Whoah, a big flood of memories come crashing in with this one... It's 1976, it's 9th Grade, it's hippie, trippy Mister McDonald's World History Class, First Period, and he's got THIS cranked up on his desk radio tuned to the cool Rock n Roll station, and we're writing down our responses to the questions he's written up on the chalkboard... I recall that on that particular day he was illuminating some Apocalyptic Imperial Madness and Middle-Eastern Palace Scandals and Intrigue for us...
...Same as it ever was... Same as it EVER was...

What a pleasure to learn about these guys.
Always amazed by the selections on this immaculate station.

Nice play William -- I just learned about the Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan band evolution from The Move to ELO
Had no idea ELO's version was a cover. Of a great original, too! Was fortunate to have seen Jeff Lynne's farewell show a couple years ago and this song was a highlight among highlights. Super glad to have heard this today, thanks Bill!
I had completely forgotten how magnificent this original is. Thank you for reminding me!

Funny how that works. Thanks for the link - interesting provenance!
I was about to say I prefer the original--i.e., the ELO version--only to find out that this is the original.
