Fuzzy white haze in the asphalt was a lake
And the sand it was a grayer shade of blue
Spirits held desire while my eyes they did admire
The evening that we only thought we knew

Further out to sea I heard the birds wings over me
the Vibrations in the air to my ears
The sun was rising slinking low the day was saddled up to go
The desert's lonely nightfall disappears

The raven who flies through the desert skies
Is wiser than you or me
The birds have a peace, the stillness a sleeve
And the Desert Raven he has poetry

Close your eyes and fly to let the diamonds make the night
Crystal blue will turn to ruby red
The plants become a maze under the heavens stary hazel
Pegasus he gallops overhead

The buffalo at night they follow close the river's edge while
saffron slowly grows inside the caves
The starry minds of hyacinth the moon below the sun's eclipse
The sandy canyon floats beyond the waves

The raven who flies through the desert skies
Is wiser than you or me
The birds have a peace, the stillness a sleeve
And the Desert Raven he has poetry

Working on a cover of this as we speak. The guitar riff is contagious and addictive in such a good way.
Vibes of Steve Miller Band, Steven Stills, and America. Wild trippy and alpha wave.
Somebody grew up listening to mom and dad’s record collection (and maybe smoking some of their stash 😉).

Wow!!!

And my first thought was Allman Brothers.
I kyped this album cover for my computer background at work - very mellow. Went from a 7 to an 8 just on lyrics alone.

It's a Mega Mashup!
Hmmmm....Bob Welch...with Fleetwood Mac
I thought it was from the 70's too. But ... he was born in the 70's, so there you go!
So evocative- I’ve never tired of this one.
How cool would that album cover be on my van?  After I get the carpets put in, that's next.
WHAT A COOL SONG! I absolutely adore the hip, psychedelic trippiness and righteous cosmic wisdom of Mr. Wilson! This vibe is perfect for this wild and crazy 4-20 here in Boulder... I spent the morning shoveling, de-icing, and whacking snow loose from burdened branches, and now, with great help from RP, I'm busy getting started on a garlic lemon chipotle Crock-Pot chicken, and elevating my spirit way on up to a proper altitude for tonight's Silversun Pickups show down at The Boulder Theater -- setting a New Standard Orbit!
Bill says desert ravens have "presence." And I, for one, believe him. But is saffron really grown in caves?
could swear its Crosby and Nash.Just perfect

A classic feel, indeed: It feels to me a little like Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.

What about the Allman Brothers (at times)?

"I" is correct. Remove the "you" and add the verb and it would clearly read "wiser than I am," not "wiser than me am." The raven would know.
Pretty Cool, and my 26 year old digs this music.

there's a similar hook in another song, the lyric goes "oooo la la la...." and then something about a rainbow...i can't think of the rest. it's driving me crazy.
That guitar line is incredibly musical and flowing. Great stuff
Check him out with Roger Waters on tour. Very young-Gilmour sounding voice.

i agree. it's got some kind of - pardon the generalization - "yacht-rock" vibe...in a good way. i thought the exact same thing. it's very familiar, though i've never heard it before.
Nice 60’s hippy vibe in this song✌️

I'm sitting here fondly remembering listening to this as a child. It was a rude surprise to learn that this song released when I was 41. Funny how the brain plays tricks like that.

How about The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) from Yes (Fragile, 1971 album).
My smartwatch just recorded very low levels of stress while listening to this track, Thank you RP!

I second the America reference
He's a very interesting artist, in my opinion, ploughing his own furrow.
The opening made me think of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds so surprised when it morphed into this brilliant track and just seemed out of place... or is it just me...

nope. Wiser than you (are) or I (am). seems grammar is becoming irrelevant but correct someone only when you are correct.

Yep. I keep hearing the Bob Welch version of Fleetwood Mac.

Correct would be "wiser than you or I" -- as in, "she is wiser than I am"; not, "wiser than me is"...

Thanks - tricky stuff sometimes.  I guess if "than" is a preposition, then "me" is correct as you point out.  However, if "than" is a conjunction, then "I" would be correct with the missing/implied word being "am".  "Wiser than you or I am".

Same here -- just upgraded my rating from 3 to 7 😊
The guitar riff is a gut punch of truth.  Inspiration comes from simple beauty.

Love it.
Beautifully crafted.

This is so nice.
Name those influences:
Melody: Jerry Garcia
Arrangement: Fairport Convention (?)
Vocal: John Martyn

It the Laurel Canyon influence.

Reading Jonathan Spencer Wilson's background it says his "Origin" is Laurel Canyon even though he was born in North Carolina. From the first few notes this song could easily have emanated from Laurel Canyon in the late '70s or early '80s. Lovely!

Hmmm....was this recorded in 2011 or 1971? Doesn't matter; I like it.

Reminds me of CSNY.... definitely a laid back late 60s/early 70s vibe!
Saw him with Roger Waters last year. Terrific singer and guitarist. NO WONDER Waters picked him...he sounds like early Gilmour.
 pheavey70 wrote:
The first poster was correct. It is I. Easiest way to know is complete the sentence without "you." "Wiser than I am" (not "wiser than me am"). Rock is full of these substitutions to get the rhyme.

It doesn't come as a surprise that he hails from Laurel Canyon. An historical hotbed of talent.

I was thinking it would fit nicely onto Pink Floyd's Meddle.
So nice.
And a bit of phrasing from Yes, The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) back in the 70's.
I was expecting it was someone from either Quicksilver Messenger, or version ONE: Fleetwood Mac ....   Good Though.   It must have made an impression, since I didn't notice I had already rated it, as 8.

I hear a lavish dollop of Moody Blues running through it. Justin Hayward-like vocals and the floaty whimsicality redolent of my groovy 70s  experience. Nice.

Object of the preposition, just like they taught (some of) us in grammar school. Oh, wait... they don't dare call it that any more, wouldn't be accurate. GRADE school.

Well FWIW, when I'm humming it a few hours after hearing, my humming sometimes morphs into Fleetwood Mac's Albatross, and sometimes into Neil Young's Down by the River.

Part of the reason people here are connecting it to so many different acts is because it has so many elements: strong verse melody, strong chorus melody, and that repeated guitar section, all with their own different moods.

Wilson should be very proud of the way he put this together!
another good find ! love love RP

I concur with all parallels above and below... and now I'm even hearing David Gilmour singing this with early Floyd

Thanks RP for introducing me to someone I may never have heard otherwise. Again.
You all are missing the Yes influence here. Along with the other 70s threads.
