OK - let's change that to 'non-classical songs' - he's a classical music listener and dismisses all else. I have no problem with 4/4 at all, but one of his reasons for not liking non-classical music is "it's all in 4/4" (and yes he & I both know it's a generalisation).

If you like let's widen the request to any music that is good to play to someone who only listens to classical music to convince them that there is decent non-classical music out there!

Ahhhhh...

He needs to hear (albums):
Time Further Out - Dave Brubeck
Soft Machiine - Third
National Health - Of Ques and Cures
Yes - Close To The Edge
Reniasance - Live at Carnegie Hall
Frank Zappa/ The Mothers:
  Burnt Weenie Sanwich
  Waka/Jawaka
  The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life

Technically it's 7/4, except for the bridge/guitar solo, which is in 4/4

Others:
Yes -  The Fish (7/8)
Soundgarden - Spoonman (7/8)
Jethro Tull - Living In The Past (5/4)
Grateful Dead - The Eleven (11/8)
Pat Metheny Group - The First Circle (22/8)

I perfectly know that you're trying to make me believe we're talking in "Tomato Gardens". Wikipedant defines Capt. Beefheart as follows : Experimental rock, blues-rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, protopunk, outsider. What's abnormal... oh wait.

Don't get me wrong. I love the guy. He's a through & through genius but I'd hardly call him easy listening.

Now that's a challenge! If you ignore all the issues surrounding lyrics and such, which don't really feature in classical music unless you include operetta, and are purely looking at the way the music is constructed. That would suggest prog-rock, or someone like Pink Floyd and such which are more than verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle 8-verse-chours-ad-infinitum. Personally I'd go for Floyd from Dark Side Of The Moon onwards, but I am severely biased, there are many alternatives!

Does your friend listen to jazz ? Or does he consider jazz as classical music ? I'm afraid this wittypedia link only will suggest that there are many more classical music titles than "pop songs". So maybe you could copy the list and delete all that could look regularly classical to your friend. {#Lol}

@nuggz : And stop being stubborn, young man. {#Whipit}

What ? The only classification I can think up for Beefheart is......abnormal.

Er....then I wouldn't suggest Captain Beefheart. {#Snooty}

But I would definitely recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra for someone who likes classical.

Any suggestions?

King Crimson was a good call, also try Bill Bruford, Frank Zappa, or Allan Holdsworth

edit: Re-read...."pop"...Ok....how about Jamiroquai?!
