Red, white, and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
We'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan
But I am to them
So I try to forget it, any way I can.
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
I see a girl in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
And she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life
And what she's done to it.
That's one more kid
That will never go to school
Never get to fall in love
Never get to be cool
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Just ask that goofball Joe Rogan.
Ha!
incredible how the irony of the lyrics are lost on a large contingent in this audience.
Too true. Much like Springsteen's "Born in the USA" a few years earlier.

Hilariously, this gets played as a rah-rah-America song at Trump rallies.

OLE NEIL FOR PRESIDENT! MAKE AMERICA WEIRD AGAIN
Wow, this comment has not dated at all.
OK -you wrote that 3yrs ago! ....NOW, Neil would Make America Smart Again!
It's pretty weird already.

Freedom is an illusion.
There'ws a walkin' sign,
Now shufflin' my feet.
That is weird. Never made that connection before. Bruce has been around Hollywood for ages, typically playing the cowardly bully or brittle establishment guy with weak morals...
Really prefer the studio version of this one.
My God, Stephen Stills looks deathly ill in calypsus_1's picture below.
Second that. This just doesn't stand up with just an acoustic guitar for me. Craving the Horse right now.

For example, the blatant, abusive and obscene use of the song "Rockin' In The Free World" for inappropriate purposes and frivolous, totally contrary to the objectives and convictions to which this song was created. Tell by the way that is revealing of demagoguery and levity by who had this unfortunate idea.
And by the way, also the subject of recent occurrence in the private life of Neil, give to this man the inalienable right to drive their private life the way he wants, because only he relates. And you only live once.
Agree 100%.
Trump's use of this song just further demonstrates his complete ignorance, arrogance and buffoonery.
Cheers, calypsus1!

My comment:
Unkle Neil, 69 yr old, remains active and cooperative in the music scene, at various events where participates, some pro-bono benefit, determined and convinced that this is the right path traversed since always with spirit of mission and their reason for being in this world. And this is not unimportant, for a career long and populated, more extensive, and inspiringly bright fruitful, when compared with many of the authors of his generation.
However, even for those who don't make the "tabloids" or "media-circus" the reason for their existence, are immune to being news and commercial exploitation of aspects of his private life.

Neil is Godlike in his straight-forward coolness (imo)! He was really great singing along with Stephen Colbert, 10/20 episode
Looks like the people there need to write a really scathing blog post.
Shut up...go sell crazy some place else...no one's buyin' here....
you are either very young, very brainwashed or blind. and next we get Jeb, the Bush around the corner.......
Congrats...20 years from now you can look back on this post and recall how you too were once a fucking buffoon like oldfart48..
Your willful ignorance is astounding, but do carry on.
In 20 years, I hope you've enjoyed the total corporate/police state control over your life (like a good sheep) and ruined environment. If not, you're sure to like the FEMA camps.
Actually, many of us do "buy it', since we know the US has become a neo-fascist state, aka corporatism, oligarchy, kleptocracy.

Keep rocking Neil!
In the crystal ball
The gypsy sees the villa
The riders on the hill
The fire in the fields
She sees the mission bell
Swinging in the silence
Now the shooting starts
The bullets pierce the hearts
The seqoritas crying at the well.
Up in the Gold Hotel
The money hits the table
The heavies all are there
That's why the deal's goin' down
Beautiful women all dressed in
Diamonds and sable
Down upon the street
Beside a garbage heap
A Mariachi band begins to play.
Somewhere a blues guitar
Plays echoes in the alleyway
The Tijuana dawn
Claims another day
The golden sun
Rises on the runway
The pilot understands
The money changes hands
Inside the jet
the briefcase snaps. Goodbye.
In Eldorado town
There lives a great bullfighter
His eyes are screaming blue
His hair is red as blood
And when the gate goes up
The crowd gets so excited
And he comes dancin' out
Dressed in gold lami
He kills the bull
and lives another day.

Awsome performance of Neil Young & Crazy Horse tonight Sep 29, 2012, in Central Partk, New York. Neil, at its best, continues to dominate the stage, aged 66, with vitality, emotion, conviction and delusion of the beginning of his career. It is truly amazing. Thanks for everything and "good to see you".
Everything he does is a 10 for me.
...............you said it better i ever could.....
This is the second time I have hit the PSD button since it was added... Previously I'd just hit the mute button...as fast as I could
On the other hand,,,,,,, this is one of my favorite songs of all time that I can never get enough of....so there
For some weird reason, when I hear Neil Young, I always wonder where I left my barf bag.
That sir is your choice as we are rocking in a free world. I hope you are barfing your guts out and bill plays some more Neil so you can empty out your system. I have my toes tapping and fist pumping singing along. Enjoy your chunks.

this sir are some wonderful words, hats off for that!
someone of neil young's stature and history (no matter if you love or hate him or his voice)
deserves respect.
and respect is something mankind has been constantly losing.
For some weird reason, when I hear Neil Young, I always wonder where I left my barf bag.
Probably beside your giant collection of Michael Bolton and Justin Bieber cds.
So do I. Clearly separated at birth. And when I see Bruce in a movie or as say, the evil old father in the TV Series Big Love, I keep expecting him to break out singing Like a Hurricane.
I'd like to add "Reality" tv to that list. I'm proud to say that I have not watched more than an hour of reality tv in the last 10 years. And while I do love watching football (and in a past life, a good joint), I made it a point not to check out of the real world. I still have to buy gas, food, and internet access, but at least I know I'm getting screwed while I'm doing it.
That's the whole reason for these song comments pages, to leave your positive and negative remarks
...Yeah, I guess 'barf bag' is pretty negative....
For some weird reason the fact you felt the need to post this annoys the shit outta me...

2004 On stage; 1 Neil Young - 2 Bruce singing the second verse; 3 Max Weinberg giving the song a great backbone on drums; 4 Pegi sharing a backup mike with Nils Lofgren who used to play a lot with Neil, 5 Michael Stipe and John Fogerty looking OK.
Well said, dcjenk2!
Agreed. Shrill. Not his best work. It should be put out to pasture.
Some songs are good not because of the singing or the playing, but because of the passion put into it.

"Immagine in Cornice"
"Got this DVD yesterday! Even my grandad liked it!"
"Released more than a decade past its peak in popularity, Pearl Jam proves it still has what it takes to captivate an audience with the concert film Immagine in Cornice. Culled from footage taken throughout the band's 2006 tour of Italy, the film captures the preternaturally youthful Eddie Vedder mesmerizing audiences with his full, rich voice" (from Amazon.com)
That's cheap !
We paid twice that money last year !
And as i stated before; There is No Free World !
if they had sat down, shut the fuck up and LISTENED they might have (god forbid) learned something.
Pretty much goes for most Americans in general. No one is paying attention. Just numb out, smoke your joint, drink your alcohol, watch your sports as your world goes down the toilet. The establishment is not stupid. It knows that if you keep the people numbed out and ignorant, it can do whatever it wants, while the nation is out to lunch.
"A passionate performance of My My Hey Hey/Hey Hey My My(Happy!). In acoustic mode for the first Farm Aid in 1985. Note the different verse orders."

I saw him live in '88 and he was amazing. This is amazing in the bad sort of way.

Yes, Dylan is a good analogy. If we were talking film I would compare him to Michael Caine. Caine believes in keeping busy, so he'll take on many projects, some of them good and some of them bad. Of course, you never know how an album or a film will turn out, you begin them with high hopes for the finished product. As for this song, I like it but I'm not crazy about this version. I remember seeing him preform this song, with Crazy Horse, on Saturday Night Live just after the album came out. He played it with ferocious energy, it was awesome, and he had a blue maple leaf on his torn jeans....go leafs go.
Knock off 2 for the harmonica. Love Neil Young lyrics, hate Neil Young's voice.
Normally I can put up with or even like Neil's voice. This, however, is hideous.

A few years back I worked for a summer on an ecology research crew on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The crew leader had an old acoustic guitar and some nights we sat at Toroweap Overlook, an abrupt edge a couple thousand feet above the dark brownish churning waters of the Colorado River and sang this song to the red tail hawks and thunderheads. Hearing this song really brought me back there, thanks.
That's like being sorry that 1+1=2. Facts are facts.
The image of Grandpa Jones singing this song came to me as I listened.
if we are already free, why is everyone (media, politicians, etc.) always reminding us how free we are? I think this song is sarcastic, right? like, it's not actually a "free world".
He's the real boss, not Brooce, and a better singer.
I read "Shakey" last summer. Occasionally the author can be a tad annoying but overall it's excellent. All those 70's albums are great. It was pretty slim pickings in the 80's but he rebounded in the 90's with some good CDs. Enjoy!
He's the real boss, not Brooce, and a better singer.
Time well spent my friend.
I'm glad you're standing up for the oft-forgotten sacrifices and contributions that junkies and their offspring have made to society.
Somebody's got to.
???
The lyric is about a junkie's child.
