One you assumed that you deserve
Nothing you should lack now
Reverting back to type
Never mind you lost your nerve
Yeah you had a go at
Sleeping in the van
But you couldn't let it go too far
Now you got a pension plan
And your name's on the insurance
And you can drive another woman's car
A kind of glamour
You can lend yourself
Like dark sunglasses
And you'll remember
How good it tasted
Inside the ruling classes
Wasted, behind your dark sunglasses
She's got a ball gown for charities and such
Like a débutante from days gone by
Shaving, wearing a tie, isn't sacrificing much
You lucky guy you can still get high
Yes sir, No sir
Sunday will be there
You only have to please that lady
Think anything you like
But be careful what you say
For another warm night, another dry day
A kind of glamour
You can lend yourself
Like dark sunglasses
You remember
How good it tasted
The ruling classes
Wasted behind your dark sunglasses
I'm not toein' the line
You'll be fine
I'm not toein' the line
A kind of glamour
You can lend yourself
Like dark sunglasses
You remember
How good it tasted
the ruling classes
A kind of glamour
You can lend yourself
Like dark sunglasses
You remember
How good it tasted

wow. great photo. but imo much more attractive as a brunette, not that she'd care what i think.

Can't tell if Ms Hynde is condemning the person in the song or lamenting a period in her own life.
Perhaps both?
Yeah like don't wear tight jeans if you don't want to be raped, otherwise it's your fault...
This is what Chrissie is teaching young women.
The brain dead moron.
You are welcome to your opinion, brain dead moron.
A nice flip on the usual attitude that it's the woman who's kept. But be it a woman or a man in that position I suspect the undercurrent is much the same...."Think anything you like; but be careful what you say." Yes indeed. In fact, to go with a generalization, I'll bet this is the prevailing attitude for most everyone who works for anyone other than themselves....

Do you post this doofus-ness for every Chrissie Hynde tune on here, recorded post-"12/1979"?
Public Service Announcement: Please pay for RP. Send them $5 a month or MORE. I give and we should all do so. Nothing stays free. Support Radio Paradise. (I'm not paid to say this, just a fan, who pays for you to enjoy).
My motto is: Pay for what you love!
It's great that RP is offering their services "for free", but just as I like to be paid for the job I'm (hopefully) good at, there is a reason why I constantly come back to RP, that is worth paying for. (For me, at least!)
hearing Chrissie makes me wanna enjoy a big fat greasy cheeseburger
I would x 10 if possible !
Awesome!
...seems more applicable to your post (crown and all) than this song.

Sure, there are varying degrees of tint in glasses. Try buying your sunglasses somewhere other than Walmart.

... I would suggest I didn't use good judgment on staying safe. My understanding is her comments were comparable.
This is also the meaning I inferred. Seemed reasonable to me.
Myself and others were offered similar advice as US Navy sub sailors preparing for shore leave — even in US cities: Be discreet about who you are with and how much money you're carrying, and be watchful about what people seem to hang out near you.
Back to the lyrics. I'm lucky enough these days to often find myself, "... wasted behind my dark sunglasses." (Though never driving; see second paragraph. Drunk driving is NOT staying safe.)

If I go into a rough bar and start to flash around a lot of cash I don't think I deserve to be beaten up and robbed. However I would suggest I didn't use good judgment on staying safe. My understanding is her comments were comparable.
Personally I also don't believe abusing victims of a traumatic assault is a constructive way to behave, no matter what views they may express.
Honey, you're still younger than I am, and you're still hot, hot, hot.

I think that's a little different than the usual "I'll give it a 78, because it's fun to dance to."

Are there any moderates out there ?

Ah, well that's not quite true. See this Guardian article. Basically, she was talking about her own experiences, and not trying to make any kind of general statement about women, rape and dress:
“I told my story the way I saw it,” she said. “I’m not here to advise anyone or validate myself or justify anything. I say I regret a lot of things I did.”
I do wish that folk wouldn't interpret the f*ck out of what rock stars say in unguarded informal interviews - it's that interpretation, and interpretation of interpretations, yea unto the Nth interpretation, that makes celebs get their PR folk to manage their public pronouncements to the point of terminal blandness. At least she was honest.
And again today, m8! ;)

Can't you tell she hates doing interviews? I thought she appropriately rebuffed some of the inane questions she was asked.
bump+1
While I feel the Pretenders just petered out you can't deny the bands first two albums were blinding good and I can assure you when the Pretenders emerged with the 80s they certainly weren't perceived as boring.
7 to 8
agree - my rating keeps getting higher and after each listen.
Ok, what am I missing? I can't seem to find where it shows the play history of songs on here, just the last time it was played, which, by the time I look, is the current date/time. Serious question.
Edit: Duhhh, never mind, I see that it shows the # of plays over the last 30 days. Still, it would be cool to see just when it was played over the last 30 days. Bill??
Yeah! 6 times in 30 days, or once every 5 freaking days. I don't know how you can stand that much repetition!

The bassline makes me think of Chrissie strutting around :)

I gotta agree with the original OP. I feel like I hear this everyday. I hate to be negative towards her so It's an ok tune.

Maybe not as boring... But just as annoying....
You guys are breaking my heart. My band is consistently compared to the Pretenders. . .and I've always considered that to be a huge, rocking compliment. Seriously though: boring? Annoying??

Richard Thompson - Crawl Back Under My Stone
(at least i think that's what its called)
Now i'm going to have to go & find that & see if it really does, or not . . .
She is the real deal !!
The best release, so far, of 2014, imo.
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ALBUM - WOOOW!
Good production.
ditto. why is it being played so much?
I absolutely loved the Pretenders first and second albums but each subsequent released I liked slightly less to the extent I hadn’t kept up with Chrissies later work. However after hearing tracks on Radio Paradise I bought this album. It is, without doubt, the best and most complete album I’ve bought this year packed with really strong tunes. If you like this track get the album its 5 star.
"Best Album Cover?" I'll agree with that. The woman's still got vocals, attitude, and whatever else it is that makes me grin.

That's not too surprising. They're friends. IIRC, Don't Get Me Wrong was written with him in mind.
BK: HA! Well....with McEnroe's personality I guess it's not surprising he'd run with rockers. I didn't realized his association with stringed instruments extended to music. Heh! I can't help flashing on a visual of him playing the guitar like he played tennis, slinging and throwing his instrument in "stay out of his way" fashion all over the place. Errrr...so to speak.

According to the liner notes its Zacharias Blad.
And here's a datum......apparently John McEnroe (yes...THAT one, the former Tennis Pro) played electric guitar on (some of?) the tracks, too!? Who'da thunk THAT, eh?

it shows good taste naming the album Stockholm!
GO Chrissie!
She DOES. Her voice sounds slightly different (older), but....still awesome.
I'm glad she didn't warble...
Its not a bad track but nothin new.
Yeah,'cause I'd like to tell them to knock it off. Chrissie don't need no background shrieking -
Agree with earlier commenter that this lacks that raw edge that makes her so great - too much production.
But I will buy it, because she is my punk rock goddess.
We all love Chrissie, but this is beginning to remind me of when Blondie released Maria however many years ago it was, and I'm beginning to lose interest through overexposure. The rest of the album cannot come out soon enough, but in the mean time, how about a few more Pretenders classics? I know, I could get my own CDs out, but it's always such a treat when someone else chooses a track or two for you and it reaches you by surprise (and it's no surprise when it's the same track over and over again).
Tainted Love, for example, which came on after, is not a song I'd dig in my collection for these days (having heard it probably 15,000 times already), but as the last time I heard it must have been at least a year ago, part of me derived a modicum of joy at the recognition of the intro.
So roll on June 10th!

IDK. I Agree with you!
