Broken people get recycled
And I hope that I will.
Sometimes we're thrown off our pathways
What I thought was my way home
Wasn't the place I know
I'm certain nothing's certain
What we own becomes our prison
My possessions will be gone
Back to where they came from

Blame, no one is to blame
As natural as the rain that falls
Here comes the Flood again

See the rock that you hold onto
Is it gonna save you
When the earth begins to crumble?
Why d'you feel you have to hold on?
Imagine if you let go

Blame, no one is to blame
As natural as the rain that falls
Here comes the Flood again

Wash away the weight that pulls you down
Ride the waves that free you from the dusk?

Don't trust your eyes
Its easy to believe them
Know in your heart
That you can leave your prison

Don't trust your mind
It's not always listening
Turn on the lights
And feel the ancient rhythm

Don't trust your eyes
Its easy to believe them
Know in your heart
That you can leave your prison

Blame, no one is to blame
As natural as the rain that falls
Here comes the Flood again

“Don’t trust your mind, it’s not always listening” 😊💯
Before, when I heard this, I was keenly focused on her incredible voice and the lovely, interesting arrangement in this. But today I had time and circumstance to check out the lyrics. Whoah! Pretty frickin' awesome...full of essential, healing wisdom beyond her years! I hope to always appreciate new ways of seeing the real truth!
Okay, this got me to sit up and pay attention.
Love her voice. She's amazing...
Another thing this song has in common with Goldfrapp is the John Barry hooks. I can certainly imagine this as a Bond theme song in the Roger Moore era.
Love her vocals.  Very nice.

I thought it was them until I looked at the details.
Good one this, I was surprised when it came out. Nine Million Wombles it is not.

In all fairness, the cover has a lot to do with the packaging/marketing process. Most of the time the process has nothing to do with the artist. Making a comment on the cover is highly justified and yes, I have seen so many artists (mainly women) that are subject to record companies that push the artist's sexuality. Once it gets to 'raunchy' it seems to go past the music and sells on image.

Remember Alice Cooper and his big secret back when he was into the darkness and demon-like persona? He had to sneak out for a game of golf every city he toured... ;-)
love this - new to my ears or perhaps 2nd time here
What a beautiful song!
Waiting on Hurricane Ian here in Florida, this seems appropriate. Wonderful, powerful song.
Yep, like others I was convinced I was hearing early Metric at first.

The bridge is well done.  Great song.
GREAT!! I never heard of her, prior to RP. The more I hear this, the more I like it! Thank You RP! ...Please play more of her tunes!!
GREAT VOICE!!!

Katie's very interesting, agree. The show-tune aspect works for me. My favourite song of hers is "Shy Boy", a cute song from a girl's/woman's perspective about a boy she hopes would stop to talk to her -- a decent hit for her everywhere except North America, lol.

Her Georgian background probably informs some of her sensibility as a song-writer/performer. Very curious and interesting singer.
I am always surprised by the intensity, clarity, and musical brilliance that she achieves here, especially that incredible part in the middle!

Bumped from 7 >8 for the porn guitar.
Edit: '70's porn guitar.

Album cover doesn't do her beauty justice.  Glancing through other pictures on Google, she is incredibly beautiful, she seems to have avoided the pop-whore formula with tons of glitter and always being half naked.

Who cares what she looks like?  It's the music that matters, isn't it?

Bill, if Katie lives in UK, it doesn't mean that Georgia was a member of UK!

If you are confused, the UK is the 'United Kingdoms' which is Scotland, Wales & England ( with a bit of Ireland) - Britain is an island, which has the same stuff (not Ireland - that's another island). I am English but my french daughter is British (seriously, you can't invent this!) - she was born in England, I was born in Germany ...

Not to divert from her songwriting, but I have to say that that wikipedia picture should be used as the all encompassing definition of the word "Cute."
Ease off the melodrama, please.
This song is like a melting marshmellow mood on a mighty mushroom meadow

I had the incredible chance to assist to her first concert in Barcelona, in 2010, at the (rather small but incredibly sounding) Palau de la Música. What a great concert!

I've always loved the way the rhythm changes in this song, always been enchanted by the sexy way she can sing so delectably here...
Just me, a fussy Scot, clarifying that Katie Melua isn't Scottish! She's Georgian born but raised in Nor'n Ireland/ England.
Very nice.  Goldfrappesque.
Wow Bill is fulfilling on Christmas Listeners wishes! {#High-five}
Simply wonderful!
Katie every time - without much thinking either...

How about this choice U2 or Katie?  UMMMM U2 or Katie?
Yeah no question.
The "Annie Haslam" school of delivery.

Was bumping it 5 to 7 and then it had that sloppy change and reminded me why I gave it 5 last time.  She has some amazing songs but in my view this isn't one of them.  Always a nice voice though.

Oh, lovely! Finally Katie Melua on Radio Paradise. Saw her 2010 in Barcelona, a wonderful concert! Thank you Bill!
Amazing...
Upload of some Deep Purple gets a sorry but Katie Melua crap gets into rotation. Not my choice.

About Celine: I don't like her music but she is a great singer. I might well prefer the lesser known songs from Celine Dion above Katie Melua.

 Funny ... was just about to post a comment saying exactly the same! {#High-five}

This song goes through a new musical style about every 30 seconds. The vocalist is fine, the song sucks.
this album was William Orbit, hence the drama.    her other albums prior to this were co written and produced by Mike Batt on his label.     womble anyone?

I like this, its brave enough to completely change direction then back again.   8
wasn't this produced by William Orbit? {#Boohoo}
breathless bedroom whispering, lots of reverb, ......

I dunno....
So boring ... don't like her at all. Everything she sings sounds the same.
Unfortunately no PSD button on my device ...
Interesting to find out that she's married to James Toseland, a successful British motorcycle racer of which I followed before his retirement.  The two must have music in common.  James is an pretty accomplished pianist as well.
I thought that it was Edie Brickell.  I was sure of it!  Oh well, my bad...  That's not a bad thing by the way....
The sound engineer had the reverb turned 'way too far up.

Well noted. Reminded me a little of Shirley Bassey when the song started. Something about the scoring feels a bit cliched and the lyrics are shopworn. But she has a nice voice and will likely do better stuff.

Edit: read more RP comments. Katie's closer to Petula Clark's voice than Shirley's. The vibrato in her singing sounds a bit overdubbed, but my left ear is really shot.

(And wow, she's a babe).
I think she knocks this out of the park. Every time I hear it on my headphones I have to stop and look to see who this fab singer is!

I especially like it when it when the tempo picks up.

Just love her voice but my favourite track is still, (on her first (2004) album "Call off the Search), "The closest thing to crazy" - which B&R have rejected along with 20 odd others! {#Rolleyes}

There are a lot of people here that do not like this girl. But I do....One must be versatile.....:)

Yes, a real piece of collection. Good demonstration of true turntable for vinyl records, with direct and raw sound, very different from the best cd-player, with the box made of wood, which prevents the resonance out. Also appreciated the fact that the mark by the manufacturer is hidden of the appliance, avoiding free advertising. I am an enthusiast of these pearls, and i also own a one, diamond needle, but probably not as sophisticated.

Problem with 78 rpm discs is the amount of recording time.  You can achieve pretty high quality and a lengthy play time if you went to a 12" or 16" one sided disc.  The 45 rpm discs for single play were pretty close to as hi fi as you could get.  OTH, if you have any of the mid-1950's "Master-Phonics" 78rpm discs, they are pretty good quality.  Those old radio broadcast 16 rpm discs were "transcription discs" and were not made for actual sound quality.  Higher speeds and media tracks which are wide equates to bandwidth.  At one time there was a scheme to record music on Betamax or VHS tapes where the helical scan head flew past at present day DAT speeds.  Recording wide bandwidth analog sound is actually fairly difficult, not because of the equipment electronics but the media bandwidth.

...ah, good point: i hadn't considered play times at all; my old 78s are all classical organ pieces which don't need the long-play format...i remembre dabbling with helical-scan hi-fi VHS in the late eighties and early nineties, back when sony was doing everything they could to cripple consumer DAT as a project-studio medium and personal computers hadn't yet attained performance suitable to real-time multi-track recording...toward the end of that period, i actually contemplated re-purposing laserdisc video tracks for higher-definition wide-bandwidth analog audio, but thank goodness ubiquitous nyquist-limited digital audio recording finally overcame that stranglehold...

...the world would be a very different place today if music production had remained the purview of major-label oligopoly...

Cool video, if you are into scantily dressed, well cut dudes dancing around with staffs.

Of course, Katie looks hot too, so guys do have some reason to watch the video other than the good music.

This isn't her best song that I've heard (her cover of Kosmic Blues is freaking fantastic), but it's a very good one.
Yup, and love it... 9

Now I see my mistake. Beautiful turntable and great choice of records! This was nearing the record-CD transition, so I think you were smart/lucky to have gotten this in the day. It's grown on me, made it to a "10" and in my Radio Paradise Favorites playlist now. But not the same as having original vinyl. :-)

After watching a couple of her videos, I'm liking her music more and more. She works well in the multi-media format of music, lyrics, vocals and video. One more artist to add to my collection of "music I want to buy when I win the lottery." Bumping this one to a 9.
Best thing I've ever heard from her. Generally I have found her work to be pretty banal and dull mainstream pap, but this is really quite interesting, with a very accomplished and appealing vocal which has quite a lot of character in it.
