I would never normally go bowling
On a Friday morning in New Orleans
But I like to come here to remember
The kind of places you took me
Like the time we stole a Datsun
And drove all night to the Everglades
Until we crashed it in a big electric storm
And stood there listening to the bayou rain
The county sheriff had a harelip
Louisiana's pride and joy
He said politely as he cuffed me
"I never busted an English boy
But I will accept a contribution
To the Old Policemen's Charity Ball
But you better drive this dirty Datsun
Into the Gulf of Mexico"
Under a Cajun moon I lay me open
There is a spirit here that won't be broken
Some words are sad to sing
Some leave me tongue-tied
''(But the hardest thing to tell you)''
But the hardest words I know
Are I love you goodbye
I love you goodbye
Typhoon Pierre delayed my plane till morning ''(Jusqu'au matin)''
Let the bontemps rouler from your accordion ''(L'accordien)''
Under a cajun moon I lay me open ''(Y'a un esprit partout)''
There is a spirit here that won't be broken
''(Simple words are sad to sing)''
Some words are sad to sing
''(They leave me tongue-tied)''
Some leave you tongue-tied
''(But the hardest thing to tell you my friend)''
The hardest words I know
''(Is I love you goodbye)''
I love you goodbye
''(Je t'aime, au revoir)''
I love you goodbye
''(Je t'aime, toujours)''
I love you, goodbye

Bought this song on the original CD at the dollar store for a dollar. Among the surprises on it, are the guests including Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Eddie Van Halen
Should stick with "Blinded Me With Science"......
I could have this on "Repeat" & listen to it a dozen times!
I love you- Good bye
I love you- Good bye
Such an eclectic mix of sounds, noises, voices, tempos...it all adds up to a really good song in my opinion, from a pioneer in the electronic music genre.

That's who I was trying to think off. The piano at the beginning.
This isn't bad, but it's not 'Blinded Me'...
It does sound a lot like Bruce Hornsby, but it's even closer to the theme song from Baywatch ("I'm Always Here"). Toward the end of this song are a couple of bars that are almost identical. No idea who was first.

Love Thomas Dolby! Thanks for playing such great music
This resembles that song by Midnight Oil. I forget the title, clue me in, it's about the native peoples. Beds are Burning? The Dead Heart? Can't pin the melody in my head, but Dolby is a clear descendant.
Love this song — just had this CD out — it's great driving music!

It's the disjointedness that catches my ear and interest. I like the mix of sampled sounds, including gourd and thunderstorm. A nice little touch of Irish in it, too.
I like some TD, but this is really disjointed, nothing really gels for me.

One of my all time favorite songs! Love Radio Paradise, thanks for playing the best music.

Heard that too.
That bass line is a bit reminiscent of 'Thriller" by MJ.

Wow, I love this song and am so glad to hear something different on RP.
I don't think I've heard this but maybe once here.

Like the time we stole a Datsun and drove all night to the everglades
I guess Thomas couldn't pronounce "Atchafalaya."

Nice. I like the mixture of the sounds.
There's some nice stuff happening in this piece—the fiddle, piano and harmonies—but some of the sound effects do grate on my ears.
LOVin' this. Bouncing to the bass line, wriggling to the celtic instruments and singing to the chorus. I never heard this before and I gotta get it. Thanks RP for broadening and exciting my music experience!!!
Did I hear an electric fiddle? Now that is Thomas Dolby for you..ha.
...this is pretty cool...
Never heard this song before, not bad! What IS bad, however, is when I see his name "She Blinded Me With Science" gets stuck in my head.

yup, I can hear that a bit. And, as noted below, "I Want it That Way" (which is a hugely underrated pop song).
But this has such a great, summer-evening groove. What a rich, lushly-textured production.
Sounds like Beatles Elenor Rigby

The original album that this song came from is stellar. Don't buy the retrospective - buy the original (Astronauts and Heretics). Some really nice songs on there. Amazon has it used for three bucks! Be sure to click from RP!
When I first heard this—the piano and drum combination especially—I thought, "Bruce Hornsby with John Molo on drums, but a vocalist I don't recognize..."
Sounds like Beatles Elenor Rigby
Recently rediscovered this disc! TD is a really talented guy ... Really brightens up a gloomy spring day!
I should add this to my wish list. So many great songs on this album.

One of my least favorite Dolby tunes, maybe because I'm from Louisiana. The whole Aliens ate my Buick recording is amazing, produced in part by George Clinton. As funky as anything you might want to hear.
Yes! I remember when this album came out. I was living in Lafayette, LA at the time and was struck by the lyrics referencing Opelousas, Louisiana police and the faint Cajun fiddle during the break. Thomas Dolby "blinded me" with a really good song in "I Love You Goodbye."
He released some beautiful and classy tracks on par with this song during his 'Science' and 'Hyperactive' days, but they didn't get airplay, at least in North America as far as I know. Check out 'The Flat Earth' and 'Screen Kiss', in particular, from The Flat Earth CD. Also, 'Budapest By Blimp' is very good - I think that was on the Aliens Ate My Buick recording (?)

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to say that this is actually pretty damn decent. Are we sure this is the same "blinded me with science" guy?
EDIT: I'd rate the song higher than 5, but the bassline is a blatant Thriller ripoff.

This whole CD has a cool summer day vibe to it.

I like this song, but does anyone else think the melody for the line "I love you goodbye" sound a lot like the melody for Backstreet Boys' "I want it that way"? Or rather vice-versa since this song came first.
That's exactly what popped into my head...a boyband tune! Musically a fine song, perhaps a tad before it's time, much like TD's other work. Worth hearing again.

Celtic instrumentation, some weird-ass chorus over top of a michael jackson bassline and what sounds like bruce hornsby on a casio piano keyboard .. I can think of much better things I have heard in my life.
Yeah, it's quite underwhelming.

The Flat Earth was an absolutely brilliant CD. I kept waiting for him to do something in the same league as that again, but he never came close. This song is one of the disappointing ones.

I so love this song. And all of "Astronauts and Heretics", for that matter.

Wow, never thought I'd hear this tune on RP, so I didn't even try to upload it. Color me surprised. Maybe I'll try for "Europa II" (Eastern Bloc)...maybe not. "Silk Pajamas" would be fun just to listen to people claim "Squeeze ripoff."
A most excellent tune from a most excellent album.
What Roverfish said. Exactly. Silk Pajamas.
Excellent! Old, obscure Thomas Dolby!!!

Really?! I heard boating. I think boating works better. I agree, this is the best song on a very good album. "Astronauts and Heroes" may be his best. Glad to hear this on RP.
I'm pretty sure it's "bowling" and the lyric sites agree. But whatever works for you
And Pyro, I definitley agree about the Hornsby-esque piano. It occurred to me after I posted that Bruce could have done the song.

don't know about the vocal, but i was diggin' the violin jam ...
Wow, I love TD, but have never heard this song! What a nice combination of sounds...a little Bruce Hornsby sound on piano, some cajun accordian, and of course, the signature Dolby sound.
Most cool.
This is right up there with Kenny G's "Born on the Bayou"
The best from "Astronauts and Heretics". More Thomas Dolby would be cool.

A GREAT song! And strangely prophetic:
"I wouldn't normally go boating on Friday morning in New Orleans." I listened to this a LOT last fall.
One my favorite TD songs, totally overlooked by commercial radio. The kind of song Radio Paradise always manages to find for me!
An 80s song I actually really like.
I love this song. So sweet, so sad...
Funny, I have always loved having Dolby cranked up when I am driving, seems to work well with passing the time enjoyably, just sort of fits. Roxy Music is on high my driving music list as well, which I guess kind of makes sense....
