i really thought that was a picture of chris pontius lol
I'm not sold. The The is great (though maybe it's just Matt at this point), and I can tell that they head good, earnest intentions, but the lyrics kill it for me. Aside from the line "something in the shadows communicates by code" which is GREAT, the lyrics feel extremely corny. The sound of this is eerie and offputting, but in a cartoonish way that only slightly works. The overly menacing tone combined with the matchy-matchy lyrics makes it all feel a bit forced.
As a 20 year old, I have to give it some grace though - being an adult in the 70's/80's must make modern times feel 10x more extreme, and maybe the cartoonishly intense sound here is more realistic for people that have known a simpler world. I hope it comforts the older crowd to know that people my age envy your experiences (the positive ones at least) and wish we could have those years now, minus all the prejudice and whatnot. Gen Z is very into things like physical media, conservation and low-tech, so hopefully we'll get some of the magic back :)

Lyrics
Servile, surveilled
Dumbed-down, curtailed
Screen-grabbed, down-ranked
Untagged, de-banked
Nothing to hide, nothing to fear
No one to censor, no one to smear
The revolution's been authorized
The future? Privatized
The consensus? Created
Reality? Curated
Every place you thought you belonged
Everything you thought you knew is wrong
Left is right, black is white
Inside out, hope is doubt
Back to front, the witches hunt
Truth stands on the gallows
Lies sit on the throne
Something in the shadows
Communicates by code
The unthinkable is now thinkable
The poison? It's drinkable
So, get with the program, get in sync
You'd better self-censor for wrong-think
Left is right, black is white
Inside out, hope is doubt
Below above, hate is love
Upside down, square is round
War is peace, west is east
Back to front, the witches hunt

Matt's as angry as ever, and rightly so. His social polemic is feckin spot on.
How come there are so many "1" reviews?!?!? Giving it a "1," seriously?!?!? It's no (TT) Uncertain Smile, but for a band nearly 50 years in, pretty darn good.
Great to hear a new track from his latest release on RP. A song filled with wisdom of today's times [need to get the lyrics added].
~ Dig! Such a groove! Hip lyrics, too! Thanks, RP!
