Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder
And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It's death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder
And the calf that you carve with a smile
It is murder
And the turkey you festively slice
It is murder
Do you know how animals die?
Kitchen aromas aren't very homely
It's not comforting, cheery or kind
It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench of murder
It's not natural, normal or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour of murder
No No No - It is Murder
No No No - It is Murder
And who hears when animals cry?
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder
And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind

I was a veggie back in those days, when vegetarianism was pretty much mandatory amongst radical activists, but even then this song really got on my tits for its juvenile and pious moralism. If "death for no reason is murder", then that makes anyone who eats animals an accessory to murder, in which case they are the lowest of the moral low and deserve to suffer violence or even death, as the more extreme animal rightists advocated. I could never accept that Joe and Jane Public who eat burgers are the moral equivalent of the Boston Strangler, and from my experience amongst the more moralistic veggies it was clear that the high-minded moral condemnation was pretty much a power trip. If you make someone feel guilty, particularly of such a vile crime as murder, then you put yourself above them and can decide their penance and fate. As someone who grew up in Catholic Ireland where the clergy ruled through guilt and fear I knew that sort of moralism very, very well, and knew what it was for and where it led to.
Yet however morally high you are, there's always someone more morally pure (or less impure) than you. Lacto-veggies are still held complicit in animal suffering and death by Vegans, and Vegans are looked at askance by Fruitarians. Moralism doesn't recognise the bleedin' obvious fact that humans are messy, inconsistent, impure and often immoral creatures.

A silly song with silly lyrics!
Oddly it makes me crave a cheese burger.
How to piss off a hipster --->
this is awful :-(
papa don´t preach!
papa don´t preach!
oh FFS, RP was only on as background music, not some depressing pseudo political propaganda.
Ill try a PSD, then we will go put on some PT and Alt-J instead,
a 2!

I love The Smiths. I adore Morrissey. His Autobiography was a real treat and I actually did laugh out loud in parts. On the other hand I just don't love this track. Sorry, Moz.
This song reminds me of the news about the slaughter of dolphins at that cove in Japan. I can't believe they're stil doing that
Meat is delicious
Moby is big on animal rights too.
Least favorite song on a fantastic album. Here's hoping this gets dropped for "The Headmaster's Ritual."
I'm a fellow vegetarian, so I get the message here.
However, Morrissey is maudlin, discordant, and painful to listen to. I say give his entire discography a miss. Blech.

Outstanding song...despite the fact I love meat! More of this an less of the recent lame Morrissey solo work. A must own album BTW if you are a Smiths fan. ......and how is it this is the first time this song has made to the RP airwaves??!
That was a cow right?

Message: I just read a review by you about Meat is Murder and specifically about the album cover. I am the person on the album cover and it was taken in 1967 while I was in the US Marine Corps. The original saying on the helmet was Make War Not Love and I have the original photograph and newspaper clippings to prove this.

I like the Smiths a whole lot, but not this song. I hope I don't remember it when I next have a burrito.

Obesity rates in the UK are following the pattern you have experienced in the US for many years - eating too much meat is a big part of that with all the associated health problems - add the environmental issues caused by extensive ranching all over the world and maybe you should not feel quite so happy taking that prime rib.

What utter tosh - it takes 9lbs of veg protein to make 1lb of meat protein.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?
So are humans.
In fact, as Eddie Izzard points out, babies taste like chicken. ;)
wowwwww -- i haven't heard this in years....

Same.
Except for the vegetarian part.
This came on while I was eating an all meat pizza slice. I thought that was funny.
Oddly enough this is the first Smith's track i remember hearing way back when...seemed oddly out of place on the way home after a night of drunken debauchery...of course, then flipped the tape over and preceeded to hear the rest of this great album.
methinks a 7 for song, 10 for nostalgia, and 9 for the album.
oh, and Mr. Prins, i always enjoy your :sunny.gif:
The more i hear this the more i like it, and of course...nodster wrote:

PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals.
Typical Smiths fatuous moralizing.
Love the Smiths. Love this album. Hate this song, though. And I'm a vegetarian!
One of their best albums, if not... incl. the fascinating title song and album cover, which shows the "Meat is murder" slogan on what looks like a US (Vietnam?) soldier's helmet... Even if it doesn't exactly turn people into vegetarians, it might make people think about meat intake/over-consumption... Then again, it might not ;)

Not my favorite Smiths track but I still give it an 8. More Smiths the Better!
