With trunks of memories still to come
We found things to do in stormy weather
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
Long may you run.
Well, it was back in Blind River in 1962
When I last saw you alive
But we missed that shift on the long decline
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
Long may you run.
Maybe The Beach Boys have got you now
With those waves singing "Caroline No"
Rollin' down that empty ocean road
Gettin' to the surf on time.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
Long may you run.
My high school class song from back in 1980. While high school is eons away, I've lost touch with most of those folks, and the song is about a motorcycle, the sentiment, "long may you run" applies across the board to everyone, everywhere. I can't help but smile every time I hear it.
The consensus seems to be that it is ostensibly about one of (his first?) cars.
"'Long May You Run”'is ostensibly a tribute to a cherished car—a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse that Young drove from Toronto to Los Angeles when he first began his music career. The hearse, which he named Mort, would eventually break down in Blind River in 1965, and the reference in the song’s second verse, 'With your chrome heart shining in the sun, long may you run,' conjures the image of the hearse in its glory days."
Meaning of Long May You Run By Neil Young
I'm sure he said it was about his first car and his last girlfriend!
This song is now forever associated with the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics for me. Long may you run, Neil.
And kd lang sang Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the opening ceremonies - may Canada run long!
North f Germany is well too...what a great radio station, or?
meinst du odda?
Neil Young evokes a yearning that is so desirable. Just brilliant stuff. Always have liked Neil Young yet I own nothing.
The ultimate ascetic!
Thanks for asking, Portugal! Doing fine here in central Germany, though you certainly have better weather there...

Oh yeah, his energy policies. Wear sweaters and turn down the heat.
Yea, I'll forever associate this song with Conan now...

Such a nice album cover - I have it on the wall in an album frame.

The "best of" or the album it was originally on, Stills Young Band?

na.. i think tante's right
Man, I had been counting the days to 2009, when we would finally be rid of that goof Leno. Alas, like an evil boomerang, he just keeps coming back.
Well said - I was searching (more) under NY for a reference to Tonight's the Night, and couldn't find one out of 86! Am i missing something Bill? That was classic NY at his best!
People have forgotten (or never knew in the case of gen x and younger) how devastatingly horrible a president Carter was. So to support Reagan against Carter was really not so radical, except to the most bigoted leftist, I suppose.
This helps explain:

Where's the fun if we can't simply demonize musicians, politicians, etc.?
He did!?? A wha? Yikes. That surprises me.

So good

I think his brain blew a gasket for a while in the 1980s, which is how we ended up with the likes of Re-ac-tor and Trans. Fortunately he came roaring back in 1989 with Freedom and there have been more ups than downs ever since.
And my brainless Jaguar XJS.
(Hopefully the winning bidder was more successful in finding an ECU for it.)
Beautiful song — it's almost enough to make me forgive Neil for supporting Reagan back in the 80s. Anyway, thanks for playing it.

Neil's just a car kinda guy, I guess.
Everybody know where Blind River is?

It's strange, when I listen to his voice I don't like it. When I listen to the song as a whole it's magic. I like most covers, but the covers of Neil are always missing something - without his voice it just doesn't work as well.
I think you hit it square on. Neil's voice gives his lyrics an urgency which also gives them credibility and context. Without him they definitely miss something.
I have to agree...but I used to think that of Bob Dylan too, and I've gained an appreciation, so maybe I'll learn to like Young too?

He's not the only one singing on this CLASSIC! All the CSN&Y are present, and thereby hangs quite a tale...................
Steven is also supplying magical guitar to this.
Love the reference to Caroline No, a great song in its own right . How 'bout some more Beach Boys on RP?
