It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by
My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch
As tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin' things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by

Such an amazing song - would be perfect if only the 12-string had been in tune.

That helps to make it "special".   ...sometimes imperfection can be a GOOD THING!

GREAT TUNE!! ICONIC!!  I was 11yrs old when this came out, & I bought the 45. Brings back memories!  Thanx RP!
My sister had the Italian version of this on a 45. She loaned it to a local DJ and never got it back. Even so, I can still hear Mick singing in Italian in my head. "Il sole sta per tramontaaaaa...."
One of the first albums I bought- Sam Goody $3.00 ($6 for double albums).
Bill Wyman just turned 80. YIKES.

As classic as it gets ...... lots of memories

This is not a judgement or criticism, but for some reason, I'm reminded of Spinal Tap singing "All the Way Home" {#Cheesygrin}

1st time in eleven years!!

I guess we can expect it again in 2026, when I'll finally be retired (if not alive)...

Though people, who still believe in the "war" between those two bands won't agree, the Stones, in a way, followed in the Beatles' footsteps. But who didn't, somehow?! I believe they wrote this for Marianne Faithful.

Yeah, she released a recording of it before they did.
Still excellent (look! mop-top Willem Defoe on the cover photo)
Fifty Years.  Sometimes they missed  by a jot. Toss the strings on this original and listen to a modern live version.
i just love the brian jones-era stones stuff.
Nice transition from Supergrass's "Evening of the Day"
A very evocative song - makes me think of black & white newsreels of Mick and poor, doomed Brian Jones. Well done for playing this. Yeah - think it was for Marianne.

aha!!! It all makes sense now!!!
I read somewhere that two of them were locked / locked themselves in a bathroom and had to come up with a song before they could leave. Wonder if its got a blue plaque on the wall?
