Nice atmosphere shot, Lynne. The only thing I know about NIN is Tori Amos' cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

My Brightest Diamond

Clare & the Reasons

I go to a lot of rock, pop, jazz, world, and classical concerts, but haven’t in a long time enjoyed one so much as last night’s My Brightest Diamond with Clare & the Reasons at the Cedar in Minneapolis. Old theaters such as the Cedar make the best concert venues and it was more than ample for the few dozen in attendance last night. Why so few? I think it was because Minneapolis was a late addition to the tour. I learned of it only recently through a My Brightest Diamond e-mail list, not from the usual concert announcements.

I should say at the beginning that these artists aren’t likely to appeal to the dinosaur rock or louder-is-better folks. In fact, the only consistent instrumentation throughout the evening was a viola and a cello. It was perfectly suited to the subtle, melodic, and whimsical music performed.

Clare Muldaur (daughter of Maria “Midnight at the Oasis” Muldaur) has a voice similar to her mother’s but perhaps an even lighter, sweeter version. She and her band played a selection of songs from their most recent album, The Movie. They ended with an unexpected but delightful cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears which, coincidentally, I’d heard on RP shortly before leaving for the concert. Notable among her band is Muldaur’s husband, Olivier Manchon, who plays guitar, bass, keys, violin, and recorder as well performing sleights-of-hand for the amusement of the audience.

Clare’s band was also the side players for My Brightest Diamond, which consists of Shara Worden and whoever is playing with her. My first recollection of Shara Worden is as the head cheerleader on a Sufjan Stevens tour. The second is seeing her playing keyboards (she played only guitars last night) in his performance on Austin City Limits. Her music is imbued with ethereal melodies, intense emotion, and literate imagery. The performance, assembled from songs from her Bring Me the Workhorse and A Thousand Shark’s Teeth albums, is leavened by badinage between Worden and Manchon.

The music was wonderful and performed with passion matched by splendid playing from the band. I smiled and laughed often. The whimsy of Shara Worden was most evident in the penultimate song which she performed with only her guitar for accompaniment while the band operated a romantic vignette of hand-held dolls that began with a color silhouette enactment of a sailing vessel carrying the lovers and continued with a variety of props. It was rendered with childlike sweetness and was utterly charming.

This concert tour is recommended for those with musical tastes beyond the pedestrian and for those who would benefit from some spirit-lifting. Here are the locations for the rest of the tour:

11/11 - St. Louis, MO - Cicero's
11/13 - Denver, CO - Larimer Lounge
11/14 - Paonia, CO - Paradise Theater
11/15 - Salt Lake City, UT - Urban Lounge

Yep I saw him in August... that's my pic. Some of it was very weird, he was bored and didn't play much, but his band was having a lot of fun. He didn't go into the new CD except for two songs... one was planned, the second one he called an audible and was very rough.

Even tho I know Beach Boys as well as the next guy, as they reeled off that string of classics I kept catching myself thinking, "oh yeah! this one's his too!" He even did Jan & Dean's Surf City. They peaked with Barbara Ann—maybe that's my favorite tho—and were a little too fast with Good Vibrations but still that was great to hear loud.

So what'd you think?

Dylan, last night from the 2nd row of the Santa Barbara Bowl.

I had heard the horror stories of how horrible he could be in concert, so I was a little concerned. About 10 years ago though, I saw Dylan, Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell together at UCLA, and they were all great, so I had high hopes.

He did not disappoint! It was the last night of the tour and he and the band were so on! It really was an amazing show. They played a solid 2 hours. He actually was smiling at times, and seemed to be really into it.

As per usual I guess, he didn't say a word until he introduced the band just before they left the stage before the encore. In fact, I don't think he even looked at the audience until they took their bow at the end of the encore. That was okay though. He's just not a banter guy. He was there to play music.

We were talking before the show to the two guys right in front of us in the 1st row. They had seen him perform down south the night before, and said the band was playing a different set evey night, which I thought was very cool.

The arrangements for just about every song were all very different then I have ever heard, but that was part of the fun, hearing how he wanted these classics interpreted.

The set list:

1. Cat's In The Well
2. The Times They Are A-Changin'
3. The Levee's Gonna Break
4. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
5. Million Miles
6. Desolation Row
7. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
8. Honest With Me
9. I Believe In You
10. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
11. When The Deal Goes Down
12. Highway 61 Revisited
13. Ain't Talkin'
14. Thunder On The Mountain

encore

15. Like A Rolling Stone
16. Blowin' In The Wind

An uptempo rockin' version of Hwy 61 Revisited may have been the highlight, until the encore took it to an even higher level. (I mean, just look at the choices for encore!)

It really was a stellar night of just some of the best songs ever written.
