When a phone OS reaches marketplace dominance why bother promoting it? You won! It's like promoting "All solid state!" or "radial tires"—once something is ubiquitous touting it just looks silly.

Brand marketing is expensive. It's no wonder Google isn't pushing Android—they don't need to.

I strongly recommend the Zagg screen shield for any phone.  They work, they are reasonably priced, lifetime guaranteed with full replacement and their exchange policy is great.
They are a one time thing.  Once they are unstuck, they are toast. When my phone went out for repair, mine was removed.  I went online and ordered the replacement.  At that point I had thirty days to return my old one.  The new screen was in my hand before my new phone was, no muss, no fuss.
Edit: I should have added, no charge.  They 100% guarantee for any reason.

Over pay for a phone and plan because Steve Jobs said so?  Not in this house.
The iPhone was on our research list and was dropped as an option fairly quickly.

I too am eyeing the droid family - an HTC EVO for purchase sometime in August if all goes as planned.  I think they're great phones.

Do some comparison with the Samsung Epic... we did a bit of research and the Epic had the Evo beat on a number of points.  There is a new Evo 3D, but I have not looked at that, so if that's what you're talking about, disregard.

Edit: I had both and Evo Shift and a Samsung Intercept as loaner phones, both are good for what they are... great by most standards, but if you're looking in the Evo/Epic neighborhood these won't even come close to what you're looking for.  I picked up a second Epic today at BB for the BDH today —— $50.  $130-something with case, Zagg shield with installation and first month of the protection plan plus tax.

After yesterday's conversations, I decided to run a little streaming experiment this morning...

I streamed RP on my phone for 4+ hours straight.  During that time I also took phone calls (about 45 minutes of total talk time), used the camera (about 10-15 shots), made one upload to FB and used the internet.  I also let whatever background apps came up run with minimal interference —- I only task killed twice.  Even while on the phone RP was still streaming in the background.  My battery was down to 40% at the end of four hours.

I was going to run the battery completely down but for some reason the RP widget decided to stop running and I didn't take the time to figure out why.  I'm typing this while BDH cuts planks for the floors, so its taking about 45 minutes to complete this thought.

Using that rate of battery use, I could stream plus use other functions non-stop on this phone for between 6 and 7 hours before I hit zero battery.

My phone is a Samsung Epic.

Mine did that originally and I had to play with it a bit... I have to re-download it on my new phone.  I'll let you know if I figure something out.

I doubt mine would make 7 hours of streaming (never timed it). I'm guessing I'd be close to Xerics 5.

If Android apps are properly written, they will kill themselves and not require an app killer to maintain battery. Unfortunately, the downside to the open nature of android is that you can have poorly coded apps. Android is a lot like the Unix/Linux world - you have every tool in the shed available, even the really dangerous ones. You can make art or chop your leg off. And the people with the skill to help you are just as likely to mock you from the fence while you bleed to death as they are to jump in with a tourniquet and stop the bleeding.

In hindsight... 7 is probably a little high... I wouldn't have been streaming during phone calls and most media use (its a concentration thing for me, not a phone thing) but either way, I can go most of a normal day doing quite a bit.  In that scenario I was alone in a back office streaming when ever I wasn't on the phone or what have you, so I would have to really run it to see what uninterrupted streaming would do.  I apologize, because now that I thought it out, I was probably overstating that.  I do remember I died right around the time I left the gym that night at about 7 pm, leaving the house at 7am and I use the phone as a timer and stopwatch in the gym.  Of course that did seem to vary as the battery got older.  I now have two batteries (a result of the phone replacement... when they think they are going to fix it they give you your battery and back to keep.  When mine got junked, I got to keep the old phone parts, plus got the new one.) so I'm now thinking of keeping a spare charged battery in the car for a pinch, but with my mobile charger it doesn't really seem necessary.  When I'm on the road streaming, I plug it in on principle... I also plug in my iPod whenever I'm using it in the car. I tend to plug in in the car whenever I think of it really just on principle but usually I forget.  My highest use is media, not streaming and that I can run a full day most days —- even my 16 hour days without a charge.  Yesterday is a good example.  I was out of the house from 7 am to 1 am and only rejuiced for about 15 minues while I was at lunch.  When I got home this morning I still had 65% battery.  Throughout the day I had been texting, emailing, making calls and using the internet all day long —- I use a lot of my phone functions at work for this contract.  I was also using it heavily as a flashlight during the luau I was running, then talked for about 90 minutes on the way home and after I got home.

Now if I play too much Angry Birds, my battery life is a goner.  That stupid game is a stupid waste of time and a huge battery suck.  But sometimes I enjoy the mindlessness of it when I have time to kill during the day.  I'm currently doing CS and when I'm not on the phone I just have to sit there unless they have a project for me, so AB has kept me amused on the slow days.
