It was so ground-breaking at the time...and can still send shivers down my spine and put a thousand memories into play all over again!

There are women who like Steely Dan , both the band and the namesake......
Townsend and Daltry will be headed out on tour doing this entire album. I saw Daltry solo doing Tommy and it was really good. Not the same as seeing the who but he had a good band with him.

I am definitely a woman. No matter. Where the WHO are involved....it's all Rock And Roll AND I LIKE IT!

A great song from a great album.

Casey, thank you for your comment. I did mean it when i said "no disrespect intended". I don't propose that ALL women don't enjoy artists such as the Who, but it's been my experience that the band has a largly male following as it's core audience. Or did. The group is no more in my eyes, but there is no denying that they were a powerful force that resonated strongly with their audience. I guess I just wanted to understand the original poster's great dislike of the band a little better.

Beats me, but I know that the Who got on my tits back in the 70s when they were superstars. I just didn't 'get' them then, and definitely don't 'get' them now. At least in those days they fitted into the whole baroque prog-rock superband thing, including 'rock operas', fleets of lorries to carry their kit, and smashing said kit up on stage. Pretentiousness was very in, with Yes and ELP and the rest elevated to the status of gods, who were then pleasingly dethroned by the iconoclasts of punk. These days, such pretentiousness dates badly, IMO.
Pretentious - no doubt. Overblown - certainly. But IMHO, the difference between them and Yes and especially ELP is that Pete actually wrote many many great songs. I never got into Yes or ELP because the Beatles taught me it wasn't about virtuosity, it was about the song. Musicianship and even theatrics - I love Bowie - but only in service to the song. Could name the Yes and ELP songs I thought were good on one hand.
And my recollection, and I was very heavy into the NY punk scene, is that there was a grudging respect among the punks for the Who, and less willingness by the "rough boys" to just dismiss Pete and Co. than they were to others.

A nice, relaxing start, with the sea and wind and rain and rumbling of thunder, then Daltrey et al have to spoil it with their pretentious warblings and noodlings. A Who double bill, as well, so best away off to iTunes until this wee treat for Who fans is over.

I tolerated Tommy - although I loved the way they rocked those songs on Live at Leeds - the My Generation medley. Quadrophenia, I tried my best to ignore.

We used to do it all the time on American Rock radio and then some, prior to 1996, before Clear Channel came along and destroyed radio as we knew then...but that is OK, as 3g and 4g mobile broadband brings a new world of communication to choice, Clear Channel can kiss my ass. Thank god, we can stream Bill's RP now on a mobile device!.
By the way, "Quad" has to be a favorite of mine. A true and masterful piece of art! 10 x 10
All the best to you Spaceman!
My dearest male friend is a radio music programmer, and Clear Channel was nearly the death of him. He can put sets of music together so they flow seamlessly... It's an art and a pleasure, not a chore - if the dedication to music is there. He always tells me, "If the set is good, it takes you on a journey and leaves you with deep thoughts about where you just went."
RP is the closest thing to that wonderful era of vinyl and live bodies in a radio station, with little censorship (so "Who Are You?" could be played in its entirety without a bleep every time Daltrey sang the word "fuck.") My friend keeps urging me to win the lottery, buy a radio station, and hire him. I really wish I could... But RP is the next best thing!
And as I type this, we've heard three Who songs in a row:
The Who - Quadrophenia
The Who - The Real Me
The Who - I Am The Sea
The groove just goes on...

Bob Harris interviewing Keith Moon about his first solo album, his move to LA and the latest Who album.
This sounds terrible? It that the way the song goes or just quality of song?
I love The Who regardless.

Quadrophenia - Is there a better expression of teen angst?
Where's that power chord Pete?
ahhhh. there it is....
There have been some great bands played today - but all a bit melancholy - good to hear we're getting a bit more upbeat
Feeling better Bill?
I am starting to think that I could just listen to the sounds of the sea and the rain without the music . . . Argh. Apparently I've turned into a new ager.

Here comes that killer BASS! And Moonie's bashing! And that slashing Schecter! And Roger's bloodcurdling screams! God it ROCKS!
