When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Hoo, you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it comin' off o' the line, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!
M-m-m-my Sharona
Come a little closer, huh, a-will ya, huh?
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keepin' it a mystery, it gets to me
Runnin' down the length of my thigh, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona (Yeah!)
When you gonna give to me, g-give to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona?
Is it d-d-destiny, d-destiny
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, woo!
M-m-m-m-m-m-m-my, my, my, aye-aye, woo!
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona
Hoooooo-ohhh, my Sharona
Hoooooo-ohhh, my Sharona
Hoooooo-ohhh, my Sharona
Great song, but what's up with all the pedo references in 80s tunes?
Different thinking about youth and sexuality back then. Woody Allen released "Manhattan" in which the lead, a 42 year-old writer for TV (played by Woody) has a romantic relationship with a precocious 17 year-old (Mariel Hemingway). It was a huge hit and is regarded as one his best films.
I was a teenager when "My Sharona" came out. My friends and I thought it was catchy but stupid and OTT--like a guy who's always making sexual references and comments. The Knack seemed obsessed with sex.
In some ways, our society is a lot more sexualized now. The Internet made sexual references and content easily available. But we are a lot more aware and intolerant of sexual abuse and assaults.
I would have to say that the line "I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind" is a little creepy.
Actually, no. Doug was engaged to Sharona. Even though they broke up, she took care of him while he was dying.
Sharona is a successful real estate agent in Los Angeles.
It's popularity may have over-shadowed the terrific guitar solo.
The 45 single version cut a full minute from the solo compared to the album edit. One of the best guitar solos ever.
What's with all the pedophile songs in the 70s?
It was the dark side of the Sexual Revolution of the '60's coming to the surface.
god I hated this song when it first came out.
Now… I Kinda love it.
Go figure.. 🙄
Same Here!! I guess I'm gettin' senile (just turned 68)!
Now… I Kinda love it.

yes, there's another steely dan song of the same ilk, i forget what the title is. maybe everyone's gone to the movies, but i think there's another one, too. creepy. but i do love the dan. and this song, too. although, i never realized the lyrics "i always get it up for the touch of the younger kind" yikes.
Was even worse way back... Gary Puckett, Young Girl... and so many more lol. My daughter asked me once, what's with all this pedophile shit? My my, the times do change... (thank the gods)
This is a timeless classic. Not one one bad song on this album. All of it deriving from the muse that WAS Sharona.
Thank you Sharona Alperin
An immensely dumb song then, and at least as dumb a song now. And I like hearing it.
Right?? lol Good times.
My wife and I have a play list called "Songs of Sexual Deviance" including things like Billy Idol's "Sweet 16" and Steely Dan's "Cousin Dupree."
This one makes the list :)

Weird Al has spoiled / enhanced so many songs, this being among the first, if not THE first.
Now I no longer hear the originals in my head.
it is in my head now. Funny parody!
Sorry folks, that's what we sang in our junior year of high school when this song came on the radio.
Listening to his music always makes me smile. Grinning is always indicative of a mood upswing. Music is a great catalyst for that kind of attitude shift.
Wooooo woooooo.
Why? Well, r & r is always about sex. That's what rock and roll MEANS. But this song is about a groupie and a fan of the band. That doesn't mean she wasn't schnogging one of the Knack dudes, but maybe it's just about, you know, sex. What's deviant?

Aaargh!. That would have been a good comment with correct spelling!

...When Fieger was 25 years old, he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin
A picture of Sharona Alperin appears on the 45 sleeve for this single.
Edit:
Apparently work about $6 if I hadn't eaten it back in the day.
And I had forgotten how good the song was.
Always thought the Toyota motor company should have used this song (My Corona) as an advertisement

My thoughts exactly! The ear worm special!

I've lived in Denver forever, which station?
Now I no longer hear the originals in my head.
When I was young and goofy, I used to do the same at parties. Back then hard rock and heavy metal were the "cool thing". There's nothing more satisfying to "shower" a pumped-up crowd with Shubert's "Ständchen", Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" or even Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". :)
And again just now. The segue is a bit...jarring but hey it's fun.
The way I remember it, The Knack took some heat even among my teen peers for panting an awful lot about sex in this and their other hits. But for some reason--maybe because the playing is so tight--this isn't a nostalgia piece.
I didn't say stop!
H.J.S.
Sharona now
Are you sure that's not Adam Sandler in drag?
Weird Al is going to be at the Minnesota State Fair with a full orchestra this coming week!
What is he going to conduct?
And once again today !
Absolutely right. But perhaps one is immensely dumb to not like that simple trickster gimmicky but fun guitar break.
This one makes the list :)
I have one I titled "Restraining Order" with "Spoonful" and "It's Now or Never" and Blondie "Call Me" and "I Put a Spell on You" and "Barrel of a Gun" and "I Will Possess Your Heart" and Adele's "Hello" and many more (an unnervingly large number of songs) of romantic obsessions that go way beyond OK. And of course the Police "I'll Be Watching You."
Might have to include this one, as well.
PS: You have Rolling Stones "Little Queenie" on your list, too, right?
This one makes the list :)
Play other tracks from this album, Bill ?
I was in the heart of the demographic target when this came out and a lot of us thought The Knack were almost obnoxiously obsessed with sex. But yes, dumb and fun. Woo!
Yes, looking back at those lyrics... I think it was ALL of their songs that were just over the top with it. But hey, it was working for AC/DC, so why not? Times have changed.
I never paid enough attention to this song until today, so just now noticed the incredible solo, and drums to go with it! New found appreciation!
I'm with you on that one!
very crisp and clear.
Yep, it's hard to get through most of it, as I think it was mediocre AND annoying. But, the axe-attack is pretty good. Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned (was everyone else afraid to be too obvious?) but that solo sounds greatly influenced by "I Need a Lover" from then-Johnny Cougar, done in '78, just a year previous. (Interesting that Pat Benatar covered Cougar's tune, too, in 1979, and got much air play with it.)

A good example of being kind of "meh" when this song came on the radio then or now...but on RP it has a new, much deserved life!
R.I.P. Doug and Bruce
Albeit slightly creepy.
Slightly? Only if you happen to be into 14 year old girls.....
One man's garbage is another man's gold? Well, something like that...
Actually, this is an excellent example of overplay on the radio ruining a fun song with a phenomenal guitar jam. I get it, some people hate it, but that doesn't automatically make it bad. Art, in whatever flavor or shape, is still art. And, this is one of my all time favorite songs, despite getting dumped by my first real love that year. Anything raunchy and wrong took the edge off! My Sharona and Good Girls Don't did it for me.
I feel sorry for the haters who didn't get The Knack.
I guess I'm more impressed CREEM actually wrote an article about The Jam while they still existed!
you're no fun!
(Has that Sweet Jane / Baba O'Reilly chord sequence.)
Albeit slightly creepy.
Rock and roll sandwich: 4 minutes of stale bread surrounding a nice tasty slice.
I will always think of Cheech and Chong when I hear this

Probably would have been a better segue to leave out Arctic Monkeys, but the collision could have cost Bill his FCC license.

True. There are plenty of tunes that could be called "dumb" - even The Beatles had some (e.g.:"Ob-La-Di, Ob-la-Da" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"). Being dumb doesn't automatically make them bad songs.
I love both of those songs. Got any others?
For an insightful look at how one hit wonders create lasting, recurring revenues, find the Freakonomics podcast episode about My Sharona….
Definitely worth a listen. They have made (and still make!) a crapton of money from this one song.
