They pulled in just behind the fridge
He lays her down, he frowns
"Gee my life's a funny thing, am I still too young?"
He kissed her then and there
She took his ring, took his babies
It took him minutes, took her nowhere
Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything, but
All night
She wants the young American
Young American, young American, she wants the young American
All right
She wants the young American
Scanning life through the picture window
She finds the slinky vagabond
He coughs as he passes her Ford Mustang, but
Heaven forbid, she'll take anything
But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
He misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?"
All night
She wants the young American
Young American, young American, she wants the young American
All right
She wants the young American
All the way from Washington
Her bread-winner begs off the bathroom floor
"We live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?"
All night
He wants the young American
Young American, young American, he wants the young American
All right
He wants the young American
Do you remember, your President Clinton?
Do you remember, Bill, you have to pay
Or even yesterday?
Have you have been an un-American?
Just you and your idol singing falsetto 'bout
Leather, leather everywhere, and
Not a myth left from the ghetto
Well, well, well, would you carry a razor
In case, just in case of depression?
Sit on your hands on a bus of survivors
Blushing at all the afro-Sheilas
Ain't that close to love?
Well, ain't that poster love?
Well, it ain't that Barbie doll
Her heart's been broken just like you have
All night
You want the young American
Young American, young American, you want the young American
All right
You want the young American
You ain't a pimp and you ain't a hustler
A pimp's got a Cadi and a lady got a Chrysler
Black's got respect, and white's got his soul train
Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands ache
(I heard the news today, oh boy)
I got a suite and you got defeat
Ain't there a man you can say no more?
And, ain't there a woman I can sock on the jaw?
And, ain't there a child I can hold without judging?
Ain't there a pen that will write before they die?
Ain't you proud that you've still got faces?
Ain't there one damn song that can make me
Break down and cry?
All night
I want the young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American
All right
I want the young American
All night
I want the young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American
All right

I am so glad nothing momentous happened while this was playing so I dont have to remember the rest of my life that I was listening to this when ___ happened.
Almost a 1. Out of the kindness of my black heart, a 2.
Painful to listen to.
Thanks RP for the provocation.
Should've never left the studio. This is not one to cite in defense of cover tunes.
Dig The Cure, dig Bowie, but this cover doesn't work.
Well my thoughts on this song has gone down... 3 :/
it just dossnt work
Robert Smith can do no wrong.........
the original is so buoyant and exhuberant-this is so flat and dead-doesn't match the lyrics at all.
My first time hearing this version, and I always apprecaite hearing new stuff, whether I like it or not.
Thanks Bill!
This cover doesn't work for me. The wry attitude of the song is lost.
I had my headphones off and herd the intro... And thought... Yay Bowie... Then put my headphones on and thought. WHAT THE FEKK HAPPEND TO THE SAX...
I love the Bowie original... but the intro on this version is feked... But dont get me wrong i quite like this version once you get into it.
I'm surprised their cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division didn't make it on this 4 disc compilation.
I think it was a very Cure-like (although, the kind of stripped down, slower variety) take on it, doing it justice, but making it their own.
The sevens have it!
I used to hate this song (the bowie version) now I love it and this version isn't doing justice to it AT ALL. and I miss Bowie's climactical "break down and cryyyyyyyy" in his high pitch voice.
I'm just going to pretend as though this didn't happen. Let's never speak of this again.
Shocked I like this. 7.
certainly not the best cover the cure have done (try their take on jimmy hendrix foxy lady) but it's good fun to hear this track.
it was also recorded for a good cause, to provide London with a decent radio station (Xfm)in the days before RP ofcourse! ;)
yeah...thought so...many discouraging comments about this one here...and, yes, they had it coming... SACRILEGE INDEED !

ditto
Not a cover worth doing.
Why did they even bother? What's the point?
Spare us, Bill. Please.
meh. unless something really interesting happens in the next 90 seconds, i don't ever need to hear this again.
Not even close to the original. This version is depressing.
Boy, does this sound mechanical. Sucks all the life out of it. Thumbs down.
let's hear it for some real The Cure, even covering Bowie, they are more authentic than that Ivy crappola that just played
This sucks. Sorry. Some original, non-cover, non-remix Cure would be just the perfect, ahem, cure for this.
Wasn't this a b-side?
no
A very witty transition! The covered now cover. However, I'd really prefer the original in both these particular cases.
no
