Activity's killing the actor
And a cop's standing out in the road turning traffic away
There was nothing she could do until after
When his body had been buried below, way back in the day
Oh my, nothing else could have been done
Made his life a lie so
He might never have to know anyone
Made his life the lie you know
I told him that he shouldn't upset her
And that he'd only be making it worse involving somebody else
But I knew that he'd never forget her
While her memory worked in reverse to keep her safe from herself
And oh my, nothing else could have been done
She made her life a lie so
She might never have to know anyone
Made her life the lie you know
What I used to be
Will pass away and then you'll see
That all I want now
Is happiness for you and me
What I used to be
Will pass away and then you'll see
That all I want now
Is happiness for you and me
What I used to be
Will pass away and then you'll see
That all I want now
Is happiness for you and me
All I want now is happiness for you and me
And a cop's standing out in the road turning traffic away
There was nothing she could do until after
When his body had been buried below, way back in the day
Oh my, nothing else could have been done
Made his life a lie so

the Beatles put out new albums all the time. even Jeff Buckley puts out new albums, queen, Eliott Smith has some new ones in recent years, and I'm sure will have a new one out soon enough.
Strange. I think Misery would be a more appropriate title.

You don' even have to google him - just click the Wikipedia entry thoughtfully provided by Bill with all RP track entries. Fab, man.
Not even marginal.
huh-I just had a thought but it was a dud. Since My Old School was on before this I was thinking of Elliott Randall who played with Steely Dan.

There are quite a few of them on here who will never be 64.
Joplin, Hendix, Cobain, Morrison (and others) all died at 27. One turns 10,000 days old at 27 and 138 days, give or take a day for leap years. I was curious to see if they all died on their 10,000th day. Close, but no.

OMG Bill I laughed but that is AWFUL!
But on the other hand, thanks for playing Elliot Smith!

rubbish cover; waiting for him to move me.
Cover? Of what? By whom? As far as I know, this is/was/will forever be his song.
And a damn great one at that.
One of the best songs of all time. The ending, with the 'what i used to be...' part is one of the most powerful short-segments in music, for me.
rubbish cover; waiting for him to move me.
yeah, its hard not to be tempeted to give every ES song a 10, kinda like with the beatles. This isn't my absolute fav so, I guess I wont rate it. but its a 10.
I love Elliott Smith but this isn't my favorite...
An Elliott Smith song should never receive fewer than 2 comments per play. ;)

Bill, you could play all his records, chronologically, in a row and I'll be a happy bastard for some 6 hours or so...
And me!
This starts out like the bizarro version of Lay Lady lay

I remember thinking when this album came out, "damn, he's STILL depressed, wow"

First Neko, then this? You're pushing my emotional buttons this morning, RP.
I give many of his songs a 10, but this is among his very best. This album was his most heavily produced. Some really liked it, some like the rawer stuff better. This song though, is Elliott at his most lush. Arching and wistful at the same time. I actually don't consider this a sad song at all. Fantastic.
This album is great. Gets better with time.
at last, a song tonite with some punch to it--that hits home in my emotional state.

I was a fan of Elliott since "Good Will Hunting," so I'm lucky to have known him while he was alive, although I'm certainly feeling some guilt about not being able to help him, even though I didn't even KNOW him.
However, I felt the exact same as you when I discovered Jeff Buckley, years after he'd died. I believed if I'd bought his albums, he might not have been so self-destructive and he'd still be around when I discovered him. Then Elliott killed himself, and I saw my misconceptions for what they were. I mean, hell, I bought EVERY RECORD. Now I'm in a place where I say, "Fuck, they're rock stars, I don't know them, they don't know me, I have enough friends dying, who needs that shit."

Happiness is my favorite Elliott Smith song -- and one of my favorite songs of all time. Whenever I hear it, I can't believe that someone so talented took his life (or was killed, to those of you who subscribe to the murder theory). He was such an extraordinary songwriter, and this song is proof of it.
I love the overall sound and feeling of this track. It really is perfect.

I think I read where they are coming out with a album of stuff he was working on before he died.
