Sorrow found me when I was young
Sorrow waited, sorrow won
Sorrow, they put me on the pill
It's in my honey, it's in my milk
Don't leave my hyper heart alone on the water
Cover me in rag and bone sympathy
'Cause I don't want to get over you
I don't want to get over you
Sorrow's my body on the waves
Sorrow's a girl inside my cake
I live in a city sorrow built
It's in my honey, it's in my milk
Don't leave my hyper heart alone on the water
Cover me in rag and bone sympathy
'Cause I don't want to get over you
I don't want to get over you
Don't leave my hyper heart alone on the water
Cover me in rag and bone sympathy

This album was a beautiful soundtrack to wandering the streets of Madrid for the first time and alone (on a cold February day). It stirs my heart still.

I don't care what so many others say about The National. I really like them. Yes, of course, if they were only band I listened to, I'd probably kill myself in a week. But they aren't, so I won't. I'm just happy when they slip into the rotation once in a while. Sometimes they fit a mood perfectly.

Eeew. That cringey.

I must be a National hater, I find this morose and wrist slashing, as I do every one of their songs. About the only time I hit PSD.
How can this be great to listen to.....crikey :(

The National is like Kraft Dinner...You know what you are getting, plain but good.

normally i really don't like the simple two chorus repetition style of song writing, but for some reason i real like the sound and feel of this song.

The voice is an instrument. The clarity of intonation is pretty low on my list of criteria as to whether I like the sound. Obviously it's all subjective, so there's no right or wrong, but your criticism reminds me of someone saying that Neil Young's guitar on Cinnamon Girl isn't clear and crisp enough. It's either got a nice tone, or it doesn't. Mumbling has little to do with it, IMO.

Glad they could do it for you. I want a live review of The National yes, it's like watching someone going crazy and killing himself slowly. haunting, voyeuristic and beautiful.

The National has added sopranos to their choir, an addition that lifts the weight of this song. Good.

Sounds like one of those androgynous bands from the 70's and 80's, like Roxy Music or something. In fact I keep waiting for the line "Avalon" to break out.

Good voice, but why they don't use few more notes, as someone there said already? 5.
I'm going to play this album after xmas dinner, so everyone gets depressed and leaves. don't want the company hanging around too long.

Why is it that every time I hear a song by The National, I think it's someone else? Knee-jerk reaction, I guess. Still, I love this song - guess maybe I just don't want to attribute huge kudos to this group because I'd never heard them before RP. So - shucking my pre-conceived prejudices, I'm forced to acknowledge that I really, really like this group. Damn - I hate it when that happens...
