In parting ways
And parting hearts
A dress of leaves blows to the winds
Take these sacrificial remnants—untended
Bashed to dust
And trust distressed
Red cheeks, caved in

I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
Cause all we know, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't grieve anymore
Cause all I hold, is all I own

Is this a desperate wish for dying?
Or a wish that dying cease?
The fear that keeps me going and going and going
Is the same fear that brings me to my knees

I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
Cause all we are, is bled and gone

I am the air, the after
Always in the clouds
Searching for some answer
Parted now, I am the shore—repeated
Becoming air
I'm finally free

I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
What I can't see, can't hold to me
I don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
Won't grieve anymore

You need to see this band live. Sam gives his all with such energy. Like a mix of John Belushi and Jack Black with terrific vocals
Not a real fan of Samuels vocals. Sorry. And this tune and band are way over played. I know. I am not playing the music, only listening to it. But I do donate monthly so I should get a "say". So I can just hit SKIP.  Which I just di....
Just realized this has the same groove as Making Plans For Nigel.

Tried for years to unsee this after the Jimmy Kimmel Show . Didnt let it ruin the band for me though.

You deserve to be stuck in an elevator for eight hours with the appropriate music!
Really liked this band until I saw them live at the Salzhaus in Winterthur, Switzerland. Now I rate all their songs 10 - we were blown away!
not impressed, . . .skip . .
Absolutely killer track. Bill played this 5 years ago and I fell in love with Future Islands immediately, now they're one of my favorite bands of all time. Thanks Bill!
Anyone seen the vid, in which he bends every which way? Very impressed with his movement skills. In top of musical.
WHAT! This is not Peter Murphy?

Gave them a sucky score the other day; today I like it.

I'm wondering if that user accidentally commented on this song while actually listening to "Rise Above It" by Afro Celt Sound System, which played about 4 songs later in the RP playlist. The singer sounds very much like Bono, but apparently is a singer named Mundy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

aDoble1967 probably thought it was U2 because, as the song opens - to me, it sounds a lot like the rhythm of U2's "New Year's Day" song...
 Proclivities wrote:

Pretty good tune, but it seems like a lot of their songs have this same tempo and bass pattern.  Maybe it's just a few of them.

That's a problem?
Sounds like a more baritone Shannon Hoon, methinks 🤔 ?!
Is this Dieter from Sprockets? Would you like to touch his monkey?
Coming to Switzer Land in November. Yesss!
I rarely comment twice on one song, but I it still boggles how much this cotemporary band from North Carolina sounds like an 1980's German pop band.

The baseline is very very similar to Sunday Bloody Sunday.

And just think... that was in a pianissimo section.
This band has really grown on me since they first broke upon the scene... I love the way the singer goes full-on Joe Cocker during performances -- I hope to see them live one mind-blowing day!

Alot of 80s fun here:

I like Future Islands but but I think their sound is let down by the drumming. I'm surprised to see someone listed on percussion. To me it sounds like a drum machine programmed by a beginner.

I love that band !
I have to say...this song following Pink Floyd's "Shine on you Crazy Diamond", as it did just now, made for perhaps as perfect a transition between songs as can be achieved.
Clearly  chords from "New Year's Day" .
The bass makes the song great!
too repetitive OK OK we get it!! but still a tune that subtly evokes the time and place you heard it.
Love the sound of this band!  Why doesn’t Bill play Seasons (Waiting on You) anymore?
What the heck is that cover? Some sort of dying dandelion gingerbread man?
Thanks RP to ... m'avoir fait connaître ce groupe. Il a été important dans ma vie et je suis toujours très heureux de les écouter. J'adore la force d'interprétation et la personalité du chanteur et les compositions du clavieriste.
Awful, aching my [Dutch] ears. And it seems that RP airs Future Island at least twice a day. Do you guys & girls have a contract with them?
You have to check these guys out live.
The singer is quite something.
Recordings don't do him justice.

Watch a full show on YouTube and you'll bump up your ratings...
Sounds like a tipical 80'ties song.

What a cool, transparent connection you made with Crazy Diamond. Sounded like a continuation of the same recording.
Love Future Islands performance!  Originally caught them on Jools Holland on TV.  Fun to watch.
I've learned to like The Chain Smoking Greek.
Vocals like Images in Vogue from the 1980s... bizarre echo in time...
Some listeners here posted that they hear Peter Murphy and a British sound to this band. I get that comparison, but the sound reminds me of German synth-pop of the early 80s. Kraftwerk maybe?

Oddly, this song makes me feel like writhing just like the singer (based on a video I saw). It's propulsive and strangely compelling.

I've been wrong about Future islands, I put them into a group of new artists that seem to be put together in a boardroom and whose sole mission seems to be not to offend.  This song has some grit. Cudos guys!

Back in 82 a friend introduced me to Tom Waits via various homemade tapes. I was more than a tad surprised when I finally saw his album covers to discover he wasn't an old black blues man. Future Islands frontman pulled the same trick on me... not sure who/what I expected from his voice but it wasn't a cross between Jack Black and Burt Reynolds.

I would venture that you didn't look very hard.  As of right now I've rated 7822 songs.  I do tend to confine my song opinions to numerical ratings.  I doubt anyone really cares how much I hate song X or Y.

"Disbelieving" would have been a better characterization of my post.  Nonetheless, it was a serious (if somewhat curt) question.  What part of this reminds you of Tonight She Comes?

Evidently they listened to quite a few British electronic/synth artists from the 1980s, which is somewhat interesting since these guys were either very young or not even born when that music was released.  The singer even affects a British accent - nice touch for a guy from coastal North Carolina.
Oh, I like this.

maybe cuz another seatown RPster posted this pic, but damn and wow this looks a lot like one of my college party houses -  just north of 50th on Brooklyn....course they're all gone now w/ apartments up instead.

And maybe I'm one of the few that REALLy like Sam's voice....true I haven't listened to a full album as yet so maybe it get's tiresome when you flip the record?

Long Live RP!!

Second that motion.  Every time it comes on I look up to see if it is something new from the x-bauhausien.
It seems record companies sign up groups/ singers that are "off from the norm", but they wear a bit thin quite quickly. If you see this guy performing that point may arrive even earlier.

Yes, the same (3-chord) chord progression (different key) in the verses, different progression in the chorus.  When it comes to tempo, just about every Future Islands song has this tempo, and this one's tempo is faster than that of U2's song.

My observation also. Of course, my perception is based on hearing this band on RP. They have a distinctive enough sound, but if each piece hews to the same framework, this will wear out. Maybe this beat is necessary to unleash the singers' gyrations.
too melodramatic and lyrically repetitious....

Good call Proclivities.  I think of this as 'synth-pop'.  More traditional (irony intended) so-called progressive rock seeks to switch up the tempo, adopt unusual time signatures and use the bass on occasion to drive the melody.

I quite enjoyed the last Future Islands CD so I will listen attentively to this and other songs off The Far Field CD.
