Yes, the music isn't bad, but McGuinn's singing sounds so strained and contrived that it's almost humorous.  It reminds me of the music teacher from Beavis & Butthead, singing the "Lesbian Seagull" song.

Man, this sure sounds a lot like this tune in some places...especially the CHORUS!
LOST IN YOUR EYES (Debbie Gibson)

I get lost, in your eyes
And I feel my spirits rise
And soar like the wind
Is it love that I am in?
I get weak in a glance
Isn't this what's called romance?
And that's what I know
Cause when I'm lost
I can't let go

(Chorus)
I don't mind
Not knowing what I'm headed for
You can take me to the skies
It's like being lost in heaven
When (and) I'm lost in your eyes

I just felt
Don't know why
Something is there
We can't deny
Ooh, when I first knew
Was when I first looked at you
And if I
Can't find my way
If salvation
Seems miles away
Oh, I'll be found
When I'm lost in your eyes

(Repeat Chorus)

I get weak in a glance
Isn't this what's called romance
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost
In your eyes.

Following the Eliza Gilkyson cover of "Is It Like Today" this one is bone-chillingly bad. I really like the musical accents from Calexico, but this is one of those classic songs where the original is so perfectly toned and so perfectly arranged, that a cover like this has no chance. THis one may need a pass through the "bit scrambler" to help it disappear from the rotation.
Get going already!
I like this version. Calexico's sound is perfect for this song.
{#Rolleyes}
The drum gave this away as a Calexico Collaboration almost instantly.  John C sure has a unique sound.
işte calexico!!
A nice tribute to one of Bobs' greatest........................9 for the song..................

This song is not there!
Mcguinn sounds as if he had a full bladder but had no time to piss!

gee, what a disappointment. Rates an 'ugh'.

Ha! I agree with the Christopher Guest reference. This is straight from "A Mighty Wind". The song is awful and sounds contrived and forced.

Nicely said.

Noooooo  {#Snooty}   Bob's version only, if at all!!
Somehow I don't that is Meg on the drums.

The Bob version is definitely better than this.

No question. Ugh. Like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Sounds like a Christopher Guest parody.
What truly amazes me is that some listeners have given this 9 or 10. I guess it takes all sorts ...{#Stupid}
Sure do love the 'desire' version

this one, i don't know, McGuinn ruined it IMHO, he sings it so complaining....
mcguinn sounds awful.
music is ok, but not a great dylan song either.
very repetitive. best forgotten.
Ponderous

I enjoyed this... as do I Bob's, and as do I Robert Plants. It's a great song.
Love that soaring trumpet

 Agreed.

I expect covers to be as good or better.  This one misses the mark.

I'm Calexico'd out.
I Desire the original
Give me Bob's version anyday....the Calexico mexico background is the only redeeming thing about this.
nice{#Cool}
The Bob version is definitely better than this.
I need some tequila.
I miss Mexico.

God Bless The Plant

Bad, bad BAD version! {#Stop}   Bring Bob's version back, please!  {#Bananajam}
Disappointing version, even more considering the fact that RMcG is involved.

Nice, I like it. Más café y Calexico por favor
And now, Joe Lieberman on lead vocals!

Good song. But this version reminds me of something from the soundtrack of "the Good the Bad and the Ugly."  I like the Robert Plant version much more. From the Dreamland CD. Worth checking out!

For the love of Pete... make it stop....

Great song, whoever does it. I actually kinda prefer Bobby's whiny version.

I do too, but note that his whininess (that doesn't look right) is greatly tempered by the presence of Emmy Lou Harris on vocals.

Your voice is not like a meadow lark.
Good song. But this version reminds me of something from the soundtrack of "the Good the Bad and the Ugly."  I like the Robert Plant version much more. From the Dreamland CD. Worth checking out!

This might be sacrilegous, but, the best version of this song is performed by the White Stripes.

Can we get a back to back to back to back . . . of every version of this song. I can listen to it for hours!

I personally hate em all.

I've been in the Hotel California they say inspired the song....it is in Mexico, near Cabo.

I previously posted the following: "PLEASE PLAY BACK TO BACK EVERY VERSION OF THIS SONG EVER SUNG BY ANY PERSON OR GROUP!" I now must retract this statement as this version is at best mediocre and borderline terrible.
Love the song. Meh on the version.

HaHa! What a frightful suggestion, but right on the mark...this guy's singing is outright maudlin

I did a 7 disk compilation of coffee songs called Java Junkies. (There's a surprising number of GOOD songs about or mentioning coffee. There were nearly 5 disks worth of BAD songs that I culled out.) I had enough good versions of this song to put one on each disk. (This one didn't make it ) You're right....the White Stripes version was probably the best American version, but Sertab's weird middle-eastern version was the very best.
I usually like Roger McGuinn, I usually like Calexico, and I like this song. But this version just doesn't do it for me.

Is that Sertab doing the female backing vocals? I like her version of this better than any other that I've heard. I think I'll upload it for mass consumption, Bill willing.
At first I thought it was Noir Desire in english...

I agree...but this has that Mexican flare to it so give it that much. His voice is just so weak compared to Dylan, and this version lacks essence.

I prefer this one; more intelligible. Dylan is a masterful composer, one of the best of our time. But I can't stand the way he sings.
The White Stripes' version is great too, though his voice isn't for everyone either.

Well, Roger has a long, successful track record of covering Dylan, and Calexico's sound fits the song quite nicely, but the original is just so damn good that this pales in comparison. Still, I give it a 6. (Wish Roger could get a record contract so we'd hear more from him. Although giving away his folk recordings (click here) is pretty cool .)

Just saw this movie on a plane over the weekend. I really liked it and for whatever reason gave me a whole new appreciation for Dylan. I guess that was probably their goal but it sure worked for me. I've been pursuing Dylan stuff ever since, and I'd never been a huge fan before, just admired a handful of his songs (like this one). I'd definitely recommend checking out the movie, if for no other reason than it's a very different approach to a biopic (though that's not a good label for what it is).
Cool!
