ Top RULES, one of my favourite music bands!

I had a bass just like that around 1971 except Fender had reissued it as the Fender Telecaster Bass. (It had) One single coil pick up, one tone and one volume control, and a neck like a log. The tone was great.

 just recognized that today is payday. thanks!

Perhaps it's because they are both from the same part of the country, but I'm hearing a lot of Billy Gibbons phrasings in many of Lucinda Williams's recordings.   Wow... what a duet that would make: ZZTop w/ Lucinda on lead voca!

Well they suck ass of course.
I am SO in the mood for this now!  Long, hot day working outside (the wind had blown over all the trees and shrubs so I spent about an hour standing everything upright so I could water it - I'm still trying to understand why the guys who work at the nursery get ten dollars an hour and I work just as hard as they do and only make $8.25 an hour...{#Ask}) I just got home, watered my garden, cleaned three litterboxes, and then came in to hear this song.  Suddenly, everything is okay again. {#Meditate}{#Sunny}

Maybe went a lil commercial, but got to see them here in a real small hall Oct 2008.

Shit howdy was it fun,  They don't take themselves seriously, they were just plain having fun, enjoying being enjoyed.

I am definitely here for ZZ Top.  Among other things :)

Kudo's for RP to bring out golden oldies but I don't come here for ZZ Top.

This is the kind of song that is perfect live, on a hot day, with a couple of beers on board.  Wish I was there now . . .

They do seem to be a bit underrated.

In the mid 90s, Dusty Hill could quite often be found just hanging out at places like the Ginger Man and the Barley House in Dallas.  He sat in with all kinds of miscellaneous local acts, and it was a lot of fun just to talk to him.

Agreed, and how apropos is "Just Got Paid?"

This RAWKS, from back when the Top were a guilty pleasure of mine.

"Jesus Has Just Left Chicago" is on that list, too.

Rapeman did a decent cover of this.  I think I prefer it to the original, but not by much.  Good tune either way.

Good song to get us started on a holiday weekend!! {#Dancingbanana_2}
Wooooo Hoooooo! REAL ZZ!!!
This early stuff is about the only ZZ Top I can handle . . . before they became a cartoon self-parody, churning out cheesy videos and recycling the same tired riffs ad nauseum. I'll take "Waiting for the Bus" over "Legs" any day (the song that is).
Ahhhh................ a little Texas boogie to start the day... NICE!{#Wave}

 Ehh? Someone had to leave a city because she did not like the political climate? I mean — perhaps that was not the only factor?

Not that I wanted to turn this into a political discussion... but...

It is nice knowing there are folks on the left that see this.  One of my best friends is a socialist, which makes for very interesting conversations as you could imagine.  It's not the fact that someone is "left" that I dislike.  It's when they are so sure that anybody that disagrees with them is "evil"... and this is coming from the supposed tolerant crowd.

So, squidish, I probably agree with you on very little politically.  But I sure have a ton of respect for you after your comments.  {#Clap}
The unfortunate part for your friend is... Austin is such a great city, too bad she misses out on that due to intolerance.

Seriously?  Are you really serious?

This is just like the craiglist ads from people looking for a roommate.

"Roommate must be open minded.  No Republicans allowed"

The laughability of all those ads are lost on those that are so sure they are so "open minded".  The left is amazingly funny and they don't even realize it.
If you can't listen to ZZ Top because they are pro-Republican, I must be a saint being republican and a music fan... because if I was as judgemental as you, I wouldn't be able to listen to the radio at all.

Amazing...

I know nothing about their politics, I do know that Billy Gibbons donates a lot of money to art museums and to aging blues stars.

Back in 1970-73 ZZ Top was the national band of Texas and not yet widely known in the US. They were an incredible live act - I've seen them be called back for up to 5 encores. This song is from their second kick-ass album. Buy it - you won't be disappointed.

Ah-haw-haw-haw....

(and ZZTop's First Album, which was more raw and just as great)....

What about 'Manic Mechanic'?

The Top's early stuff is by far their best. Nice to hear Bill play some stuff many people dismiss as 'classic rock'.
