Back in the late 70s I moved from NC to Detroit for a job (and a girl) and tried living up North for a while. One morning at 2 a.m. I was driving home from work in a cold rain and Ray Charles came on the radio. There was just something about his voice that said "Go home, boy."

So I packed up two days later. Thanks, Ray.

I wonder, did you leave the girl behind, leave her for Ray and home or was it a threesome, you, her and Ray?

I Agree Completely!!   Thanx RP!

Yeah, I was thinking there was a bit of a Monk influence in his playing, on this tune anyway.
I love Ray and when Bill plays this cut I have to say, "Ray Charles"? So Funky!
hey...hear that Monk?
Fuckin’ brilliance. Listening here on a chilly night in Georgia. Rock on Ray!
Love me some smooth sax.
Oh man! Perfection.
Ray rocks on forever, immortal!

LOVE that this song is named "Rockhouse," but that was 1959, I suppose.

As a motorbiker, the Rock House on CA 70 near Paradise is a top 3 bucket list item.

Sadly, the Rock House burned down (but not the rock walls) in the Camp Fire. There's an on-line fundraiser  for the owners, which also has more information and pictures -

Amen.
I keep picturing Marty McFly. {#Bananajam}
My my mother, god rest her soul.  Was an uneducated hillbilly from the backwoods of KY.  Didn't read much or never went anywhere.  But she demanded that my father take her to see Elvis (he did)  and there were Ray Charles  8 track tapes scattered all over  the floorboard of our faux woody station wagon.

Most excellent.
{#Bananapiano}perfect.

Great to hear again !
I was going to say, on this jazzy-soul groove, can we get some '70s Yousou N'dour funky latin-inspired afro-beat? And lo and behold y'all went to Fela Kuti. Could keep it up with the N'Dour, and/or go to some Dengue Fever, maybe?

I saw a great concert years ago, I think it was Bruce Hornsby, he used this tune as his intro music as the whole band came on stage.
10, 10 ,10 - keep 'em coming
The bass line from Van, to Ray, is completely seamless. Nice work Bill!

I like the smokey-jazz vibe playing this morning...

Getting expensive as I keep buying CDs... But the music is great and will last...

Thanks

It has happened again - different class, same song, same reaction. Great groove for a rainy Oregon Friday.

Shit, this is good.

Ray's Rockhouse, great song, Manhattan Transfer did a great version of this

Srsly, indeed. Listen to his left hand. He's like Jerry Lee Lewis - he could lay down a killer backbeat.

Volume level of this track is loud!
well.. maybe is just my imagination or a problem in my Amarok

Not Ray's smoothest number, but Ray on a bad day is better than most others on a good day. How about some of his other tunes?

Agreed. Everyone talks about his voice so much they've forgotten he could really play the thing.
Smiley tune! Guaranteed to make your feet tap, like most of Ray's work. The man was a demi-god!
EVERYBODY BUNNY HOP!
Smoooooth! Thanks RP!

Better get off the piano or someone will see you sticking up over the wall...
i didn't catch where this went from a part 1 into a part 2. need to hear again, please. ;)

Wow!! Probably my highest rated Ray Charles tune - some parts actually remind me a little of Dave Brubeck styling.

More of this.
Sweet. Kinda feel like swayin' and strollin'.
After two songs that dragged me down in the sinking swirling eddy of despair, Bill has lowerd a bucket into the depths of my well and rasied me back to light with Ray. OK, well maybe not that drastic, but Ray brings some good feelings with his music.

Ah - gawd. This is bringing flashbacks to high school where we sang this song in choir. Not nearly as cool as this.
