If I keep holding out
Will the light shine through
Under this broken roof
It's only rain that I feel
I've been wishing out the days
Oh, oh, oh come back

I have been planning out
All that I'd say to you
Since you slipped away
Know that I still remain true
I've been wishing out the days
Please say that if you hadn't gone now
I wouldnt have lost you another way
From wherever you are
Oh, oh, oh, oh oh come back

And these days they linger on
And in the night I've been waiting
For the real possibility that I may meet you in my dreams
I go to sleep

If I don't fall apart
Will my memory stay clear
So you had to go
And I had to remain here

But the strangest thing today
So far away and yet you feel so close
And I'm not gonna question it any other way
There must be an open door
For you uhh uhh uhh....to come back

And the days they linger on
And every night when I'm waiting
For the real possibility that I may meet you in my dreams
Sometimes you're there and you're talking back to me
Come the morning I can swear that you're next to me
And it's okay

It's ok
It's ok

Oh, I'll be here....come back, come back
Ahhhhh I'll be here...come back, come back
Ohhhh I'll be here...come back, come back

Whoooo whooo whooo whoo
Whoooo whooo whooo whoo
Whoooo whooo whooo whoo
Whoooo whooo whooo whoo

vocals are like a more shitty-ier Dylan...is that even possible?
There are shades of depression, which, no doubt, makes listening to it so intriguing. For example, Pearl Jam depression is rather generic, without much nuance if any. Nick Drake depression? Now that stuff's the freakin' rainbow. We don't talk about it much.

I really enjoy Eddy Vedder, Natalie Merchant, Neil Young and Jay Farrar, to name a few; other listeners talk of shoving pens in their ears (!) to avoid hearing their voices. hahaha

Interesting.

I concur with all four you mention, and they're all so different from each other. What they DO have in common is a complete lack of whininess.
It's peculiar. I do not like this voice in general, based on the omnipresence of Eddie Vedder here. This particular example, however, grates mightily upon my sensibilities. I do not especially expect classically beautiful singers (I like Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, for example), but there is something aggravating about this voice. Obviously, this is simply one opinion. But, jeez, he really does not sing. There is a bit of intonation evasion going on, also.

Are you sure ?  You sound a little bit ambivalent about Vedder's voice there ...  {#Wink}

Sounded like a struggling wedding or prom band - that being said, I did enjoy it.

Couldn't disagree more.  He has a wonderful, evocative and unique style.

Now I also appreciate sitting around the house on Saturday listening to Dylan, Waits, Young and Costello as well as say Bowie, Mercury and McCartney to name three almost universally agreed great singers.

So Ed ain't your thing.  I love him.

I love all of those singers you named as well, Eddie Vedder still sucks balls.

Maybe in a throbbing sea of humanity, flogged by powerful axwork through a long night, those animal howlings might transport you to another plane; listening around the house on a Saturday morning, you hit mute.  I think the raters before me had it about dead on, based on a better than pretty good through much of its run, but no better than a 6.1 due to the mute button at the end. So, not a PJ-hater, but more of a lover-hater. Maybe we could add letters to the ratings. I give it a 6.L-H.

I think the Pearl Jam haters should give them some credit. They have been around for a while. They survived the Seattle grunge scene ( unlike so many others)  and they have stuck true to what the do. I like them. They have written some great songs OK, P.J. haters bring it on .

My dislike doesn't come from his singing ability. He can indeed hit the notes, his pitch seems to be average for a rock singer, no argument there. It's his TONE. That affected grunge voice that was responsible for ruining so much of 90's music. That, and the billy goat vibrato, which I always dislike... see Stevie Nicks.
I second both comments, particularly the one about Stevie Nicks. Billy goat vibrato sums it up perfectly.

@mfassett: an intelligent critique. I find this song enjoyable, but I agree with you. It makes it difficult to hear for anything but small doses.

You are forgetting that PJ was one of the first 90's grunge groups to make their appearance, alongside Nirvana, as we all know, and that many, many singers adopted Ed's vocal style as their own. If you were talking about Scott Stapp (or Sap depending on your point of view) I would agree with your "affected" comment, but you can't fault Ed for his original style and tone. When other singers borrow/copy another's style for which the person they're borrowing from has had fame and success, in an attempt to cash in, THEN it's "affected." And of course Ed had his own "influences" that can be heard in his style, but so the Beatles had Elvis (as well as many others), it just goes with the territory. (And that "vibrato" is properly referred to as "tremolo" even in classical music)
Referring to previous comment "billy goat vibrato"....what up with that? While I think the comment is funny and clever it is quite off the mark. A lot of us seem to love Eddie's strong and powerful voice, vibrato included.
That was... surprisingly painful.

A pretty and soulful rock n' roll love song from a stellar band...
Ehhh. This song was bad 6 months ago, and still bad today. Less PJ, **please**
shortly after the record came out this song started haunting me, i couldn't get it out of my head for 4,5 days without a single break, not a second...it made no sense since i was happy at that time, riding all the good and great waves of happinees and success... on the fifth day of the haunting phase my grandfather passed away...i started to question why all this was happening...very strange and very heart tearing... well...the only thing i could think of was the words come back, come back... takes me back all the way to back there, still miss my grandad..................... i'll be here, come back

I like avocado sandwiches with mayo and spicy speckled mustard. I've seen cottage cheese put in the pit, too. Avocados are great since they are a monosaturated fat!!! Which leads me to ask, is this a monosaturated album? JK!
Vocals its so emotional .. very good song , relax my feelings and my body at the same time ..
kneejerk... every time... that voice... is it merely auditory or an adverse emotional quality... he never emphasizes in his voice musical ideas which are interesting to me i guess... though i concede his popularity

Something to be said about that given pop culture and the trend towards "creating" artists in the studio nowadays.
agree. My first PJ concert blew me away with the quality of musicianship and Ed's incredible vocals, not only just as great as in the studio, but multiplied by 1000. This may not be one of the best in their library, but they've always liked experimenting with different musical genres and venturing out of their comfort zone.

Easy, bro - it's about musical preferences, not world peace. I'll agree with you that Vs had some cool tunes, but that was a long, long time ago, and this song wasn't on that album. Personally, I don't care for this song, and Pearl Jam has been so overplayed (perhaps they are victim of their own success) that I'd rather listen to something else. Just my 2 cents, nothing more. Live and let live. Regards.
If you had asked me before, I would have said that I don't like Pearl Jam - but now there's at least 2 of their songs that I've rated "quite likeable". Defintely like the guitar work here.

Come back is a beautiful song, reminds me of their classic "Black". The song starts on a slow note, but builds up beautifully. One of my favourites on the Avocado album.
Talking heads and PJ are the most overplayed bands here on RP I think. Not that there's anything wrong with that..
