we're watching Crackle TV,  but it is available on DVD at Netflix

American Pop
Here's the IMDB link

Ralph Bakshi's ambitious, animated time capsule charts a century of American music via four generations of one family.
Buzz and I remember watching this back in 1981 and enjoyed it a lot.

I've streaming for ages and found very few movies that I thought were satisfying.
But I've streamed all kinds of other cool stuff:

• A ton of MST3K
• Old 60s and 70s TV series
• A bunch of 50s and 60s classics - sci-fi and film noir
• Current TV like 30 Rock
• Hyperdrive - a British series I'd never grokked before
• You can't go wrong with Fawlty Towers
• The Pillars of the Earth
• A bunch of super heros cartoons
• Monty Python !!!
• A load of nat geo and science shows

but I did discover a few films that were decent:

• Kes
• Criminal
• The Caveman's Valentine
• Below
• A Film With Me In It
• Thieves Highway
• Ink
• Metropia
• The Machinist
• District 9
• Brothers
• Surogates
• The Crazies
• Moon
• The Fountain
• Befoer the Devil Knows You're Dead
• World's Greatest Dad
• MAry and Max
• Punch Drunk Love
• A Prophet
• Up
• The Eclipse
• Contact
• Surveillance
• Sky Captain and the...
• Stigmata
• Defiance
• Hearts in Atlantis
• Paycheck
• Snow Falling on Cedars
• The Naked City

Yeah, I guess there's not a lot in the way of standard movie fare.

edit - I found a bunch of good ones and added them.

Watched Hitchcocks Frenzy from Netflix last night. Was weird seeing the guy that plays "Richard" on "Keeping up Appearances " with hair and playing a more serious roll..

I posted info about a great BBC documentary that aired here on PBS in 1978; Netflix only has it on disc...why?

There are a few factors, as far as I can tell.
  1. If any of the producers doesn't want it available, they can stop it. We knew from the beginning that iTunes wouldn't have Beatles music because the Beatles have always wanted stricter control over their catalog. But that domino has fallen so similar holdouts in the movie industry are going to become more rare. It's the way of the world!
  2. The film may be under a blanket "all rights" contract to some other distributor such as Turner Classic Movies (I'm guessing—they may not have any contracts) that prevent anyone from offering a streaming version because the contract language is too restrictive. These contracts will eventually expire or be mutually abandoned (whatever the term is) once DVD sales and TV viewership etc. slow to nil.
  3. I assume Netflix has a set budget per month for converting films to whatever format they need and it's only logical that they pick and choose. There used to be a form you could fill out to request a DVD that wasn't in their catalog... I'll bet they monitor searches to see what people are striking out on, and go look for it.
The PBS series, "Irish in America" was never made available on DVD  as far as I can tell. Why? You can get The Amish PBS series and they can't even see it!

And the Amazon streaming is all PPV unless you're paying for Prime ($80), right?

(edit: Can you believe it took me half an hour to make that post? MZ covered it...) I guess I need to make coffee and pick up the pace around here!

I will repost a couple of my responses to this subject:

"What people need to realize it is not Netflix's decision on what to make available for streaming - they need an agreement with the producer/distributor for every piece of media they make available for streaming.  And of course if a distributor/studio/producer figures they can still make a decent amount of money off disc sales they are not going to offer it for streaming, they would be shooting themselves in the foot.  That's the reason you see very few if any "new releases" available for streaming and why a lot of very popular older material is not available for streaming.

If it were up to Netflix they would stream everything and get rid of the overhead involved with disc rental.

The thing to do is not get caught up on "what I want is not available".  Approach it from the angle that there are thousands of good things available for streaming and look for those.  I have spent hours upon hours watching streaming since I got the Roku (much more time than I should have)  In addition there is alot of non-Netfilx available via Roku.  For one the Roku News channel - I love that one.

I would love to be able to have everything I want availabel to stream but heh ya live with what ya got. And for $8/month (streaming only option) it is still a great deal.
"

Regarding the two "Christmas Carols" being old and not available - I would bet that during the holiday season they sell a fair amount of DVD's of those films - I know I bought one.

And regarding Amazon:

"If you are an Amazon Prime member ($79/year)  along with free 2 day shipping on just about anything you order you now can get a number of free TV shows and movies streamed via a Roku or other video streaming device.

I took a quick look at what they are offering for free - a lot is already on NF but I did find one gem I have been looking for.  The TV series "Farscape" is available via the Amazon streaming but it is not available via NF.

I have had a Prime membership for 2 years and as I do most of my shopping via Amazon just the free 2 day delivery has been worth it but now an added feature - cool.
"

And the hanging thing - if you are watching at times of the day when NF streaming is heavily used you may experience lags, also with very popular material,  there just isn't enough bandwidth to handle the demand.  I know if I want to watch something between 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM I will get lags alot of times.

So I just went thru and looked for a few more to add to our queueuew. Maybe you missed some of these:

Get Shorty
Big Lebowski
Hudsucker Proxy
Lost
Firefly
Lord of the Rings
The General (Buster Keaton)
Being John Malkovich
lots of Eddie Izzard concert films
Bob Roberts
Sweet Home Alabama
Blazing Saddles
Apollo 13 & The Right Stuff
Letters from Iwo Jima
Kite Runner (Until March 1... they do that sometimes)
Motorcycle Diaries
Girl/Dragon Tattoo
Gogol Bordello: Non-Stop
Moon
Blade Runner

I have found tons of stuff to stream, and haven't have many problems, though Vanity Fair was so dark I couldn't see anything! They have all three of the original Swedish "Girl" movies. And the original Let the Right One In.  Lots of early Hitchcock films too. I watched The Lady Vanishes recently. Also: Man on a Wire, Zombieland, Bottle Shock, Up, Brother from Another Planet ...

{#Yes} I posted my same disappointment over in the other Netflix thread.  I posted info about a great BBC documentary that aired here on PBS in 1978; Netflix only has it on disc...why?  I know as mzpro5 pointed out they have to pay extra to stream a movie, but what about a thirty year old documentary that was initially shown for free (and is still free on YouTube)?  I also wanted "Jeeves and Wooster", another BBC production (and shown for free on Masterpiece Theater)...disc only.  And what about the two versions of "A Christmas Carol" I wanted to watch at Christmas but weren't available? One is sixty years old, the other forty.  I can't believe there's the same demand (and fee) for those films as there is for something like "the Social Network."  I'm just gonna cross my fingers in the hopes that Amazon VOD (which appears to have everything — I've spent $35 this month) comes up with a monthly plan.

We watched it Wednesday night.

It was okay.  Not a bad way to spend the evening.  Prepare for a leisurely pace.  The hubby loved it 'cause he loves Robert Duval.  Me, not so much.

Dave, Frenzy might have been one of the first of Hitch's movies I ever saw (on tv actually). Really affected me.

I can't decide what I want to watch, so might watch nothing!
