Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
You say I've been spending my money on other women
You've been taking money from someone else
I called your mama 'bout three or four nights ago
I called your mama 'bout three or four nights ago
Well your mother said "Son"
"Don't call my daughter no more"
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
You say I've been spending my money on other women
You've been taking money from someone else
Come back home baby, try my love one more time
Come back home baby, try my love one more time
If I don't go on and quit you
I'm gonna lose my mind
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself
You say I've been spending my money on other women
You've been taking money from someone else

Great. Clapton’s good old ballsy version before the bow tie and mineral water fluff of the unplugged session. Actually, that one wasn’t too bad either if you can ignore the irritating audience clap along.

This is BRILLIANT work! Long Live RP and your great art!!

I tend to agree - his later work seems clamped to metronomic 1-2-3-4 instead of the soul-felt bluesy flexibility.

I just heard 2 songs ago RL Burnside for the first time. Clapton is a good generic blues interpreter.

Lacks conviction IMHO. Seems like he’s mailing this one in. I’d pass on this any time.

Hope in vain. This type of commentary is TheWiseKing's stock in trade. Just laugh at it instead.

I could not disagree more. This album was a return to Blues form after a couple more commercial releases earlier in the 80's. With this album he came back clean, mean, sober, and focused. Both Bad Love and Pretending reached #1 on the charts. It was his first solo album to go double platinum.
The album features: Robert Cray, Darryl Jones, Phil Collins, Jim Keltner, George Harrison, David Sanborn, Chaka Kahn, and Darryl Hall among others.
Clapton considers this one of his best efforts.
I had this album at one time. It sounded like Clapton wasn't even trying anymore at that point in his career.

Amazing. When I was a lil kid and heard Cream I thought Clapton was some sort of badass. Now, I listen to his blues stuff and it reminds me of somebody's embarassing uncle who gets up and jams with the band during their bar mitzvah.
I hope you are kidding.
My rating 7 only
Next time I Skip

"Let's see now...let's take a standard blues formula, throw a few cliche'd lyrics together....in fact I can't even be bothered to do that. I'll just copy an old Bo Diddly song and stick it on my next album. Speaking of my next album, I'm feeling so lazy that I'm going to take the concept behind Phil Collins latest album cover (who himself has the same concept every time - an hilarious picture of his daft baby face) and mirror it with my face. My fans will lap this shit up. They'll even wanna see it on my next Greatest Hits album, which is due out soon, as I haven't had one for at least three years."
Meh
This song is like soup that has too many ingredients in it.

For a pasty-faced white guy, this is pretty good.

Boring, generic, plodding drivel.
ZZZZZZ
According to Clapton this was one of his best albums. I can agree, it is quite mature and you feel that he just enjoys playing. This song and the following acustic version is a good example. Man, this just makes me stand up and sing!!

Is he being too conservative?
It's hard to tell....
If you were a musician, wouldn't you strive to find a point in your career where you could stop "trying" to be anything? At some point wouldn't you rather simply be yourself?
A more nuanced existance might involve less jumping through fanatical hoops.
You also might consider what songs you might feel comfortable playing (if you were a musician) for your fans over your later years. If you write another challenging song, will you be comfortable playing it a thousand times?

Saw the tour for this album. Was definitely a low energy laid back effort. Not my favorite stuff that he has done, but better than OK.

Have to agree. There's something about this that's just not right... I didn't know this was a cover until reading the comments below, but it sure sounded like one from the get-go. Sounds a little bit soulless.

Adore Clapton, but if you're going to play "Before you accuse me" then the Creedence Clearwater Revival version is INFINITELY better. This is pedestrian in comparison.

Was sooooooo glad he included this when I saw him 2010... one of my all time favorite albums. Kudos to Setlist.fm for informing me of the entire playlist including the fact this is a Bo Diddley cover...
cool tune! The portrait by calypsus is excellent!
CCR's version is pretty good too.
Bill ought to sometimes play the original artist or recording against a cover back to back. Of this track there must be multiple versions.

I love this!
One of my favorite Slowhand tunes.

Nice catch, OTB, thanks for that.
