Time's gone by
Calendar leaves and snows fly
I might write a poem
If I could think of the words to try
What is there to remember
The winter was December
Just one more year left behind.

She never looked around to see me
She never looked around at all
All I saw was shadows on the wall
She never looked around to see me
She never looked around at all
All I heard was snow that had to fall.

She left in the morning
Quietly that was her way
And on returning
To find I had nothing to say
What is there to remember
The winter was December
Just one more year left behind.

She never looked around to see me
She never looked around at all
All I saw was shadows on the wall
She never looked around to see me
She never looked around at all
All I heard was snow that had to fall...

Well done, sounds like Emerson Lake Palmer material.  I wonder if that's a real Mellotron or a synthesized one.

YES!!
Listen to John Martyn's earlier stuff on acoustic guitar, like Bless The Weather; Head and Heart; and Solid Air. A brilliant songwriter.
Good Tune!!  I never heard it before. Beck is hit or miss for me. This tune is a HIT! Some of his tunes are clunkers.  Thanx RP!

Beck is a really accomplished arranger and adopter of varied influences.  That's a good thing.

Wow.

Moody Blues.
I was thinking literally a minute ago how much I'd love to hear this beautiful song. RP, this isn't the first time you've read my mind. Thank you.
Moody Blues
anyone?
8 --> 9
I can't remember when it was, but I saw John Matyn in a video and I wished I had heard him earlier. Beck covers this fantastically...
Beck keeps surprising me, he certainly is varied in his styles.
I'm not sure I've ever heard the original, so I can't compare, but I very much enjoy Beck's version.
Awww man. How long has Stinray been gone from here by now? 5 years? Sorely missed by so many.  Guess he like tested off of the meter vibe-reader thingee and got taken on the HR L-Ron to nirvana. Or Hell. Happy trails wherever you are posting Scientology alerts, Stinray. May the wind be always at your back. And face.

I miss his posts too. I hardly ever agreed with his STRONG opinions but they were good fun to read.

Maybe he's been converted; apparently he had been hanging around with Kirstie Alley.

Great cover. Love it to death. When I do it, I cover Beck, not JM.

JM was a great artist, great songwriter. Singer?

Not so much....

Every time I hear it, I want to edit out the Liberace piano solo....
So-so cover. Thanks for reminding me to look out the original JM version, now that's a 9-10!

It appears he hasn't touched that key in years.
Good album. Exemplifies what I was ranting about with Neil Young.

Here we have an uneven artist. And different artists showing how they would play the song. Still a John Martyn song, but it is different.

I really enjoy some of his music and don't think he could be bettered by anyone else. He should be studied in a college course.

Thanks for introducing me to him.

It has a Beta Band feel. Not a bad thing. With regard to the Scientology thing, I have thought about it. How can you hold his religion against him, it's rather presumptuous. Would you hold addiction megalomania and mysogeny against Eric Clapton, Keith Richard, Elvis, Keith Moon, Picasso etc. etc.

Shouldn't it be about the music and the talent.

Oh I was to late to warn for the upcoming rant. Sorry folks.
BEWARE SCIENTOLOGIST!
Beck should only sing John Martyn covers from now on.  This is way better than the crap he has been coming up with lately.
Somehow, this song always reminded me of the classic "I in the Sky" (well, a Sesame Street classic, anyway).
Deep and thoughtful rendition of a profound and moving song...Beck has made another selfless major contribution with this one.
a stunning nod to the original with just a hint of polish!  beautiful song cast for a beautiful man.

Really likin' these Beck songs Bill plays.              {#Bananajam}

Yes, doesn't he though!
I think this is a great track, and Beck really seems to channel Martyn on it. Somehow he makes his voice sound like him too. I imagine it's intentional, but it works.

I am watching Sandy right now.  Sposed to get a lot worse.  Not bad right now.  They call it "Frankenstorm" here on the coast.  Gov shut down today.  Working from home. Thanks for the hurricane set, Bill.

Beautiful vocals...I'm rather enjoying this!
The whole tribute album is excellent.  Thanks RP for introducing me to the album and to John Martyn.
Like an aged whiskey...this is a beaut.
Long time listener of John, this rendition chilled me to the bone, bravo Beck.
This has gone from 7 to 8 very quickly.  I'm intrigued to hear the original.
Very good stuff.
Every time I hear this it makes me pay attention; I like it more and more at each listening, too!
this song has crept up on me - like it a lot and especially with Beck's voice

Seconded. Anyway, a cult's a cult, whether 'established' or not. Plus the godsquad sure have produced some damn fine music over the decades, indeed centuries.
I hear a Moody Blues vibe here.  Maybe its that mellotron.

Thank you!   Exactly what I wanted to know.
Beck meets Martyn and the result predictably is very cool

This song is fantastic. Who should get the credit? John Martyn? Beck? I suppose both.

Good cover. Can we please leave the religious discussion out of this? Please?

Yes, I myself, always make a point of keeping an artist's personal life and their music separate.  I would like to hear John Martyn's version of this piece, but this is a very nice cover, and I like a lot of what I hear from Beck.  This song seems almost to have been made for him.

Good cover. Can we please leave the religious discussion out of this? Please?
Beck being a Scientologist doesn't bother me as much as Beck borrowing liberally from Nick Drake on this track bothers me. Scientology is really less of a religion than an organisation that provides anonymity and runs protection for it's celebrity followers. There's an excellent piece in The New Yorker that came out last winter outlining all of this.

Wacky beliefs is not a reason as others have posted.

I'd be more concerned with how they abuse their members:

So I definitely don't agree with his religious views, but no one has ever asked me to.  I do enjoy his music, though.

(Has there been a new law enacted that requires us to agree with the religious views of the artists whose music we enjoy?)

A lot of other artists played on RP are CHRISTIANS!!!
(those who believe the world and everything in it was created during a 7 day period that occurred 6 THOUSAND years ago)

point?

Hmmm, reminds me of solo Justin Hayward of the Moodies - the Blue Jays project??  Pretty nice!

THEN GO LISTEN TO IT !!!!!
Had to have a look because it reminded me of Nick Drake (the Bryter Layter period, to be more precise). Than I saw the artist's name. And the title, which evokes Michael Moorcock to me, and of course BÖC.

And then I saw it's all meant as a tribute to John Martyn.

Man!

Edit: Long live RP!

I love old John Martyn and I usually like Beck, but I'm not sure about this one. Still, I'm curious about this tribute album to an overlooked musician.

funny how anything Beck does just *grabs* you. I was casually not listening when this song came on.
I am listening now..
good. v good.
