ONE OF THOSE SONGS where my buddy Mike and I would be stretched out in bean-bag chairs after high school, passing the joint and looking up at the black light posters and solar-system-mobile on his ceiling, with this thing CRANKED so loud the speakers bucked and burbled with each jam-Hammond- and bass-note, and then his mom would pull up in the driveway and we wouldn't even hear... In fact, we wouldn't hear anything but this song until she would kick-slam open the door to his room and scream at the top of her lungs, TURN THAT CRAP DOWN! Landreth is one of those guitarists you recognise after the first 5 notes. Such a distinct style all his own.

Early 70's, my big brother and I shared a bedroom in Brooklyn. He had an 8 track / turn table quad stereo that I was forbidden to touch.
On those rare occasions that he left his room I disobeyed and risked a beating.
Thankfully, I was never caught in the act.
Machine Head was always my first choice, followed by Workingman's Dead and Dark Side of the Moon.
More than that was usually too risky, and I didn't find ELP worth the risk.

A rare 10 for me-it's all there, Blackmore plays so cleanly and creatively, and the interplay with the Jon, Lord of the B3- priceless. Roger is steady on the bass, it is well sung, well arranged, simply ageless.

First stadium concert I ever attended in Mpls. back in 72' (?). Deep Purple Machine Head Tour - opening act was some British blues band named Fleetwood Mac. Opened up a whole new world for me and a lot of others that night!
As good as it got for straight ahead rock, early 70's. This was the opening set list tune for a high energy cover band I had the good fortune to be involved with (Bass) circa 2001.

Jon Lord came and talked to us in my school church once. He was funny and lovely and secular and we listened like he was playing Hammond. He wasn't playing Hammiond. :(

That intro is stunning, mesmerizing. It could last all night and I wouldn't care. Machine head, the first Rock and Roll album I bought at age 12, just a little junior high girl.
My first year in junior college (71-72) we wore out the student union juke box playing this, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'. Flash forward to April 1974 and I was at the 1974 California Jam headlined by ELP along with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Eagles (with Jackson Browne sitting in), Rare Earth, Earth Wind & Fire, Seals & Crofts, and yeah, Black Oak Arkansas. I was born too late to enjoy many of the "classic" rock stars as they came out, and while I haven't yet delved into the Deep Purple catalog, I was very impressed by their RocknRoll HoF induction speeches and performance. Not that I really care about the RnR HoF typically, although I was happy to see SMB and NWA inducted that year; the highlight for me was Ice Cube's speech about how Rap, while not a traditional form of music, does have a lot of the same "question authority" mentality as regular Rock stars, and at least on that count, NWA did push the music industry in ways never done before.
I'm not sure what my point was here, maybe knowing I had a 7+ min track to be lazy while listening to got me off track. I've rated this sucker at a 9....and to all of you who were around in 1972 and blazing the Js and cracking the tabs on some brewskis and hauling ass in your hot rods....here's to you for making it to 2017! Long Live RP!!

With a couple New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPAs down the hatch and the fragrant Standard Orbit atmosphere of 'Flo' in here, this sounds every bit as good to me as it did (with the average weed and crappy beers we could get our hands on) back in the late 70s!

Crappy beers AND crappy weed, from what I recall. And then the Israelis had to invade and occupy southern Lebanon.... there went the supply of Lebanese hashish.... sigh.

I hear you. I do remember having all 8 cylinders of the 318ci engine firing hot in my well used '68 Dart convertible with this tune blasting away. Driving over the speed limit was obligatory!
