I'm in love with the world
through the eyes of a girl
who's still around
the morning after.

We broke up a month ago
and I grew up; I didn't know
I'd be around
the morning after.

It's always been "Wait and see,"
a happy day and then you pay
and feel like shit
the morning after.

But now I feel changed around,
and, instead of falling down,
I'm standing up
the morning after.

Situations get fucked up
and turned around
sooner or later.

I could be another fool
or an exception to the rule,
you tell me
the morning after.

Crooked spin can't come to rest.
I'm damaged, bad at best.
She'll decide
what she wants.

I'll probably be the last to know.
No one says until it shows.
See how it is...

They want you
or they don't.
Say yes.

I'm in love with the world
through the eyes of a girl
who's still around
the morning after.

Elliott Smith - Say Yes, From "Either/Or" (1997). "the men who are here forever seem to be here the least."  dannyofthededd

Did he just say the F word? I'm telling mom...

A bit over-stated, no?
Nice!

As a faithful follower and occasional supporter of RR, I am disappointed that a song is aired featuring vulgarity, especially the F-word. Yeah I'm old, but let Rap corner the market on that type dialogue. I cringe even when I hear it on the original "Working Class Hero", and I love that song. Bill, I love the music you play; I hear and subsequently purchase much of what I wouldn't hear through any other medium. I respectfully request that music featuring hard-core profanity be deleted or at least censored, as some i-tune purchases have been made available.

I'm so offended by this quote I can scarcely think clearly.  There are so many things *wrong* with this that its impossible to point them all out.  Practically every sentence is blasphemy.
  • As already pointed out... one month membership hardly qualifies as faithful follower (unless you have ADD).
  • I don't think "vulgarity" means what you think it means.
  • The "F-word" is just a word.  Its expresses certain ideas and emotions just like other words.
  • For somebody who says they love Working Class Hero, you cannot seem to actually connect with the working man.
  • Censorship is evil.  Pure evil.  I'd rather have dinner with a murderer than somebody who advocates censorship.
Grrr.

RR? who is RR? eh, never mind.

Man, that thing is insidious.  I hate it when a disembodied non-conscious decision-making entity tells me what music i will like based on what it thinks "sounds like" what I just said i liked.  If that makes sense.

Um, that would be known as The Elliott Smith Channel, located elsewhere on your Internet dial.

We already get too much a dosage of ES herein, thanks just the same.

F-words aside, I love the little guitar thingy halfway through the song (situations get f**d up...)  Makes the song for me :)

Like so many others, I discovered Elliott a bit too late.  Would have given a non-essential limb (well..) to see him be a little uncomfortable but still magnificent on a stage somewhere.
It's great to have a soft side, but man there's got to be something to set it off, otherwise you're just talking a big puddle of pap aren't you? Just saying you "feel like shit" doesn't cut it either. Put simply: This song is weak.

Oh look, it's followed by some REM! Looks like things are turning around </sarcasm>

This would be so awesome if I were 13. Somehow reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel, F-bomb notwithstanding.

Yeah, the F-bomb put me off. Giving it a 6 with no possibility of parole.

I echo that sentiment.  I wonder if 30 or 40 years from now he'll be rediscovered like Nick Drake.

Ahh - Elliott is one of those acquired tastes. Fortunately for many, he's an easily acquired taste.
Isn't that just contradicting yourself?

you are the first person I have ever noticed that made that remark. Same here my friend. Melody and music is what catches me and if the lyrics turn out to be good later I'm happy. Lyrics fall into the "bonus" category to me. If I am reading a book I tend to be pretty vigilant about word choices but as far as songs go I'm pretty forgiving. There are a few songs that I have loved for years without ever reading the lyrics, which I suppose is irresponsible of me but oh well
makes three of us! It is music, after all.

and RP would have a happy listening audience of one.

how 'bout the good ole "f" word
I always listen to melody over lyrics... I do eventually get around to the lyrics... but melody hits me first.

That's Eliott Smith for ya ........ wouldn't have it any other way.

Elliott Smith probably isn't for you, then.

If that's what it takes to make you happy, I have a simple remedy : Go out to your local music shop, buy all his albums, rip them to your favorite listening device and happily listen away. It certainly worked for me. Elliot is great. But variety is essential for a rich diverse musician or lover of music. Try to mix a little Nick Drake in for comparative measure.
I'm thinking Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) has listened to his share of Elliott Smith.
no
Just play his entire catalogue, over and over, and I'll be a happy guy
I always listen to melody over lyrics... I do eventually get around to the lyrics... but melody hits me first. All of Elliott's songs hit me over the head with the melody then promptly present me with lyrics, demanding my attention. Nice day today.
I am soooo happy Bill is playing more Elliot! The more the better IMHO.
ahhhhhhhhh hey, my heart didn't get posted :( there's supposed to be a heart after the first line.

they want you, or they don't say "yes."
I'm digging more & more of his work - posthumously, unfortunately.
Wish he were still on this earth. No one quite like him.
