Well when I was a young boy
I used to slip away
Down to the Ashgrove
To hear the old blues men play
There was Big Joe and Lightnin'
And Reverend Gary too
Well I'd sit and stare and dream
Of doin' what they could do.

Well it's been thirty years since the Ashgrove burned down
And I'm out on this highway travelin' town to town
Tryin' to make a livin'
Tryin' to pay the rent
Tryin' to figure out where my life went.

I wanna go back to the Ashgrove
That's where I come from
I wanna go back to the Ashgrove
That's where I belong.

Well you don't have to go searchin'
Pretend to put on airs
'Cause the blues are gonna find you someday, somewhere
Now my mother's gone
Now my father's gone
And all the old blues men have all passed on
And I'm out on this highway travelin' town to town
Settin' up my gear and then I'm tearin' it down
Turnin' up my guitar
Standin' on the stage
I'm just tryin' to raise the ghosts up out of their graves.

I wanna go back to the Ashgrove
That's where I come from
Yeah I wanna go back to the Ashgrove
That's where I belong.

Well I can't say I been all sinner
Can't say I been all saint
I've done some good deeds and I've made big mistakes
I been in and out of love
Said words I regret
I been drunk, been sober
Smoked too many cigarettes
And I'm out on this highway travelin' town to town
And the news on the radio just brings me down
Intolerance and fear
Ignorance and lies
It's the same old same old I heard a million times
And I'm thinkin' of friends and lovers
And how they come and go
Like look-alike houses on the side of the road
Full of everyday people tryin' to get ahead
Tryin' to find a reason just to get out of bed
'Cause we all need somethin' just to get us through
Well I'm gonna play the blues tonight man
'Cause that's what I do.

I'm goin' back to the Ashgrove
That's where I come from
I'm goin' back to the Ashgrove
That's where I belong.

Randy California's (Spirit) uncle started the Ash Grove and it's where Spirit debuted.
I'll say it again.  Dave tours all the time, catch him while you can, he's an authentic original and he'll blast you right out of the hall. I was shocked at just how good he is on guitar when I saw him the first time.  He can stand up against anyone.  And he puts on one hell of a great show, tells stories, threads his way through his catalog, and you can just see that he loves every minute of it.

His brother Phil's pretty cool as well. After the Blasters split, he went to grad school to study mathematics and AI. He now has a PhD from UCLA.

Every time I see this, I wonder why he is singing that old Girl Scout round.
8 ==> 9

This tune rocks!

Great song, Vocals and guitar. Dude really nails it all. I feel the history.
Word is that Randy California's parents ran The Ashgrove in the 60's thus giving him a chance to play with Hendrix. Cool bit of obscure trivia.

Yeah!! He actually played "Harlan County Line", from his last album, "Eleven Eleven". Fabulous album, BTW.

Interesting. I thought it was David Baerwald on first listen.
Hey!! This is very nice!
I would like to hear more decent "bar-bands" here on RP.{#Yes}
Ho-hum.  Sounds like every other decent bar band.
Didn't he used to be in a band with his brother?  I first heard them in the 80s.

I hear Dave and Alvin and all I can think of are Chipmunks.
Think I saw him play on the FX show "Justified" recently.
Damn it if the characters didn't leave the bar before he could even finish his tune.

I've never smoked in my life and that's what I thought he was singing too. As a non-smoker, it wasn't making much sense.

Great song! {#Dancingbanana_2}

If Dave is playing anywhere near you, you should try to get to his shows. Really good shows.

No. The Blues will never end. They are an integral part of a life in self-reflection, a recapitulation of pain and sorrow, transmogrified into joy and a looking-forward attitude.

Dave is great solo, but if you can see him with his bandmates in The Knitters (Exene, John Doe, and D.J. Bonebreak from the band X) you are in for a show. I saw them at HSB 7, and they were phenominal. {#Wave}

This isn't even really blues.

Substitute "Radiohead" for "blues" and then you've got something.

Here is an excellent example.  Your number one motivation in making music has to be the love of the music. The world is chock full of wonderful, accomplished, excellent musicians that are not "famous."  I am amazed at his playing.

I love this song. I'm in Milwaukee sitting here at work listening to the rumble of Harley Davidsons go by on the street — all on their way to the 105th Anniversary celebration. This song is really fits the mood! {#Motor}

"Interstate City" is a great live recording that captures his energy.   "King of California" is a great recording that demonstrates his songwriting & musical skills.

Dave Alvin's nitty-gritty lyrics speak to me. I can relate to the experience portrayed in his songs.
Nice bit of blues rock, sung by a 20-cigarettes-a-day played-in-smoky-dives-all-my-life voice. Classic.
A favorite here in Austex as well as his native SoCal. Alvin alone or with los Blasters is just fine with me.
Killer groove. His version of Highway 61 is for the ages.
This is one of the few blues songs I like less after repeated plays... not sure why, maybe the lyrics just start sounding sillier than most.
As soon as I read, "...Combining the revved-up energy of punk rock with an enthusiastic embrace of classic American sounds; the Blasters became a sensation in Los Angeles and won an enthusiastic cult following across the United States and Europe..." I wondered if there was any connection to Dwight Yoakam, and sure enough there appears to be. I knew Dwight cut his teeth, so to speak, in LA where his self-proclaimed "psycobilly" sound was emerging as a blend of country and elements of punk. Long live the true, innovative musicians! Thanks for the background info.

That's just silly! And I don't like SRV or this song much either.
I saw Dave Alvin a year ago at a little dive club, we were like 20 feet from stage. A little tiny dance floor where you were so close you could reach out and touch him. He packed the dance floor on this tune and rocked the place. He was nervous at first in that little packed place, but he loosened up and seemed to have a great time.
Oh yeah, this has my foot tapping!

His newest album "West of the West" is great also. I didn't think I'd like a Dave Alvin album of covers, but he really pulls it off. Some excellent guitar work there, also.

IMO this is not one of Dave's best. His King of California disc is better but still even when he's below his peak, he's still better than a whole lotta other stuff out there. See him live and you'll be a fan for life.

If we all thought like this just because RP plays anything that even sounds remotely like someone we dislike (in my case, Neil Young, for example) tehy would have shut up shop a looooooong time ago.

Way to go, SmackDaddy. Educate.
You guys sound like you don't know who Dave Alvin is. Class is now in session: Dave Alvin helped to kick start the American roots rock scene in the early '80s with the band the Blasters and has since gone on to a career as a solo performer, songwriter, producer, and sideman that's been as well respected as it is eclectic. Born in Downey, CA, in 1955, Alvin was raised by a family of music fans, and as teenagers Dave and his older brother Phil immersed themselves in blues, rockabilly, and vintage country sounds, collecting rare records and attending nightclub performances by the likes of T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner, and Lee Allen. Like many fans, the Alvin brothers wanted to play music influenced by the sounds they loved, and in 1979 the formed the Blasters with fellow Downey residents Bill Bateman and John Bazz. Combining the revved-up energy of punk rock with an enthusiastic embrace of classic American sounds, the Blasters became a sensation in Los Angeles and won an enthusiastic cult following across the United States and Europe. However, the Blasters were unable to translate their critical respect and enthusiastic fan base into mainstream success, and in 1986, Dave left the band. Phil Alvin continued to front various lineups of The Blasters, and in 2002 Dave joined forces with Phil, Bill Bateman and John Bazz for a short series of Blasters reunion shows. While playing with the Blasters, Alvin had already displayed a broad range of enthusiasms with two side projects, Chris D.'s literate goth-punk collective the Flesh Eaters and the Knitters, an acoustic ensemble in which Alvin performed vintage country and folk numbers with John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X. Shortly after leaving the Blasters, Alvin joined X as lead guitarist after the departure of Billy Zoom; however, Alvin amicably left the group to work on a solo project shortly after the recording sessions for their album See How We Are. Alvin's first solo album, entitled Romeo's Escape in the United States and Every Night About This Time in England, added a purer country influence along with a larger side-portion of the blues; while the album was critically well received, it didn't fare well in the marketplace, and Alvin was dropped by his American record label, Columbia. Alvin suffered health problems which sidelined him for a while, except for a wild tour with friends Mojo Nixon and Country Dick Montana as the Pleasure Barons, which was described as "a Las Vegas revue from acts who aren't going to be asked to play Vegas." (A live album was released of a second Pleasure Barons tour in 1993.) In 1989, Dwight Yoakam scored a hit on the country charts with Alvin's song "Long White Cadillac," and Alvin used the royalties to start work on his second solo set, Blue Blvd. Released by the California-based roots-music label Hightone Records, Blue Blvd received enthusiastic reviews and sold well enough to re-establish Alvin as a significant artist in the roots rock scene. After releasing Museum of Heart in 1993, Alvin began to turn his attention to acoustic music with 1994's King of California, and over the next several years Alvin moved back and forth between hard-edged roots rock and more introspective acoustic material that still honored his influences (and allowed him to display a greater range as a vocalist). In 2000, Alvin recorded a collection of traditional folk and blues classics, Public Domain: Songs From the Wild Land, which earned him a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2004, Alvin signed with the upstart roots rock label Yep Roc Records, who released his album Ashgrove, a low-key but hard-edged set of blues and rock. When not busy recording his own music, Alvin has also worked as a producer for several other roots-oriented acts, including Tom Russell, the Derailers, and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, as well as collaborating with rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess. As a sideman, Alvin has recorded sessions with the likes of Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Little Milton, Katy Moffatt, and Syd Straw. I saw when he played with X when Billy Zoom left the band for awhile. The guy is one of the best guitarists ever.

While this is a "good" song - it's being played too much these days on RP. I think there are several artists that have a version getting airplay that may contribute to the overplay. Too much of a good thing...
