Thank you RP! I love and have studied Sitar music for many years. Anoushka Shankar is incredible when you see her live. Just as is the case with many outstanding musicians, I cannot help but marvel at her dexterity – as far as her fingers are concerned but also her mind.

It takes a lot of discipline to master the Sitar. Anoushka is a superstar in her own right, just as her half-sister Nora Jones.

Thanks for your post, I completely agree. Discipline indeed, I can just imagine the muscles in her hands and forearms. That intensity of play and the length of the piece must be very hard to achieve.

basicly I agree… but don't want to go that far and call it »racist«. or maybe I just don't want such a term to be necessarily used here on this 'island of the blessed'. this song however shows the wide range of RP's mixes: »expect the unexpected!« I assume the divergent ratings for this masterpiece are based on the fact that it's also part of the 'main mix'? just an idea… however I will never get tired of the diversity here on magic (long live) RP!

Very well stated!  ...Guten Morgen (Good Morning)!

Gang a bong, Get it on!  ...T Rex!  ...works every time!   PS: It would augment this tune very well!

True. I see a lot of elitism for world music, here on RP comments. People are either narrow minded, have prejudices or are plain arrogant and racist when they give low marks for quality ethnic/world music.

...or they have a shitty chain that can't reproduce the magnificently dynamic and oh so suttle and detailed nuances.
Excellent!

Seems pretty easy to bandy that term about these days. Shocking how intolerant those who wrap themselves in their virtue can be.

Now, back to the music - Shankar is an amazing virtuoso who gets this tune to seriously swing. If you don't like it: ain't nobody's business but your own.

In my experience at least 90% of people who throw around racism accusations, and here is a case in point, are themselves just ignorant.

Just as Bob Ross said you "you cannot have light without dark". If everything is racist then nothing is.  The word loses meaning. Enlightenment is lost.

It began making alot of sense towards the end.
Crazy performance!
I'm not a fan of Sitar but Ho boy can she play that thing... speed and accuracy. We have  to admit that she's great
Where is the nan?
Toooooo Long!

I agree.

I noted that one must listen to this song several times, then all the different aspects become clear.

It is just like a good jazz song - the epiphany comes slowly.
Very, very nice.

Stop whining and JUST DO IT

Great recording, blissful playing, superb.  One of her father's compositions I believe ... and it transports me back to India, which is no bad thing ...

I like it! Different! Refreshing! I don't think I could listen to it all the time but definitely more than I do.

I listen with interest and try to suspend my Western musical habits and responses. The musicianship is astonishing. One cannot fault the passion.  Jimmy Page and a bunch of others tried the sitar and the sound. I think they never quite got the hang of it.
Why am I annoyed?

I believe that was her dad, if I'm recalling correctly...pretty funny!

Not sure I could take a steady diet of sitar music, but I do like this.
Our "western ears" are not accustomed to this. I think that I warmed up to this many years ago thanks to Oregon (The group, not the state)

The wiki gods say that she is half sister to Norah Jones - Probably stated below in comments, but who has time for all that reading ;-)
Doing boring documentation work... perfect background music:)
This just has to be the lowest rated song on RP.
Hard stuff, if it was a 30sec song, OK, but it goes on for hours....
If this were a George Harrison track...it would average an "8" score. Hmmm...
Just missing a good bass line...that's all.

Not sure I necessarily agree with "racists"; but there certainly are a number of folks with very narrow musical comfort zones and very loud opinions about things outside those zones.  It does make me wonder sometimes why they're listening to RP.

i need weed.
Superb, with only one minor fault - not long enough.
nope
Saw her live in Trivandrum. She was the opener for a festival.Very nice concert!
I saw Ravi play with his daughter, Anoushka, almost 20 years ago.  What a wonderful concert.  You could really see the daughter father love on stage.  As I understand it, Anoushka was the only person Ravi ever mentored on sitar.
I was invited to a Ravi Shankar concert in Austin Tx, in the late 70's, i was 18 or 19.  Didnt know him or his music.  Have been a fan of the sitar and his musical influence ever since.   Thank you Bill for playing this.
Beautiful music - nice one Bill. It's just a pity that too many people seem to have a narrow view of what constitutes music. We're only one world, just enjoy the vast diversity we have to offer.
Wow, I wish he didn't play the extended version!
Bill, the needle’s stuck!
while I appreciate the skill, I have no interest in this music.  perhaps background at the hookah bar. perhaps a hash pipe is needed.

oh wait! love the ending!
sweet relief.
sweet sweet relief.
like nails on a chalkboard
Thank you, Bill. Great stuff from the Shankar legacy. I love that you followed it up with U2/Edge. I hear what you did there.
too loooooonnnnnnnnngggggggg

Anoushka is as lovely as she is talented. I was bowled over by her performance (and the Indian Orchestra) in the Concert For George. Mesmerizing!

I don't know.  Following this up with, say, The Flower Duet from Delibes' Lakmé might be just the ticket.
ENOUGH!!!!!!!

I kept thinking this song would finally be over. But.........................it...........................never.......................................................................................................................was.
Worst song I've ever heard bar none. On top of that, it lasted some 45 minutes. Please, NEVER AGAIN!!! So bad, I turned off my stream. You lost me for the day. Horrible!!!
I really, really dug that. I wonder who was playing the tabla? Incredible.
Not my cup of tea but kudos to Bill for the diversity of this station.

Don't worry, Freebird is coming right up (just not on RP)! Thanks for the raga, Bill, I needed it. Mindless in the most positive sense of the word.

Great song!
But Dogbreath, that\'s the beauty of RP, there are no \'classifications\' here. Bill can play whatever he wants. I LOVE THAT!! And I dig Anoushka Shankar, thanks Bill! :D
Oh, now there\'s some real tolerance...
Thank You Bill & Rebecca .... for including this with the moment of silence for George .... I will always remember sharing this moment with all of the \'Birds of Paradise\' ...
I absolutely LOVE it!!! I saw Ravi & Anoushka perform at the Kennedy Center in DC several years ago, and it was completely, utterly mindblowing to say the least. the amount of talent flowing from that stage was staggering. they were having a blast playing, and the vibe saturated the crowd - everyone left with a huge grin on their faces. :D
