When I was studying Chemistry at secondary (high, to youse across the Pond) school, I distinctly remember that we produced metallic mercury from cinnabar (Mercury sulphide) and played with droplets of the stuff in our hands. Oh, how innocent and ignorant we were. Didn't do me any harm, of course (gibber, dribble, drool...)
Ah! Now, the world's right! David 's back on RP! Haven't heard this song in over a year - since the last time I commented on it! Still a solid 8!
Mad as a hatter about that mercury
clever
Fin-tastic!
Ah, David Lindley - one of my heros.
I'm sure I'm not the only person who remembers his mid-70s habit of blowing into town, going to a pawn shop and buying some $25 guitar, then playing it that night at the show. The man is a genius, even with some cheap junk.
I'm seriously happy I got to see some of his early shows with Jackson Browne - the very epitome of 70s singer-songwriter excellence.

Flippin' Fantastic!!! You played David Lindley! Not only that, but a DL song that I've not heard before, although he does take his liberties with references to his own earlier recording of Mercury Blues ("Crazy 'bout a Mercury, cruisin' on down the road"), though, that's not the mercury he's referring to here. Always enjoyed the man's sense of playfulness!
Also Blues, but what a difference to Stevie!
I agree with the lyrics' message!
Definitely quirky, Bill.
Definitely quirky, Bill.
Like the snap to this...
You should see Dave's collection of stringed instruments. His slide work on this piece is on a 1965 Sears and Roebuck "Ten Buck Special" guitar.
Cool ! My iTunes pulled this up earlier today, too. Not sure what that means.

My brother had a '49 Merc, and I LOVED that car! It wasn't sporty or pretty, but it had bench seats and would haul at least six kids to school. And it had a pretty good-sized engine under the hood, so whenever someone's high-zoot little "pretty" car wouldn't start on cold winter days or got stuck in a snowdrift, my brother was the person they called to give them a jump-start or yank them out of the ditch.
Maybe that's why I love this song so much...

I have so many references for this song... "Mercury Blues" by Steve Miller Band, for one. I'm still looking, but holy cow - David Lindley taps into so many sources, he's pretty hard to pigeonhole. This is a really funny, fun, wickedly-snarky song. I love it. Thank you to whoever submitted it - kudos to you!

Unexpected.
I guess every once in a while we needed to be reminded just how weird Dave is.
He has been capable of flashes of extremely brilliant musicianship.
Not sure that the mercury in Dave's brain is his biggest problem. Can the mercury even get past all those other chemicals?

A riot!! The last 10 seconds was a nice bonus
Love me some Mr. Dave...
Funny. But not, in a way.
Wish Bill would find old tunes like "Your Old Lady" from Lindley & El Rayo-X.
Funny how it only takes a couple notes from his guitar and you know exactly who it is. What a nut. A talented nut.
me like this.
so that's what it is !
Howzz about Pete Seeger meets Rye Cooder,..err... the Mad Hatter meets Jonah ?
Wasn't crazy about it either...
