Sounds like a bunch of guys warming up for a show.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "enjoyable". There are better recordings of these guys doing this tune, though.
There's a lot of enjoyable jazz out there. I don't think this falls into that category.

I'm not sure that 'enjoy' is the word I would use either. Interesting, certainly, perhaps even 'challenging'...I'll have to give it another listen or two sometime.

I keep trying to appreciate this stuff, but it just doesn't do it for me. For the genre, this is quite good, and the virtuosity of the player is evident, I just don't care for the end result.
Sweet! That perked me right up!

Ditto... I can't help feeling like I've been beat up after I hear a song like this.
Me too, a bit, but who said music always has to be a soothing back rub? Art's role in life is to shake us up and make us experience things we otherwise wouldn't.

You had one cool daddy-o dentist.

I'd be tempted to seek out a different version of this Monk standard and upload it.
The mix does leave a lot to be desired. This is a live date from 1962 or so, and jazz doesn't do nearly as well in a large venue (Carnegie Hall) as it does on smaller stages (Village Vaguard).
btw, the reverse is true of classical.
When I was a kid my first dentist used to play this music in his waiting room. I couldn't wait to leave! This brings back bad, painful memories.

I must be musically challenged, and I know I'm talking about the great Coltrane, but this is a bit annoying.
Me too. I love early jazz, but never "got" Coltrane. It's like a noisy cat in the alley when you're trying to catch some sleep!
Just awesome! Who is drumming?
At last something to get your teeth into... Good choice.
This is permanently on my portable MP3. I never get tired of hearing it.
Thanks Bill, I needed this - 10
excellent album. check out Monk ~ Live At The It Club too, if you dig this stuff.
...just have to kind of let go and let the sounds do with you as they will...

My former roommate spent nearly a year trying to cultivate my taste for jazz... and he failed. I just don't like it. Even though I know these guys are some of the greats... 2.

My rock n roll brain just doesn't get this stuff.
NOICE!!!

Aint that the TRUTH!

I know everyone thinks this stuff is great, and I should relate being such a complicated mind. But my thoughts and rhythms just don't jive to this stuff.
Listening to that actually made me tired. Not sure if that's good or bad.

It's not that simple for me. Some jazz I really like and some (like this, which, to my ear, gives up melody, harmony, pleasantness for the sake of virtuosity) grates on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard. However, some rock (eg: AC/DC and their decendents, which gives up melody, harmony, pleasantness for the sake of, uh, screaming) does the same.

Hey, listen. This is about par for the course. Great jazz generates a histogram with two maximums (maximi?) at the bottom and at the top. Jazz. You love it or you hate it. Personally, I love it.

i can understand why this doesn't appeal to some. i wasn't into it until i started seeing jazz performed live.

Well, it's right!
I really love Jazz sometimes. But this is not what makes me happy. I hope I won't be killed by this comment.

I can't stand music like this either.
You going to tell me to shut up too.
I also agree!

Right back at ya, knuckle dragger.
These occasional excursions into the jazz realm are most welcome.
The eclectic mix is what defines Radio Paradise.
While I admit I don't like everything that's played, I do like most of what's played... and that's why I keep coming back.

Somebody else rated it worse than I did. I was generous enough to rate it a 2 since I recognize the talent of the players, I just don't like what they do with that talent.
I'm sure this will fare well with the voters, but the recent increase of instrumental jazz on the playlist has not been to my liking. Fair enough.

As the nifty new graphs clearly show, you either love this kind of thing or hate it. Put me down for "hate".
To each his own, but I'm off to the LRC.
You're that one guy, then? Too bad, but see you 'round the LRC anyway.

Totally off the scale. Everything else evaporates while this is on.
Coltrane = 10. (by default)
Monk = 10. (on spec)
Monk * Coltrane = ...
Monk and Coltrane at their best!
A great way to begin the evening, with my just-added upload of "Epistrophy" swirling through the virtual aether here on RP. Thanks to Bill and Rebecca!
I thought I recognized 'Trane..... yeah, baby!
Always loved Monk's playing.
Coltrane, while legendary in status, was never one of my faves.
